Huron County Warden Bernie
MacLellan announced that Huron
County had been granted $850,000
under the Ontario Disaster Relief
Assistance Program (ODRAP) at
council’s March 7 meeting in
Goderich.
Shortly after the tornado hit
Goderich, Central Huron and
Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh in
August, Huron County was
informed that it had not been
granted disaster relief funding from
ODRAP. However, staff and
councillors were persistant in taking
the issue higher and at a recent
conference in Toronto councillors
were informed that the county had
been approved.
The approval came directly from
Minister of Municipal Affairs and
Housing Kathleen Wynne,
with whom the Huron County
delegation had an audience at the
conference.
MacLellan told council, however,
that woodlots would still not be
covered under the funding as some
councillors had hoped they might
be.
The Maitland River Elementary
School (MRES) in North Huron will
officially come into being on July 1,
2012. While it won’t yet be the
newly constructed school, the
transition process into Maitland
River is well into its late stages. At
the end of June 2012, Blyth, East
Wawanosh, Turnberry, Wingham
and Brussels Public Schools will be
closed and MRES will accept
schools from all of these schools.
While construction of the new
school will not be completed until
fall of 2013, Maitland River will
open its doors in September 2012 in
two campuses. The Full Day
Kindergarten program will begin
this fall at MRES. This means that
the Junior and Senior Kindergarten
students along with the Grade 1
students will attend the Turnberry
campus of the Maitland River for
the 2012-2013 school year while the
students in Grades 2 through 6 will
attend the Wingham campus, at the
former Wingham Public School.
Maitland River Principal designate
Alice McDowell made the
announcement at Wednesday’s
Transition Committee Meeting.
Students in Grades 7 and 8 will
begin attending F.E. Madill
Secondary School which becomes a
Grade 7-12 school similar to
Goderich, St. Marys, Stratford and
South Huron secondary schools.
In the case of Brussels Public
School, which also closes the end of
June, some students will attend
MRES and others will attend North
Woods Elementary School,
currently Grey Central Public
School.
It is expected that construction of
the new Maitland River Elementary
School will begin sometime this
spring.
