While he found a seconder for themotion in Deputy Reeve DavidRiach, there would be a lengthy discussion before council came to any sort of agreement. Councillor Bernie Bailey felt that while there was merit to the idea, it was too soon after a previous meeting the two councils had in which North Huron was questioned on issues they didn’t have the information to back up. “Given the temperament of the last conversation we had with them, I think we need to focus on concerns here before we go back,” he said. “They had questions, we need answers before we meet with themagain. That’s part of the economicdevelopment agreement that we put together, that we would have answers. “I also feel this might be a little too soon,” Bailey said. “[Morris- Turnberry Mayor] Paul Gowing was pretty clear he wanted some of this straightened out before moving forward. I wonder about the timing of this meeting. I want to be able to answer questions about council, whether it’s today’s or 1928 or 1958 or 1988.” Riach said that he asked Chief Administrative Officer Gary Long to put together a list of all theagreements that Morris-Turnberryand North Huron have. “I know their CAO is very well versed on the agreements we’ve had in the past, but it may be from a slanted point of view,” he said. “I think we need to go in armed with the right answers.” Long stated that he wasn’t prepared for such a meeting right away. “As a staff member, I’m not eager to meet with our counterparts there,” he said. “Putting statistics together as far as servicing options and recreation statistics is something we’re working on behind the scenes right now to have information to answer those questions, but I’m not anxious to have that meeting.” Reeve Neil Vincent felt that a lot of misconceptions were thrown around at previous meetings between the two groups. “I have done the research on exactly what past agreements were made,” he said. “It seemed, at meetings with Morris-Turnberry council, there was a lot of folklore that was different than I remembered.” Hallahan said that there was no timeline set on his motion, just that the meeting needs to happen. He did, however, state that it needs to happen sooner rather than later. “I don’t want to leave this for six months or for a year,” he said. Councillor James Campbell stated that he felt a timeline would be necessary or the meeting could be put off until it’s too late. “I agree with Hallahan’s motion but I think we need to put ourselves under a time line,” he said.“Otherwise we’ll find ourselves sixor eight months down the road and unable to have the meeting. We have to make sure we get this done.” Bailey reminded the group that North Huron had been called a ‘bully’ in a newspaper article after the previous meeting and said that, while the meeting did need to happen, he felt it would be better to put it off until they had the right information and could do everything properly. Long stated that staff were involved in information-gathering currently and that most of the answers to Morris-Turnberry questions should be available within a few weeks. Council unanimously agreed to support Hallahan’s motion and also stated they would attempt to get as much statistical information as possible to their counterparts in Morris-Turnberry to allow them time to study the research and save time at the meeting. The village of Auburn said goodbye to one of its most recognized figures on Feb. 25 with the passing of Gunnar Christensen. Anyone who lived in Auburn over the years will have had an encounter with Gunnar, however brief it may have been. In the summer he travelled on two wheels and made his rounds, stopping to speak to whomever may have been out and about. In the winter Gunnar and his wife Evelyn drove around the village to keep up with everyone. Gunnar was 77 when he passed. He and Evelyn would have enjoyed their 49th wedding anniversary on Feb. 23. Gunnar and his family have been an integral part of our village for many years. We are all very sad to say goodbye – his presence will be missed. The Auburn Knox United Church is busy organizing the annual roast beef supper for April 4. The supper will take place at 5:30 p.m. at the Auburn Community Centre. The cost for dinner is $35 for a family, $13 for adults, $5 for children 12 and under. Kindergarten and preschool children are free.
