(Photo submitted) Lightning win seriesover Aces, DevilettesThe Saugeen Maitland Midget AA Lightning won a pair of games late last month to finish off a couple of playoff series. The Stratford Aces managed a 1-1 tie against the Lightning to force a fourth game in their Provincial qualifying series. Laura Irwin was the only Saugeen player to beat the Aces’ goaltender even though Stratford was outshot 39-9. The Lightning edged the Aces 2-1 to win the qualifier series with three wins and a tie. On Feb. 25 the Lightning faced the London Devilettes in the second round of their Lower Lakes playoff series and Saugeen skated away with a tight 2-1 win to advance to the division finals, winning the series 2- 0. The previous Thursday, the Lightning beat the visiting London team 4-2 in their opening game. Goalscorers in last week’s games were Laura Irwin (4), Dollee Meigs (2), Kelly Gribbons, Georgia Ottewell and Hannah Davidson. Assists were awarded to Harley Westman (3), Hailey Herman (2), Brittany Hymers (2), Brittany Butcher (2), Meigs (2), Ottewell, Kailyn Soers and Kelly Garrow. Stephanie Sluys picked up two wins in net stopping 19 of 21 shots while Shea Tiley also picked up a pair of wins stopping 20 out of 23 shots. The Lightning have advanced to the provincial championship tournament to be held in Vaughan on April 13-15 and will face the winner of Kitchener and Sarnia in the division finals of the Lower Lakes Playoffs. Good for a laugh Blyth Brussels was in tough on Saturday afternoon against the Newcastle Stars in this Bantam Rep Ontario Minor Hockey Association playoffs series, but they eventually came out on top by a score of 5-4 in Blyth. The Blyth Brussels team now leads the series with two wins, one tie and one loss, the loss came on Sunday afternoon in Blyth. They can wrap up the series on Saturday in Newcastle when they play at 8 p.m. (Shawn Loughlin photo) The Blyth Brussels PeeWee Local League team hosted Wingham on Sunday, March 4 for a nail-biting 3- 2 win in overtime. The first period saw a goal from Wingham giving them a 1-0 lead they would hold on to until the third period. The third saw the Blyth Brussels squad come out to play, however, with Damon scoring from a nice pass from Cody to even the score 1- 1. Soon after, Mason scored off of a pass from Hudson and Joseph to take a brief lead. Wingham then evened the score 2- 2 forcing sudden-death overtime. The extra time didn’t last long, however, as, with just over two minutes passed, Dean put in a winning goal, assisted by Damon. Fending off Wingham were both PeeWee Local League goalies, Derrick and Jarron. The team is currently in the middle of a home-and-away series with Kincardine having faced off against the Kinucks last night in Kincardine and then playing them in Blyth on March 10. A final score was unavailable at press time. The Blyth Brussels Tyke 1 team headed to Lucknow on March 3 to play in the Ron Alton Tournament, a tournament which has been held for 44 consecutive years. Blyth Brussels took on Kincardine first at 10 a.m. and came out ahead with a 5-1 win despite Kincardine getting the first marker. The Tyke 1 team next took on Lucknow and the Blyth Brussels squad spoiled the day for the hometown kids with a big win moving them into the “A” championship. They were ready to face Goderich after a short delay and got a goal in the first period by Mitch Townsend assisted by Bailey Coles. The second period was back and forth and shots were had on both nets but the goaltenders held strong. The third period was very exciting with Blyth Brussels getting another chance to tie it up by Townsend scoring off a pass from Jeff Walden. In the dying seconds of the third period Goderich managed to poke one in past the Blyth Brussels goaltender to take the win. The team next takes to the ice on March 10 when they host the BCH Ice Dogs in Brussels. Novice LL falls short to Sailors Owning the ice The Brussels Skating Club presented its year-end awards last week at the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre. Winners were, back row, from left: Derrick Waechter, who achieved level six gold in power skating; Sarah Mitchell, who achieved level six gold in power skating; Sean Mitchell, who was named most improved senior power skater and who also achieved level six gold in power skating; Kiaran Jared, who achieved level six gold in power skating; Emily Mitchell, who was named most outstanding senior skater and Emma Strome, who achieved level six gold in power skating.
