Couples return from vacations to adventures, resorts
Catching up with folks with a few
health issues, we are pleased to hear
Linda Smith is now home from
hospital and progressing well in her
recovery. Isabel Wheeler suffered a
fall. She is home and coming along
nicely. She suffered a shoulder
injury and is taking physiotherapy to
help in her recovery. Mike Gulutzen
has had hip surgery and he is home
and doing well.
Welcome home to Chris andGabrielle Boettcher. They havereturned from a 10-day motor trip toManitoba and Saskatchewan. Theywent to Manitoba to visit with their
son Martin who is in school there.
He was on reading week and they
spent time visiting farms of friends
and acquaintances from the sheep
industry. They also travelled into
Saskatchewan for the same reason.
They had a wonderful time
exploring the countryside and seeing
the areas of their farming friends.
They returned home to find
everything well taken care of by
their two sons.
The Cranbrook Dart Club had a
group of 21 darters taking a “stab” at
the boards on Feb. 29. They had two
guests for the evening, with Danica
Zwep and Cody Janmaat joining
them. The two students were homefrom school for reading week. Thewomen are proving they are goodcompetition or are having a lot ofgood luck. Karen Bowles took the
high lady hitting 140 and John Gillis
also hit 140 for the men.
The world of e-mails is great and
we are pleased that news of Tanner
and Loni Leslie and their trip to New
Zealand can be shared. The couple
left in early February and went to
Melbourne. They say it is a lovely
and quaint city and the beautiful
Yarra River runs through it. They
have enjoyed walking along it and
taking in the scenery. When they
went to the pier, they saw cute mini
penguins. At the aquarium, they saw
more penguins, sharks and many
interesting and neat fish. They also
went to the Royal Botanical Gardens
that are lovely. They travelled on to
Sydney and report they were not
really impressed with the city. They
did meet some very nice folks from
Ireland at the hostel they stayed at.
They went on to Christchurch and
found the city to be very depressing.
Most of the city is shut down
because of the damage suffered from
two earthquakes. They have left
Christchurch in their rented car and
went to Oamaru. It is quite
interesting driving on the other side
of the road, but they report they are
getting use to it.
They took a side trip on their way
to Oamaru to the area where The
Lord of The Rings was filmed. They
report that the scenery is spectacular.
They headed to Queensland and the
landscape is unbelievable. They took
a boat trip of Milford Sound to see
the phenomenal sites of the area.
They then travelled to Rotorua
where there are natural thermal hot
springs and geysers. They smell
very, very bad – like very stinky
sulphur.
Their most exciting adventure has
been a black water rafting cave
adventure. They tubed down a 210-
foot dark drop wearing headlamps to
the underground caves. It was cold
and dark and they were in very small
enclosed spaces. On the ceiling were
glow worms that glowed blue whenthey shut off their head lamps. Thejourney continued and they had tojump off two waterfalls that theyreport was “super scary”. They went
to see a rugby game while in the area
and it was really exciting to see.
They were heading to Coromandel
and Auckland for a few days and
report that New Zealand has been
awesome.
The Walton/Winthrop birthday
ladies gathered at the Walton Inn to
celebrate the March birthdays. It
was a special birthday month for
Jeanette Robinson as she celebrates
her 50th birthday. Ladies wishing
Jeanette birthday greetings were
Brenda Bernard, Jennifer Vellinga,
Yolanda Gubelmann and Karen
Braecker.
Returning from a vacation in
Dominican Republic are Scott and
Jeanette Robinson. They spent a
wonderful week in a beautiful resort
at Punta Cana.
Happy anniversary to John and
Karen Braecker on celebrating their
25th wedding anniversary this week.
Services for Duff’s United Church
were held in the basement with the
congregation members being
greeted by Paul McCallum and
Colleen Bromley. The Lenten
Liturgy was read by Dianne
McCallum. The story for the young-
at-heart was the story of Abraham
and Sarah and how they were to be
blessed with the birth of a son.
Diane read the scripture reading and
the Psalm. Rev. Peter’s sermon was
entitled “Bearing our own Crosses”.
The March ushers are Fred
McClure, Stan McClure and John
Gillis and John and Fred accepted
the offering gifts. The Sacrament of
Holy Communion was celebrated.
John and Pat Gillis assisted Rev.
Peter with the sharing of the gifts in
the coming forward method.
Announcements included that for
the Lenten season, we are reminded
to think of others. Donations of non-
perishable food items for the food
bank would be gratefully accepted
and donations of loose change or
bills will be donated towards the
school in Sierra Leone, West Africa. The anniversary invitationcommittee is looking for addressesor e-mail addresses for present andformer members of Duff’s United
Church. Please contact Neil
McGavin or Phyllis Mitchell with
any addresses you may have. An e-
mail address would be perfect for
letting folks know easily and quickly
about the upcoming event. The
sooner the better for these addresses.
The committee is also looking for
photos about life at Duff’s United.
Suppers, Sunday school, fundraisers
anything. If you have any photos,
contact Monique Baan.
