On Saturday, Feb. 25 the
Wingham Golf and Curling Club
held the first Healthcare Rocks for
Docs Bonspiel.
Organizers Jan McKague-
Weishar and John Smuck with the
help from Lynn Hoy did a fantastic
job of putting this event together.
The 48 curlers, many first timers,
enjoyed a great day while joining
together to support a terrific cause
for our community.
The first draw winners were the
Hyndman team with skip Hugh
Todd, brother Wayne, Lee Rintoul
and John Smuck. In the second
draw, the Inglis family went home
winners led by skip Mac Inglis, with
sons Bod and Dave and Bob’s son
Wes.
In regular league play on Monday,
Feb. 20 the daytime skips picking
up wins were Les Shaw, Clayt
Ruppel, Bob Johnston, Hugh
Clugston, Lynn Hickey and Mac
Inglis. Monday night men saw
Stewart Leedham, Bruce
Robertson and Johnston take home
victories.
The Tuesday night ladies winning
teams were Leanne Elston, Carol
Horton and Jennifer Elston. Bill
deVos and Earl Fitch went home
with wins in the competitive league.
The Wednesday night mixed action
had Jill Eadie, Jennifer Elston and
Wayne Horton pick up wins.
The Thursday daytime saw Bob
Johnston pick up his third win of the
week. The others winners were Les
Shaw, Clayt Rupel, Roy Aitcheson,
Norm Fairles and Mac Inglis.
Belgrave skips curling their teams to
wins were Murray McNichol, John
Nixon and Larry Johnston. The
Friday night mixed league saw
Simon Logtenberg, Wayne
Waechter and Barry Simpson take
home victories.
Congratulations to the F.E. Madill
girls team skipped by Kelsie Eadie
with Kara Eadie, Stacey Hallahan
and Ashley Forster who finished
second in the Huron – Perth high
school play down. Good curling
girls.
This Saturday, March 3 the
club plays host to the Belgrave
Mixed Bonspiel.
OUT OF THE HACK NEWS
The Healthcare Rocks Bonspiel
held this past Saturday emphasizes
the importance of small town
curling rinks. It was terrific to see
the Wingham and surrounding area
get together in support of our
hospital. Thanks again to Jan, John
and all the organizers, sponsors and
participants.

Skips and Stones – By Bruce Skinn
Ruppel soon-to-be 92 years old and still curling
Curler keeps rocking
Clayton Ruppel, shown here, is just about to turn 92 and
can still be found curling twice a week with the Wingham
Daytime curlers. (Photo submitted)
By Bill JohnstonClayton Ruppel, just three monthsfrom his 92nd birthday, can be foundcurling twice a week with the
Wingham Daytime curlers.
Although most curlers switch to the
curling stick as they age, not Clayt.
He prefers the standard curling
delivery getting right down in the
hack and the long slide.
Clayt, win or lose, loves the game
and it shows with the smile on his
face. Just recently he went down to a
big loss but he bounced back the
next day and skipped his team
to a 12-4 win, much to the chagrin of
his experienced opponent, Mac
Inglis.
Clayton is not only a good curler
but enjoys golfing. Having just put
new grips on his golf clubs, he is
looking forward to the golf season.
Last season he recorded a nine-hole
score of 43, so don’t be surprisednow he is a year older he will recorda 18-hole score under his age. Hehits a long ball. During a recent
interclub with seniors from Tiverton,
he was out driving two of the
younger Tiverton seniors in his
foursome and amazed they kidded
him “what steroids are you on
Clayt?”
Clayton is never one to be idle. He
may be seen waxing his 40-foot
Winnebago on Minnie Street in
Wingham or driving it on the
highway heading to one of the
summer monthly meetings of the
Winnebago club in London,
Lindsay, Amherstburg or Blyth.
Never idle, Clayton and his wife
Dorothy are regular weekend
dancers at the senior dances at
Brussels, Clinton, Harriston and
Wingham. As soon as the band
strikes up a Fox Trot or Waltz, theywill be one of the first couples updancing. They love to dance andWilbee’s orchestra from the Walton
area is their favourite band.
Clayton Ruppel has led a busy
life. He served five years overseas in
the Canadian Army. A man of many
skills, he built many homes in the
Elora and Fergus area. For a time he
managed the pool room in Fergus.
Then hit the road driving a big truck
right across Canada to B.C. for
Hyndman Transport of Wroxeter.
When Clayton retired he built his
own home in Gorrie and later moved
with his wife Dorothy to an
apartment at 280 Minnie Street in
Wingham.
Clayton Ruppel is a great example
if you stay active you stay young. At
91 Clayton Ruppel sure enjoys a full
active life.
Curling provincially
Matthew Cottrill of Belgrave, third from the right, competed at the Ontario College Provincial
Curling Championships held in Sault Ste. Marie from February 16 to 19. The team finished
second, having the gold medal escape their grasp in the last shot their final match. The
second place finish qualifies the team for the Canadian National College Champtionship to
be held in Peterborough from March 21 to 25. (Photo submitted)
Novices oust Teeswater
On Saturday, Feb. 25 at the Blyth
and District Community Centre,
Teeswater visited to play the final
game of a three-game playoff series.
Blyth-Brussels team had strong
performance by all in the first
period, slowed down in the second
and held on in the third to beat the
Teeswater Otters 6-4.
Goals were scored by Joshua
Nixon (3), Jackson McDonald (2),
and Devin Johnston (1), with many
assists spread throughout the team
to make it a team win.
Club hosts open curling
The Brussels Curling Club hosted
an open afternoon of curling on
Family Day. The sheets were full
with nearly 40 people joining the
fun. There were experienced curlers
and new folks just trying the sport
for the first time. There were a
couple of families who came out to
enjoy Family Day. Club members
brought out other members of their
families to curl for the first time.
It was a very nice afternoon and a
lot of fun to learn about curling. The
club is hosting a bonspiel on March
17 and there will be three six-end
games played. Teams are welcome
to contact Steve Knight about details
at 519-887-6588.
