Sports
It’s all over for the Wingham
Ironmen.
The 2011-12 Western Junior C
Hockey League season came to
close on the Ironmen this past
Friday evening when they fell 3-2 to
the Walkerton Hawks, in a game
played at the Walkerton Arena. The
Ironmen extended the series on Feb.
22 when they rallied with five
unanswered goals in the third period
to claim a 7-5 victory. The Hawks
took the series, four games to one.
Adam Alexander opened the
scoring at 12:40 of the first period to
give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.
Walkerton took a 2-0 lead at 8:54 of
period two when Jordan Turcotte
scored.
Steve Hutchison got the Ironmen
on the board at 3:48 of the third
period, with help from Graham
Ashcroft and Tyler Kellum. Andy
Mitchell restored the two-goal
advantage for the Hawks at 13:11.
With netminder Jeff Puddephatt
pulled in favour of an extra attacker,
Travis Donaldson scored at 18:27 to
put the Ironmen down by one. Aaron
Armstrong assisted. Wingham was
unable to get the equalizer.
The Ironmen outshot the Hawks
39-31 and were 0-5 on the power
play.
Coach Chad Haggitt of Blyth said
the game was a tough loss for the
Ironmen. He said the players never
quit the last two games. “That is
good. The boys worked hard the
whole time, it’s tough to lose those
games, but somebody has to lose,”
he said.
Haggitt said he was personally
disappointed by the fourth place
finish in the regular season. He was
pleased with the way the team
played. “I’m happy with the way
the boys played and the way things
went, but I was expecting more, but
that happens,” he said.
He was hopeful of a higher place
finish than the fourth place they
ended up in.
“I thought we would have had a
better year,” he said.
Trailing 5-2 going into the third
period last Wednesday, the Ironmen
scored five goals to claim a 7-5
victory.
Nic Carter started the comeback
with a goal assisted by Justin Jacklin
and Kellum. Donaldson put the
Ironmen down by one with the
assists going to Armstrong and
Wade Stephenson. Armstrong
scored the tying goal and the go-
ahead marker with under a minute to
play. Stephenson and Joel Bowman
assisted on the first Armstrong
marker and Stephenson and
Donaldson assisted on the second.
Stephenson added the insurance
marker with 12 seconds to play.
The teams were tied at one after
20 minutes of play. Eric Lekun
scored for the Hawks and
Donaldson scored for the Ironmen
on the power play, assisted by
Armstrong.
Blair Goss gave the Ironmen a 2-1
advantage at 2:41 of the second
period. The Hawks scored four
straight goals, including three on the
power play to take a 5-2 lead.
Scoring for Walkerton were Andy
Mitchell, Andrew Graham, Lekun
and Turcotte.
The Hawks outshot the Ironmen
44-38 and the Ironmen were 1-6 on
the power play.
“You gotta believe, right,” coach
Haggitt said about the team’s third
period comeback. “Obviously, we
were thinking we could come back,
we didn’t know and once we got that
one goal we just kept going, we kept
chipping away and we were alright.”
According to Haggitt, the key to
the team’s success in the game was
that they never quit.
“We didn’t roll over and die and
we kept going,” he said. The
Ironmen enjoyed balanced scoring
again and he stressed that is going to
have to happen, especially if the top
line gets shut down.
Forward Wade Stephenson of
Brussels said getting the seventh
goal was a big one for him as he was
able to get his scoring touch back
that he had in the first series against
Kincardine.
“I’ve been fighting the puck lately,
it was nice to get one and hopefully
it keeps coming,” he said.
When Stephenson is on the ice,
the Hawks have to be aware of
where he is on the ice, unless they
want to get hit by one of his
punishing body checks.
It’s just my style of hockey,” he
said. “I’m a power forward and I
like to throw my body around. I’m
a big 245 pounds and I’m not afraid
to throw it in the corners. The more
I do the more I have them look over
their shoulders and the more it
works to our advantage.”

AA Lightning win one, tie one
The Saugeen Maitland Bantam
AA Lightning defeated the
Bluewater Hawks 3-1 in the second
round of Lower Lakes League
playoffs. The Bolts played a little
tentatively in the first period and
Bluewater took advantage by
scoring the first goal of the game.
However, in the second frame, the
Lightning lost some of their jitters
and carried the play. Ashlee
Lawrence scored the equalizer,
assisted by Cassidy Mason and Tori
Terpstra. Lawrence returned
the favour, assisting Mason on the
go-ahead goal in the third
period.
Miranda Lantz iced the game late
with an open net goal after Jamie
Simpson made a key shot block in
her own end.
On Sunday, the Lightning hosted
the Stratford Aces in Howick for the
opening game of the provincial
playdowns. Lawrence scored the
only Lightning goal of the game in
the first period with helpers from
Mason and Terpstra.
Stratford replied soon after with a
power play goal off a deflected point
shot.
The Bolts badly outshot the Aces,
keeping them pinned in their own
end for much of the game, but could
not bury the winner.
The final score was a 1-1
draw.
The Lightning will continue their
postseason with a couple of mid-
week provincial games against
Stratford and a pair of playoff games
scheduled with Bluewater next
weekend.

Bantam Reps up 1-0-1 in series
The Blyth Brussels Bantam Rep
boys had a great start to their
Ontario Minor Hockey Association
semi-final series. The squad
travelled to Newcastle for games
one and two last weekend.
After two games of total
domination by the Blyth Brussels
team earlier in the season
they managed a 3-3 tie in game
one on Saturday and a 8-4 win on
Sunday.
The boys did a great job living up
to the rough and tumble Bulldog
attitude, but also did an amazing job
of staying out of the box.
Scoring honours went to Trent
Michie (3), Arden Coultes (2) Josh
Van Soest (2), Conner Rodger,
Wyatt Ducharme, Jordan Hubbard
and Dustin Pennington.
Assists were netted by Quinton
Sjaarda (3), Hayden TenPas (2),
Luke McCutcheon (2), Reese
McArter, Coultes and Ducharme.
Matt McNichol provided great
goaltending all weekend.
Come out and cheer the boys on
this coming Saturday, March 3 at
2 p.m. in Blyth and on March 4 at
3 p.m., also in Blyth.
