Pancakes
Shrove Tuesday was last week and St. John’s Anglican Church in Brussels was a great place
to fill a pancake quota for the holiday. Volunteers like Kaylan Nesbitt, left, and Bev Palmer
made sure that everyone got their fair share of breakfast meat and pancakes. (Denny Scott photo)
Cadets, darts and meals had theBrussels Legion Branch busy thispast week. The Cadets meet onTuesday evening and are still
collecting returnable bottles for
their fundraising for extra supplies
and year-end trip. Donations of
bottles and cans can be left at the
Branch on Tuesday for evening
pickup.
The Homecoming Committee met
at the Branch on Wednesday
evening for their seventh meeting.
There were 13 present and plans are
coming along nicely for the
celebration in July.
The Thursday night darts had 11
darters taking aim at the boards.
Winners were: first, Roger
McHardy and Sandra Josling;
second, Ken Bird; high shot, Gord
Jacklin, 114 and Marlene Rutledge,
120. Darts are every Thursday at 8
p.m.
The Friday night supper of roast
beef was enjoyed by a crowd of
approximately 35 people. This week
will be sweet and sour chicken.
The Branch was the venue for the
funeral luncheon for Georgia Annie
(Cardiff) Reynolds for Saturday
afternoon. Our condolences to the
Reynolds and Cardiff families.Comrades Jo-Ann McDonald, JudyLee, Linda Bird and MaryBradshaw assisted with the
luncheon.
The Sunday night dance had a
new band entertaining the dancing
crowd. The Country Classics
provided a great variety of music for
the dancers. There was a good
crowd of 64.

NEWS
FROM BRUSSELS
Columnist visits curvy stretch during trip
We’re back in the land of the snow
and it feels good. It just didn’t seem
right to celebrate a Valentine’s
birthday in sunny hot weather. Mind
you it didn’t take too much adjusting
to settle in and read by the pool in
the warm sun.
Ralph and I took a driving tour
south with Port Charlotte, Florida as
the destination. Cousins Jim and
Amanda Watson live there and have
invited us several times, so the time
was right. With map, GPS and time
to spare, we headed south with the
trip tik from CAA as a guide. It said
23 hours and seven minutes. How do
they measure?
Of course we didn’t keep to their
route and it took us five days to
arrive but it was fun. Places like Salt
Lick Creek and Fancy Gap,
Blythwood and Jenkinsville, Coffee
Club Road and Horsefeathers Line,
Memory Line and Knuckle Road
just need to be appreciated. Short
stops in Savannah gave new
meaning to conserving architecture
with their history front and centre
and very important. The fish was
good too!
A wee trek through the Smokey
Mountains was fun and after we got
home Phil tells me we took the
Dragon Tail, a section of road that
boasts 318 curves in 11 miles. The
weather was beautiful with lots of
bikes out for a spin, this section
includes a tree that has vehicle parts
nailed to it. It is named the Tree of
Shame and holds the lost parts from
mishaps along this section of road.
The curves are so often that speed is
not really an issue, but the variety of
degrees in the turns make it a neat
ride, for most!
The alligators of the Everglades
are a tourist attraction, my they are
ugly. I liked the vegetation and the
birds better.
A stop for coffee with Bob and
Rene Richmond in St. Petersburg,
that moved into supper, was a nice
time as we headed back home. They
are waiting impatiently to get their
eyes and hands on a new great-
grandson that had just arrived, Levi.
