Former Auburn resident Lois Haines celebrated her 95th birthday and was happy to spend it with plenty of friends and family members. Jean reports that Lois is still the same happy and jolly person that she was in her days in Auburn. While in Fordwich, the group also visited Nancy’s brother William Anderson, who also lives in the area. NEWS FROM AUBURN By Koreen Moss 519-526-1060 kandkmoss@ sympatico.ca PEOPLE AROUND AUBURN Former Auburn resident celebrates 95 years Impaired snowmobile driver fined, on prohibitionBrandon Hull of Wingham pledguilty in Wingham court on Feb. 16to impaired operation of a snowmobile stemming from an incident on Dec. 30 in Wingham. Crown Attorney Laura Grant said Hull was operating a snowmobile on Victoria Street West with very littlesnow on the road when a nearbypolice officer activated the emergency lights on his cruiser in an attempt to stop the vehicle. The officer pursued the snowmobile and eventuallyapprehended the driver. Upontalking to the driver, the officer noticed a strong odour of alcohol coming from the driver’s helmet, Grant said, and also observed that the driver was slurring his speech and had red, bloodshot and glazedover eyes. The officer then administered a sobriety test to the driver which registered with 165 and 155 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. Duty Counsel Tim Mcdonald stated that Hull had no similar record and that he had just bought the snowmobile and admitted that what he did was “stupid” and “wrong”. Judge R.G.E. Hunter gave Hull a $1,000 fine and a 12-month driving prohibition. Hull has six months to pay the fine.PRELIMINARY HEARINGCorey Breen will face a trial in Goderich with a pretrial to be held on March 7 in Goderich and assignment court to be held on April 27 in Goderich. Breen is charged with theft over $5,000, two counts of thefts under $5,000 and one count of possession of stolen property. Hunter found enough evidence for the issue to go to trial after a preliminary hearing held in Wingham where four witnesses were examined. Building permits in Ashfield- Colborne-Wawanosh (ACW) may have continued on a downward spiral this year but the kinds of structures being built and the value of them show signs of recovery. Over-all, 160 permits were issued by the township in 2011 according to a report Kirk Livingston provided to ACW Council during its Jan. 24 meeting, a number that is down from 2010’s 164 permits and down further from 2009’s 170 permits issued. However, when looking at the numbers, it seems more big-ticket buildings are being created. New residential dwellings were up 35 per cent in ACW in 2011 over 2010’s numbers and three new seasonal dwellings were built up from zero in 2010. The majority of the new buildings were created in Colborne Ward, specifically in Meneset campground where 11 modular homes were erected as well as three houses and one cottage. Ashfield ward saw three cottages and two houses built while Wawanosh ward had the least amount of construction with three houses and one triplex being built. The total cost of building fees collected was up substantially as well. In 2011 $94,851 was collected through building costs while 2010 saw $65,645.53 collected. The value of construction also increased dramatically with $11,857,745 being reportedly spent on construction in the municipality in 2011, a significant increase from 2010’s $8,657,668 and 2009’s $7,981,668. The total area of new construction in 2011 was 25,911 metres squared. ACW permits down, value up By Denny Scott The Citizen By Madelaine Higgins The week of Monday, Feb. 13 to Friday, Feb. 17 at St. Anne’s Catholic Secondary School was a busy one. On Monday the Nordic ski team attended the WOSSAA meet in Duntroon where the 14 skiers on the senior teams succeeded in their divisions and will be travelling to OFSAA next week. Also on Monday, the junior and senior basketball teams played at Stratford Central Public School and the swim team had practice at Vanastra. On Feb. 14, Valentine’s Day, the student cabinet arranged themselves in the front foyer and encouraged students to write on their hands with markers, sharing something they loved. This activity ties in with the school’s theme for this year of Hands Up! On Wednesday, there was an applause breakfast recognizing the unsung heroes of the school and the curling team had a bonspiel at the Exeter Curling Club. The girls’ hockey team had a game in Clinton and the swim team had practice at Vanastra. Late in the afternoon, Grade 8 visitors from surrounding elementary schools had the chance to visit St. Anne’s. On Thursday, Feb. 16, students and staff had their first snow/ice day of the school year, and the movie night featuring Footloose was cancelled until further notice. Finally, on Friday, the midget girls volleyball team played at St. Mary’s District Collegiate and Vocational Institute and the entire school began looking forward to a three-day weekend with Family Day falling on Monday, Feb. 20. The student cabinet continues to prepare for the rescheduled Winter Fest event which will now be held on Feb. 29 in the afternoon at the school. Nordic team going to OFSAA
