Huron-Perth WMS holds annual
Bailey wants to see profit
Grass RFP
put out
As per research conducted into
last year’s budget, North Huron
Township Council approved a
recommendation to put out a
Request For Proposals (RFP) for
grass cutting in the Blyth Ward.
The cost of having North Huron
Township employees cut the grass
was found to be high by several
councillors and they want to
compare it to how a private
company could handle it.
The RFP would call for cutting of
Blyth Ward properties under the
Public Works, Recreation and
Facilities and Utilities Department
with the exception of roadside
cutting.
Since this is an RFP and not a
tender, staff members were
concerned they may not get the
numbers they need back, but
council felt it was a step in the right
direction.

The Huron Perth Presbyterial
Women’s Missionary Society held
its annual meeting in Monkton Knox
Presbyterian Church last week.
The theme of the meeting was
“Building Christian Community.”
Mitchell WMS was in charge of
registration and reported 60
members attended.
President Lois Horne welcomed
everyone and gave an opening
prayer. Psalm 95 was read
responsively, followed by singing,
“Praise Him, Praise Him.”
“Women with a Purpose” was
repeated in unison. Everyone was
welcomed to Monkton Knox Church
by Rev. Sara Thompson and Eldeen
Ward, Knox WMS.
The president of each group
answered the roll with the number of
women from their group attending.
The secretary from each group read
their annual report.
In memoriam service was
conducted by Betty Elliot and Nancy
Schneider from the Wallace
branch.
A plaque of recognition for many
dedicated years as a group was
presented to the Atwood Northern
Auxiliary on their disbanding, by the
Past-President Bernice Richards.
President Lois Horne presented each
member with a beautiful rose.
A special presentation was made
to Rev. Jan MacInnes for becoming
an ordained minister. She has a
congregation at Holstein
Presbyterian Church. Knox North
Easthope members presented a
comedy skit regarding belonging to
the WMS. Ruth Hart presented a
short review of the selection of
reading material available on the
book table.
The nominating committee report
was read by Helen Dunsith and the
new 2012 officers were installed by
Rev. Sara Thompson.
Grace was recited in unison and a
lovely hot lunch was served by the
Monkton church ladies.
The afternoon program began
with a sing-along with Lois Horne
with Shirley Aitcheson at the
piano.
Lois Horne introduced the guest
speaker, Rev. Andrew Fullerton who
shared his experiences as a visiting
team member of Boarding House
Ministry in Toronto. Bernice
Richards expressed the group’s
appreciation to Rev. Fullerton and
presented him with a gift.
Offering was collected by the
Goderich WMS Group.
Lois Horne announced the
spring executive is to be held
April 2, 2012 at 1:30 p.m. in
Mitchell. The Synodical will be
in St. James Presbyterian
Church, London on April 17 and
18.
Everyone sang the hymn, “God
Forgave My Sing” and Mary
Duffin closed the meeting with a
prayer.
Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh
(ACW) Township is losing a second
place of worship in as many years.
ACW Council learned during its
Feb. 7 meeting that Benmiller
United Church would be shutting its
doors at the end of June.
Ron Baer, representing the church,
stated that they planned to demolish
the building and have the lot clean
and prepared for sale by the end of
September.
Baer had approached council
about waiving the demolition and
tipping fees for the church, a
practice which ACW employed last
year when a church in Nile closed its
doors and was to be demolished.
Council approved the motion but
not before Baer could inform them
that the members of the church had
every intention of minimizing the
amount of waste that was created
through the demolition.
“We intend to reduce the waste
created to a minimum,” he said. “We
will sell or give away everything that
we can. We’re not sure about the
brickwork but if it can be reused, it
will.”

Councillor Bernie Bailey wants to
know why North Huron is
operating concession stands in
Wingham and Blyth at little-to-no
profit.
“I want to move that we close the
concession stands in Wingham and
Blyth [Community Centres], reduce
the hours that work there and
look for volunteer groups to run,”
he said at council’s Feb. 6
meeting.
Director of Facilities and
Recreation Pat Newson stated that
there is a policy in effect that closes
the concession stand during times
that prove to be consistently low-
volume.
“The booth has to be grossing a
certain amount of money at any
given time or else it’s closed during
that ice time,” she said.
Bailey said that, while the
policy is good, it doesn’t help the
fact that the stand seems to be
losing, according to his
interpretation of the budget,
between $5,000 and $8,000 per year
and costing $21,000 in wages to
run.
Newson said she would bring the
exact budget numbers to a later
council meeting to determine the
cost of running the booths
versus what they bring in. Newson
said that the booths sometimes don’t
break even and sometimes
bring in money depending on
the time of the week they’re
open.
Councillor Brock Vodden felt that
the issue being dealt with was being
viewed too narrowly and
independently.
“We have to be careful when
looking at something that seems to
be losing money,” he said.
“Sometimes those kinds of venture
bring in something else in another
place. Some companies close down
things that seem to be losing money
only to find out that it was
benefitting the company in some
other way.”
