Sports Ironmen lose three straight against Walkerton Hawks The Wingham Ironmen are in a must-win situation if they are to prolong their Western Junior C Hockey League season. The Ironmen trail the Walkerton Hawks 3-0 in the best-four-of-seven semi-final series. Game four was played last night (Wednesday) at the North Huron Wescast Community Complex. Gave five, if necessary, will be played in Walkerton on Friday, game six, if necessary, will go Saturday evening in Wingham and a seventh game, if needed, will be played in Walkerton on Tuesday. Game three was played last Saturday in Walkerton, with the Hawks posting a 5-1 victory. Game two was played Friday evening in Wingham with Walkerton scoring a 4-3 win in double overtime. The opening game of the series was played Feb. 15 in Walkerton with the Hawks needing overtime to claim a 5-4 victory. Walkerton took a 3-0 lead in the first period of game three on Saturday on goals by Matt, Shane MacDonald and Eric Lekun. Steve Hutchison got the Ironmen on the scoreboard at 6:20 of period two on the power play. Aaron Armstrong assisted. Lekun added two more goals a 7:41 of the second period and at 8:47 of the third period. Walkerton outshot the Ironmen 34-33 and Wingham was 1-12 on the power play. In game two, played Friday evening at the North Huron Wescast Community Complex, the Hawks opened the scoring at 11:54 of the first period as Ryan Stroz found the range behind Wingham netminder Jeff Puddephatt. Wade Stephenson tied the game at one at 5:18 of the second period with Joel Bowman getting the assist. Hutchison put the Ironmen in front at 18:39 of period two, with Armstrong assisting on the power play marker. MacDonald knotted the score at two at 6:41 of the third period and Hill put the Hawks in the lead at 6:59. Just 18 seconds later, Tyler Kellum scored for the Ironmen to tie the game at three. Armstrong and Darren Kerr assisted. There was no scoring in the first overtime period. With 1:09 left in the second overtime, Andy Mitchell netted the winning goal to give the victory to Walkerton. The Ironmen outshot the Hawks 58-49 and were 1-6 on the power play. Coach Chad Haggitt of Blyth said it was a tough loss. “The boys played awesome,” he said. The coach felt the two teams were evenly matched in the first two games. “We thought we played really well the first two games,” he said. “We came out on the wrong end of both in overtime. We’ll keep working hard and hopefully we’ll win tomorrow [Saturday] night.” He said the power play has to get better and hopefully it’ll get going Saturday night and the Ironmen can turn things around and get back into the series. In game one of the series, played Feb. 15 in Walkerton, Lekun opened the scoring with a shorthanded goal at 5:20 of period one. Mitchell scored on the power play at 7:51 to put the Hawks in front by two. Stephenson scored at the nine- minute mark with Armstrong getting the assist. Bret Brophy tied the game at 18:41 with help from Nic Carter. Walkerton took a 4-2 lead in the second period on goals by Hill and Adam Alexander. Justin Jacklin put the Ironmen down by one at the 59-second mark and Evan Ducharme tied the game at four at 3:08 with Jacklin and Carter assisting. Haden Campbell netted the winner at 2:53 of the first overtime period. Walkerton outshot the Ironmen 29-26 and Wingham 0-8 on the power play. (Photo submitted) Lightning take two The Saugeen Maitland Midget AA Lightning are up two games to none on the Stratford Aces in their best- of-five provincial qualifying series after picking up 3-0 and 3-1 wins. Port Elgin’s Kelly Gribbons was in on five-out-of-six Saugeen goals with a hat trick and two assists. The other goal scorers were Kailyn Soers, Dollee Meigs and Kelly Garrow. Assists were awarded to Sara Gossell (3), Soers (2), Stacie Vink (2), Garrow, Lindsay Dales and Brittany Hymers. The Lightning played game three against Stratford on Tuesday night in Teeswater and will also begin the second round of their Lower Lakes playoff series against the London Devillettes on Thursday. Ironmen facing elimination The Wingham Ironmen faced a do-or-die situation last night as they took on the Walkerton Hawks in game four of a best-of-seven series. They entered the game down 3-0 in the series. A final score wasn’t available at press time. (Jim Brown photo) Bantams advance to 2nd round The Saugeen Maitland Bantam AA Lightning advanced to the second round of the Lower Lakes league playoffs with a 1-0 win over the Cambridge Roadrunners. Jessica Dales scored the only goal of the game off a set-up from Miranda Lantz and Lexi Smith. Morgan Baker closed the door on all Cambridge shots to earn the shutout. The Bolts will continue their playoff run next weekend against the Bluewater Hawks.
