The renovations, part of a multi- phase project designed to bring the building in line with soon-to-be- mandatory accessibility guidelines slated to arrive in 2025. The renovations included loweringthe ceiling in the top level of thebuilding, moving the steps inside forsafety purposes and preparing tomake the building more accessiblefor the differently-abled. “We also ended up with a small stage that we didn’t plan for,” Legion President Andy Lubbers said with a laugh. The “stage”, a small raised portion in the upper hall, was created when bulkheads above the staircase to the bottom floor had to be built abovethe existing floor above it. The cost for the renovation wasapproximately $95,000 of which theLegion and Legion Ladies Auxiliaryprovided $50,000. The remaining $45,000 was paid for through an Ontario Trillium Grant. As of press time the costs of the renovation have been completely paid for. With approximately $16,000 remaining in their build fund and more to come when taxes arerefunded to the non-profit group,Lubber said that the second phase ofthe project could happen soonerrather than later. He explained that the building would be widened by moving the eastern wall approximately two and a half metres out. “We’ll see how far we can get with what we have and look into any grants we can get,” he said adding that he hopes the project will be underway within a year. The architectural drawings for the plan have already been completed but quotes or estimates have yet to be sought or received. Construction began in November and, while the Legion was open for all but two weeks during the construction, the first official public event in the renovated building was a card party held on Feb. 6. The next event will be a Valentine’s Bingo held this evening, Feb. 16 and run by the Legion and Legion Ladies Auxiliary. The doors open at 6 p.m. with Bingo beginning at 7 p.m. Continued from page 3 place. In Jesus’ time the lepers were banished to the lonely places so they were not in contact with anyone. It was the custom in those days that if you came in contact with a leper that you became unclean and would have to spend time away from people and then go to the priest who would declare you clean again. Jesus went to these lonely places and found people who needed Him. Jesus healed the lepers and told them to go to the priest but instead they went and told the people that Jesus had healed them. Jesus chooses to be with us in our lonely places and helps us deal with our fears. Jesus shows us love and He listens to us. We should listen to others who are having troubles. Jesus teaches us to choose mercy rather than judgment. It takes courage to try and change society. Love is to listen to others and extend ones self. Until we understand what it is like to walk in someone else’s shoes we have to listen and love by doing. The next hymn was “Lord Speak to Me” followed by the receiving of the offering, the offertory hymn, the offertory prayer and the singing of The Lord’s Prayer. The last hymn was, “The King of Love” followed by the blessing, the commissioning and the benediction. Everyone was invited downstairs for lunch served by the stewards and a time of fellowship was enjoyed.
