Second consecutive coach of the year from Blyth For the second consecutive year, the coach of the year award for the Western Junior C Hockey League has gone to someone from Blyth. The most recent recipient is Chris Stewart, coach of the Mitchell Hawks. The winner for the 2010-11 season was Chad Haggitt of the Wingham Ironmen. Stewart has been involved with the Mitchell Hawks for the past two seasons, taking over as head coach for the 2011-12 season. “It is an honour, I do take it as an honour, but at the same time it is definitely more of a team award, than an individual award,” said Stewart. He said the team has been really good the past couple of season. “We’ve had a lot of progression. We’ve done some winning and we’re definitely creating some identity that we can succeed in the future, hopefully,” he said. According to Stewart, the Hawks have two assistant coaches, Korey Dietz and Matt Roberts and they definitely are a big part of the team right now. Dietz has been with the team for at least five years while Roberts is a rookie. “They have lots of roles that they individually do,” he said. Being a very fast team is the key to the Hawks success. “We’re a very fast team and skilled team and we’ve built from our goaltender out andhe’s very good,” said Stewart.Netminder Drew Reinhardt wasnamed the rookie of the year.Although he has never coached in Blyth, Stewart has coached in the Huron Perth Lakers system. “A few years back I helped a team for a part season, but that’s about it,” he said. “I coached a number of years in the Huron Perth Lakers organization,” he said. “And, this is probably my 10th year coaching.” He indicated he is no longer coaching the Huron Perth organization and the Mitchell Hawks are the only team he is involved with. He has no coaching goals, as he is only looking ahead to the next two or three months. He is predicting that the Mitchell Hawks are going to do well in the playoffs.“I do want to win this league,” saidStewart. “Winning the league, forMitchell, it’s a team that’s new to theleague, this is only its fourth year in the Junior C League, and I think it would be a good honour for the Mitchell Hawks to win the league. The Mitchell Hawks are playing the Hanover Barons in a league semi-final series. He said Hanover is going to be a very tough series. “We’re very close, both teams are very skilled and fast,” he said. “I hope that we can succeed, maybe build from our goalie out, I think our goalie gives us the advantage.” During the off-season, Stewart plays for the Blyth Barons of the Huron County Fastball League, however he mostly spends his time relaxing and getting ready for the next hockey season.
