The Local League squad had been downed by Goderich
in three of their four last meetings but they held on to a 1-

Silver Stick tournament in Aurora
this past weekend.
The Bolts had come back from
being down 2-0 early to the Stoney
Creek Sabres to tie the game late in
the third period and send it to the
extra period. Neve VanPelt started
the comeback late in the second
frame, buying a rebound off a shot
from Avery Reeves. Ashlee
Lawrence tied the game with about
three minutes to play with Maddie
Duncan and Hannah Herman
assisting. The Lightning had
chances to score the winner and
prevent overtime, but were foiled by
the Sabres’ goaltender. StoneyCreek scored early in the overtimeperiod for the 3-2 win to send the Lightning homedisappointed.
The Lightning qualified for the
quarter-finals with wins over the
three other teams in their pool:
defeating the Ottawa Senators 4-0,
the Willowdale Red Wings 6-0 and
the Vaughn Flames 2-1. Jessica

PeeWee squad downed by Lambton
The Blyth Brussels PeeWee AE
Squad battled hard with some close
games against Lambton Shores but
came up short in the series in the
end.
With an opening game loss to the
Lambton Shores Predators behind
them, the Blyth Brussels PeeWee
AE's travelled to Thedford for game
two. The first period would remain
scoreless and the home team
Predators would score twice in the
second and take the lead into the
third. Halfway through the final
period Avery McArter banged home
the loose puck to bring Blyth
Brussels within one, assists going to
line-mates Craig Raynard and Nolan
Johnston. With 3:30 left in the game,
McArter notched his second on a
beautiful setup by Raynard and
Johnston to tie the game.
With both goalies denying all
opportunities, the remainder of
regulation and overtime would solve
nothing and the series would be then
decided by points.
With the AE squad losing the flip,
game three was back in Thedford.
The Predators would jump out to an
early two goal lead and it would stay
that way with Jeremy Wilts standing
on his head in net for Blyth Brussels
until four minutes into the third
when McArter scored assisted by
Johnston to pull within one.
Lambton Shores would add one
more and shut the AE team down for
a 3-1 final score.
Quickly putting the loss behind
them the majority of the team,
coaches and parents made the short
trip in the nasty weather over to
Forest to cheer the Bantam Reps
onto victory at the International
Silver Stick. Some of the Bantams
were quoted as saying “it was like
having home ice advantage
with the crowd there” and
sure appreciated the AE squad’s
support.
Game four was back in Brussels
with the boys’ backs against the
wall, they had to win to stay alive. It
would be a goaltenders’ duel with
Wilts and his opponent making all
the right moves. The Predators
would manage to sneak one past the
home goaltender and hold onto the
1-0 lead to take the series despite the
onslaught they received in the
third from the hungry PeeWee AE
team.
The squad continued to play in the
Western Ontario Athletic
Association Group Round Robin for
the Neilson Trophy. The boys took
to the ice in Blyth to play the
Milverton Drives on Jan. 25 and
skated away with a 7-4 victory in a
penalty-filled affair. Goal scorers
were Raynard (2), McArter (2),
Dylan McNeil, Ben Newell, and
Damon Allen. Assists went to
Carson Richmond, Raynard,
McArter, and McNeil.
Game two of the round robin took
place in Brussels on Friday, Feb. 10
against the Drayton Defender
Peewee Rep squad. A fast pace
against a good passing team saw the
AE team come up short 4-2 in the
end. Goal scorers were Raynard
assisted by McArter and Johnston
assisted Josh Gibbons.
Game three took place Saturday
evening in Listowel against the
Cyclones. Carson Richmond opened
the scoring in the first assisted by
Allen. Captain Ben Newell would
notch the team’s second goal on a
rush down the ice unassisted to set
up a 2-0 lead going into the third
period. McArter would steal the
puck and go in alone to put the AE
team up 3-0. Jeremy Wilts would
record the well deserved shut out as
he held off the Listowel advances in
the remainder of the game. Special
mention goes to Brett (Harv)
Stevenson making his debut at
forward.
Blyth fields three teams at broomball tournament
Sixteen PeeWee teams played at
the 2012 Broomball Junior
Provincial Championships in Barrie
last weekend.
The Blyth Silver Bullets’ were one
of three Blyth teams to participate.
The Silver Bullets first game was
against the Lightning from the
Ottawa area. It was a good start to
the tournament with the Silver
Bullets having a bit of an edge.
It was three minutes into the
second half before Luke Forbes
scored to put the Silver Bullets in
the lead. That was good enough
for the win with brother Ryan
Forbes stopping all shots on the
Blyth net.
The second game was against
Palmerston II. The Silver Bullets got
on the scoreboard early when
Cordell Kennedy set up Dylan
Datema for his first goal. In the
second half Blyth pulled away with
Datema scoring two more goals for a
hattrick and Luke Forbes added one
more to his total. Blyth won the
game 4-0. Ryan Forbes scored a
shutout in net.
In the third game Blyth came up
against their league rivals Mildmay
Red. It was a hard-fought game from
the start. The Silver Bullets were
pressuring Mildmay late in the first
half when Bailey VanMassenhoven
put a shot off the crossbar. The next
shift Luke Forbes scored to put
the Silver Bullets ahead. The Blyth
defence stood up well against
Mildmay with Rebecca Frawley,
Lauren Hayter and Robin
VanMassenhoven all doing a good
job. Ryan Forbes was solid in
net making some great saves to score
his third shutout of the tourna-
ment.
The Silver Bullets’ next game was
against the Rebels, another Ottawa
team. Blyth stayed even with Ryan
Forbes having another great game in
net. The Rebels outshot Blyth and
scored to go ahead in the second
half. Blyth fought back but couldn’t
get through to the net. Things went
bad for Blyth late in the game as the
Rebels scored twice more to seal
their victory. This put the Silver
Bullet out of the tournament but not
empty-handed. The Silver Bullets
finished with a bronze medal.
On Feb. 11 and 12 the Wingham
Golf and Curling Club hosted its
annual Sweetheart Bonspiel.
In the first draw the team of Doug
and Amy Miller with Dale and
Debbie Gammie came out on top.
The second draw saw skip Russ
Taylor along with his wife Janice
and Calvin and Karen Ruttan go
home with the win. The Miller rink
were the overall winners and
captured the CKNX trophy.
Superintendent Bruce Pewtress had
the ice in great shape and Cheryl,
Candace and Elizabeth did a stellar
job in the kitchen and at the bar.
In regular league action on
Monday, Feb. 6 Stewart Leedham,
John Mann and Bruce Robertson
teams were victorious. The Tuesday
ladies winners were all team Elston
with Jennifer, Leanne and Emily
skipping their teams to wins. The
competitive league winners were
Niel Edgar and Earl Fitch. The
Wednesday night mixed league saw
Jill Eadie, Robert Middleton and
Robert Grein teams pick up victories.
Friday night Murray Fear and
Simon Logtenberg were the winning
skips. All the other leagues were
between draws and information was
not available at time of reporting.
On Saturday, Feb. 25 the club will
be hosting the Wingham and District
Hospital Recruitment Bonspiel.
Skips and Stones – By Bruce Skinn
Saturday, Feb. 11 saw the Blyth
Brussels Atom Local League team
travel to Goderich for the second
game of the playoffs. Unfortuantely,
the team couldn’t carry the
momentum from their earlier victory
and lost 6-1.
The lone goal was scored by Josh
Plunkett assisted by Johnathon
Vincent.
On Wednesday, Feb. 8 the Blyth
Brussels Atom Local League team
hosted Goderich in their first game
of playoffs.
The team came out strong in the
first period and Ben Jacklin shoved
one past the pads, assisted by Adam
Shortreed. The Blyth Brussels team
played strong the whole game and
were not done scoring as Jason Wilts
and Ben Jacklin both scored
unassisted.
Goderich managed to tie it up
sending the game to overtime.
Although Blyth/Brussels couldn't
record a win, they played a great
game. Joe Jacklin made some great
saves in net.
The team’s playoff drive continued
on Wednesday, Feb. 15. A final score
was unavailable at press time.
