Automated waste in certain areas voted on by HEHuron East Council voted to bringin the Bluewater Recycling
Association (BRA) to provide
automated waste collection for parts
of Kippen, Brucefield and Vanastra.
At the Feb. 7 meeting, councillors
were told that the service would beable to start almost immediately andat no change in cost going from themanual collection to the automatedcollection (wheelie bins).
Clerk-Administrator Brad Knight
said that council should perhaps
keep the BRA in mind for the
Village of Brussels in the future.
Knight said looking at bringing inthe BRA would be an opportunity toenhance the program and it could bewhat waste collection in Brusselsevolves into anyway.
As far as the three rural wards of
Huron East go, Knight said it seems
that automated service is not as
widespread.
“It doesn’t look like automatedservice will work too well in therural areas,” he said.To roll out service in Vanastra,Knight said Huron East would have
to follow the model being used in
Central Huron where an annual rate
would be set and it could be added to
the tax bill by those who want to
take part, making the service user-
pay.
Knight said automated collection
could also be rolled out by May in
Egmondville and the Bridges area of
Seaforth.
Councillor David Blaney,
however, felt that moving to an
automated collection system where
people simply dump all of their
garbage into one bin and their
recycling into another may take the
emphasis off of recycling, whereas
now with the clear garbage bags,
people are being encouraged to
recycle.
“I would not be very happy with a
system that eliminates the incentive
to recycle,” Blaney said.
The motion to roll out automated
collection in Egmondville, the
Bridges, Harpurhey and Vanastra as
soon as possible was then passed by
council.

By Jo-Ann McDonald
The Brussels Legion Branch was
the venue for the Huron County
Dairy Producers annual meeting.
They met Wednesday and held a
meeting in the morning and
afternoon. Over 60 people enjoyed a
roast beef dinner at noon and a short
break. Helpers for the Branch were
Jo-Ann McDonald, Linda Bird,
Mary Bradshaw, Sharon Robbins,
John Lowe, Deb Caan and Judy Lee.
Thanks to the Comrades who
provided desserts.
The Thursday night darts had 11
players taking aim at the boards.
Winners were: first, Glenn Zehr and
Sandra Josling; second, Ken Bird
and Marlene Rutledge; high, Wayne
Smith and Gord Jacklin, 103. It was
nice to have more attending after a
couple of bad weeks of weather, flu,
vacation or other reasons.
The Friday night supper of roast
pork was enjoyed by a great crowd
of around 30. This week will be
chicken breast.
Friday night will also be the
Valentine’s Pub Night with wings,
fries and meat draws. Drop by and
grab a bite and maybe win a little
something for your sweetheart. The
evening starts at 7 p.m.
The Saturday afternoon euchre
had seven tables of players. Winners
were: first, Joann MacDonald and
Dorothy Carter, 73; second, Shirley
and Dianne, 69; third, Ruth Sharpin
and Viola Adams, 68; low, Jean
Bewley and Elunid McNair, 38;
lone hands, Jim Devereaux and

weeks.
Comrades of Branch 218 who had

darts played in Durham on Saturday.
Playing singles were Ron Schmidt
and Eric Ross and neither will
advance. The doubles pairs were
Eric Ross and Andy Adams, Ken
Bird and Bob Richardson and Ron
Schmidt and Daisy Wong. The pair
of Eric and Andy finished in second
place and will advance to provincial
play in Toronto. The dart team
foursome of Andy, Eric, Ron and
Daisy had a good day, but will not
advance. Congratulations to all our
Comrades.
The Sunday night dance was
cancelled due to the predicted bad
weather. Events have to be cancelled
early in the day so the proper folks
can be notified.
The Valentine’s Luncheon held at
the Brussels Legion on Monday had
a small group of 36 enjoy the roast
beef dinner.
The Brussels birthday ladies
group had 13 in their group to
celebrate the lone birthday of Bev
Palmer. The other birthday celebrant
in the crowd was Jack Cardiff. They
each received a chocolate rose.
There were five door prizes for
some lucky guests.
The comment was made that folks
who did not attend sure missed a
great dinner and fabulous desserts.
