Spring coats and running shoes
were very popular this past week. A
few senior students were even seen
wearing shorts to school. I agree the
weather has been great, but I think
shorts are really pushing it. Theflowerbed on the south side of ourhome thinks it is spring.
I have a mum that has about two
inches of new growth showing and
the sedums all have new growth at
the bottom. When the cold weather
arrives again, and I guess it will, I
hope it doesn’t set back the
plants for when the real spring
arrives.
We hear that Doreen Hackwell has
moved to Queensway Nursing home
in Hensall. We hope she is getting
used to her new surroundings and
wish her well.
Howard Hackwell is doing well
but the cold bothers him, so he is notout and about as much this time ofyear.
Congratulations to Brad and
Becky Stephenson on the birth of a
son last week. Proud grandparents of
the new grandson, Case, are Les and
Susan Stephenson.
Welcome back to Roger Swantz at
Cook’s, Division of P&H Walton.
Roger has been off with heart
problems for a few months, but
reports that he is doing just fine and
glad to be back at work.
He looks forward to seeing the
many farmers around Walton this
spring.
Our condolences to Barb Martinand family on the passing ofhusband Lyle Martin. He will be
sadly missed by his children
Grant and Wanda and their
families.
Lyle was a well-known dairy
farmer in the Ethel area and will be
missed by the community.
Our sympathies are extended to
Bob and Doreen Raymond on the
loss of their son, Bruce of
Kincardine. We also convey our
regrets to wife Maureen and children
Megan and Patrick and their
families. He will be missed by his
siblings Keith, Carol, Colleen and
Margaret. Bruce was a well-knownBrussels man and was active as anOptimist before moving. He was a
carpenter by trade for many years. A
visitation will be held in Kincardine
on Sunday evening from 7-9 p.m.
Our condolences to all his family
and friends.
The Cranbrook dart players had
another exciting evening and lots of
laughs on Feb. 1. There are always
some frustrated players not hitting
the mark they intend. Top honours
for the ladies went to Jane Zwep
hitting 121 and Nathan
Klingenberg with a high of 105 for
the men.

PEOPLE AROUNDWALTON
Families continue vacation despite warm weather
The weather has been so great,
going south seems unnecessary, but
a few local couples and families had
plans made, so off they went. A
belated honeymoon was the reason
one couple was away. Mark and
Caitlin Gillis married last July, but
waited for a honeymoon/ vacation in
Antigua. They spent a week at the
Sandal Grande Antigua Resort at
Dickinson Bay, Saint Johns,
Antigua. It was to be a five-hour
flight from Toronto, but a faulty
navigational system delayed their
take off for five hours, so not a great
start to the trip. The rest of the trip
was fantastic.
Their resort was gorgeous and
they stayed in the Mediterranean
Village side where they stayed in the
Monte Carlo honeymoon suite. The
luxury suites had marble and wood
fixtures and they had a glass and
marble rainfall shower – fantastic!
They enjoyed a beautiful view of the
Caribbean Sea and the vast 27-acre
resort. They sampled the fare at the
12 various restaurants and enjoyed
the water activities of the Eastern
Caribbean’s largest pool. They went
on a catamaran trip around the island
and Caitlin went snorkeling among
the coral reef. She took beautiful
underwater pictures of colorful
schools of fish, a barracuda fish and
she saw a spotted eagle stingray on
the ocean floor. They took a bus into
St. John’s and went ziplining
through the rainforest and did an
obstacle course. The pair had an
incredible honeymoon vacation and
plan to return to the island paradise
again some day.
The Dalton family of Geoff,
Michele, Brandon, Hannah and
Brady spent 10 days in Florida for a
family vacation. They went by
airplane and young Brandon reports
it was really great riding the airplane
and that you have to wear a seatbelt.
The family rented a house in
Kissimmee and the weather was
great with temperatures above
average and hot. They were able to
swim in the pool everyday and to eat
outside every night. The family
visited the Magic Kingdom, where
Brandon tells me he saw Minnie
Mouse, Donald Duck and Buzz
Lightyear to name a few. They went
to the Island of Adventure at
Universal Studios and Brandon says
he really liked the Cat in the Hat
Ride and the Fish ride. Michele tells
us it was the best family trip to date
and they had a wonderful time.
Returning from a week’s vacation
in Dominican Republic are Greg
and Sharon Wilson. They were in
Punta Cana, a favourite area for
them. They spend their time resting
and relaxing and Greg says eating.
One afternoon while sitting on the
beach, they were surprised to see
neighbour and friend Mike Thomas
walking up the beach. They had
known he was away at the same
time, but that he was at a resort a
couple of miles away. They were
quite surprised to meet up with him.
There are two couples in our area
who are both happy and sad at the
same time. Patty Banks and Jim
Cook and Richard and Marjorie
Horst said goodbye and safe travels
to their children, Tanner and Loni,
last week. It was a tearful farewell
for Patty as she watched Tanner and
Loni depart for a four-month trip to
Australia and New Zealand. It is a
happy time for the couple but a sad
time because they will be away for
so long.
The couple will be backpacking
around the countries. They left from
London airport, flew to Toronto,
then to Los Angeles and then to
Australia. Patty was amazed at how
little luggage they were able to pack
but was pleased they decided to take
their laptop. They are planning to
Skype everyone to keep in touch. It
sounds like a wonderful adventure
and we hope to have updates from
Patty about their travels.
A belated welcome back to Valerie
Shortreed and Clyde and Cathy
McClure. They spent a week at
Santa Maria, Cuba in mid-January.
Santa Maria is a very small island
just off mainland Cuba. There are
only resorts on the island and no
permanent residents live on the
island. All the visitors, workers and
supplies are transported via the
connecting causeway to the resorts.
They enjoyed the sand, the sun and
the relaxing time while away.
Congratulations to Krista
Shortreed and Adam Verkley who
were engaged recently. Valerie
reports that they have been very busy
in the last weeks, buying a house and
starting the renovating, booking
wedding venues, shopping for a
dress, a new job opportunity for
Adam and all that goes with getting
ready for an August wedding
date. Congrats and happy
planning!

An area gentleman told me about
another scam after reading the
article last week. He answered the
phone to an inquiry about
confirming his address for the
delivery of his new computer. He
disputed the fact that he was
expecting a new computer and they
replied if he was to confirm his
credit card number, they assured
him had indeed ordered the
computer. He replied by hanging
up.
Never give your credit card
number out over the phone to
someone you do not know!
There was a nice number in the
congregation at Duff’s United
Church on Sunday. They were
greeted by Cindy Poland and Paul
McCallum to the worship service
held in the basement. Members
participating in the service included
Emma and Adam Baan reading the
scripture, Psalm and the Minute for
Mission. Paul and Cindy gathered
the offering.
Rev. Peter’s reflection was entitled
“The Healing Touch”. He referred to
the many scriptures that revealed the
power of Jesus’ touch. It describes
how Jesus healed the blind, the sick,
the fevered and yet Jesus would
enforce the idea that their faith had
also made them well. We pray for
those who are suffering with health
problems in our ministry and believe
in the faith of the healing power.
Medicinal science has its limits and
a spiritual dimension contributes to
our overall wellbeing.
As Christians, we can offer the
healing hand to those around us who
are suffering with the struggles of
providing for their family and
through the power of faith and
prayer.
Announcements included a
Valentine’s Luncheon to be held
after service on Sunday, Feb. 12 and
the band will provide special music.
Plans are underway for the 100th
anniversary of Duff’s United being
held on June 9 and 10. An open
house will be held and we are
encouraging families to look for
pictures taken at Duff’s over the
years for display. Photos of special
events, communion classes, Sunday
school concerts, kitchen prep,
youth group plays, etc. They can
be newspaper clippings or other
pieces of memorabilia you may
have hidden away and kept for
some reason – this is the reason.
Bring them to Phyllis Mitchell or
Monique Baan and they can be
scanned and returned or you can
lend them for display. Don’t delay in
looking for your items so the
committee has a chance to scan and
organize the items. June is just five
months away. Pass the word on to
your family who live afar and
hopefully they can plan to attend the
celebration. There will be a special
service on Sunday, and barbecue
lunch and entertainment through the
afternoon.
Celebrating birthdays this past
week were John Driscoll, Marilyn
McDonald, Mike Durrell, Amy
Whyte, Pamela Hackwell, Heather
Williamson, Arnold den Dekker,
Katie Dionne, George Kruse,
Emilee Bennett, Cody Nichol, Lois
Todd, Matthew Coleman, Annette
Lewington, Aiden Southgate, Ken
Shortreed, Sydney Warwick and
Brent Wilkinson.

Turbulent truths
Citizens of Huron East descended on the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre to
learn about a planned electrical line that would run north from St. Columban past Brussels
and to Wingham from a proposed wind energy project. Late last month experts were on hand
from St. Columban Energy LP to answer any questions visitors may have about the turbines
or the power line. (Denny Scott photo)
