Ironmen move to 2-0 in series against Kincardine
The Wingham Ironmen hold a
two-games-to-none lead over the
Kincardine Bulldogs in their
Western Junior C Hockey League
quarter-final series.
After posting a 4-3 decision over
the Bulldogs last Friday evening at
the Davidson Centre in Kincardine,
in game one of the series, the
Ironmen skated to a 7-1 victory at
the North Huron Wescast
Community Complex on Saturday
evening in game two.
Game three in the best-of-seven
series was played last night
(Wednesday) in Kincardine. Game
four will be played Friday in
Wingham, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
Game five, if necessary, will be
played Saturday in Wingham,
beginning at 7:30 p.m. Game six, if
required will be played in
Kincardine on Sunday, beginning at
4 p.m. A seventh game, if needed,
will be played Tuesday in Wingham.
Prior to the start of Saturday’s
contest in Wingham, Aaron
Armstrong of the Ironmen was
presented his most valuable player
trophy by league convenor Steve
Coulter of Brussels.
The Ironmen took a 2-0 lead in the
first period of game two on Saturday
on goals from Joel Bowman and
Justin Jacklin. Tyler Kellum and
Brett Brophy assisted on Bowman’s
goal and Dylan Williams and Steve
Hutchison helped out on Jacklin’s
marker.
The Ironmen outscored the
Bulldogs 5-1 in the second period.
There was no scoring in the third
period.
Getting the goals in the second
period for Wingham were Evan
Ducharme, from Nic Carter and Phil
Boertien; Joey Terwood unassisted;
Bowman on the power play, from
Armstrong; Boertien, from Brophy
and Wade Stephenson and
Armstrong on the power play from
Kellum and Brophy. Paul Stewart
was the lone goal getter for
Kincardine.
Coach Chad Haggitt of Blyth said
it was a big win on Saturday and that
the players came out and played
hard.
With the home game on Saturday,
Haggitt was able to get the match-
ups on the ice he wanted to against
the Bulldogs and it seemed to work.
He said he hopes everyone keeps
scoring and the Ironmen keep rolling
in the remainder of the series.
However he thinks it will be a close
series.
“I don’t think we’re going to walk
away with it”, said Haggitt. They
had an off night and I’m sure they’re
going to come out hard Wednesday
and try to take it back.
Forward Wade Stephenson of
Brussels said it was an awesome win
for the Ironmen. The Ironmen have a
big jump in the series, going up two
games on the Bulldogs.
“They are a good team. They
battle hard right to the end,” he said.
“It was nice to score a win,
especially a 7-1 win and going back
to Kincardine.”
He still expects the series to be
close as Kincardine does battle right
to the end.
“They can score and put the puck
in the net,” said Stephenson.
Scoring the winning goal in game
one of the series, was the biggest
goal he has scored in his career.
“It just felt good, this being my
last year (in Junior),” he said.
Wingham outshot Kincardine in
the game 39-33 and was 2-13 on the
power play.
Stephenson scored two third
period goals on Friday with the
winner coming at 19:08 of the final
period, as he propelled the Ironmen
to a 4-3 win in game one of the
series.
Kellum and Bowman also scored
for the Ironmen. Scoring for
Kincardine were Greg Scott, Joel
Alton and Mike Smailes.
Wingham outshot the Bulldogs
43-25 and were 0-5 on the power
play.
The Ironmen concluded the
regular season on Feb. 1 in
Walkerton and were handed a 9-5
setback by the Hawks.
Stephenson netted a pair of goals
for the Ironmen, with single markers
coming off the sticks of Boertien,
Brophy and Jacklin.

The Wingham Golf and Curling
Club hosted the ladies bonspiel this
past weekend. The girls enjoyed
some great curling but most of all
shared tons of laughs. The first draw
saw the team of Cathy Skinn, Joan
Bridge, Nanci Barrett and Barb
Black coming out on top with the
Elston sisters Emily and Leanne
along with Brittany Horton and
Tiffany Brown claiming victory in
the second draw. The Skinn team
captured the trophy for overall
champions.
Jennifer Elston again did a
fantastic job organizing this event
and with Donelda Cottrill and Emily
Elston’s help decorating had the club
looking awesome. Volunteers Donna
Bieman and Julie O’Grady both did
a superb job both at the prize table
and helping Cheryl in the kitchen.
In regular league action on
Monday, Jan. 30 the daytime
winning skips were Mac Inglis, Bob
Johnston, Clayt Ruppel, Jim Taylor,
Les Shaw and Wayne Forster.
Monday night men saw Johnston
pick up his second win of the day
along with Ken Wood and Bruce
Robertson.
The Tuesday night ladies winning
skips were Jill Eadie, Emily Elston
and Cathy Skinn. The competitive
winners were teams Niel Edgar and
Earl Fitch.
Wednesday night Carolyn Fear
and Scott Bridge went away with
victory with closest shots to the
button. Robert Grein also curled his
team to the win.
The Thursday daytime curlers had
12 teams hit the ice and John Mann,
Bruce Robertson, Roy Aitchison,
Jim Taylor, Bob Crawford
and Les Shaw led their teams to
wins.
The Thursday Belgrave winners
were teams Dave Inglis, Cam Cook
and Bruce Howson. Friday night
Wayne Waechter and Bill McDonald
skipped their rinks to victory.
This weekend, Feb. 11-12 the club
is holding the Sweetheart Bonspiel
with the doctor recruitment spiel to
take place on Saturday, Feb. 25.
Both spiels are still looking for
curlers.
OUT THE HACK
The Thursday night family and
Friday night mixed leagues are still
looking for curlers for the final draw.
Anyone interested in joining or
coming out to learn should give the
club a call. Superintendent Bruce
Pewtress has the ice in good
condition and with the installation of
the new heaters curling has become
very comfortable to play.
