The Citizen, 2012-02-02, Page 17THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 2012. PAGE 17. Councillor reports opt-out rate for waste While the numbers are still very unofficial, Central Huron Councillor Burk Metzger reported that 14.1 per cent of the municipality has opted out of the waste and recycling co- collection being provided by the Bluewater Recycling Association (BRA). Metzger updated council on the numbers at the Jan. 27 Committee of the Whole meeting. He said that with 3,429 recycling bins in Central Huron currently being serviced by the BRA (approximately 1,400 in Clinton, approximately 1,200 in Goderich Township and approximately 800 in Hullett) 485 people had opted out of the service to be provided by the BRA starting April 1. The percentage breaks out that just over 15 per cent of the Clinton and Hullett Wards have decided to opt out of the program, while just 12.7 per cent of the residents in Goderich Township have decided to find another waste collection alternative. Metzger said that the BRA’spresident Francis Veilleux is “quitehappy” with how the numbers are coming in. He said that an average of 20 per cent of residents opting out of the program is to be expected, so to be under that number is great.Metzger also said that concernsabout missing the mailed-out notice and not calling to opt out of the program in time should not be as dire as they have been. He said that if a notice is missed and the BRAdrops a bin off to a home that doesn’twant it, there is a way to still opt out and not be charged. “If someone misses the notice and a bin shows up, it won’t be a problem,” Metzger said. “There willbe a mechanism in place if thathappens.” Metzger said the homeowner can simply call the BRA and ask to have Business Directory Affordable CAR AND TRUCK RENTALS Large & Small Trucks fridge carts - piano dollys- moving blankets Complete Selection of Cars Our rates qualify for insurance replacement Passenger Vans full size or mini STRICKLANDS 344 Huron Rd. 519-524-9381 GODERICH 1-800-338-1134 NEW CONSTRUCTION AGRICULTURAL RENOVATIONS RESIDENTIAL Call 519-527-1538 Tarion Home Warranty Builders ZAHND REAL ESTATE LTD. The Goderich Horticultural Society will be hosting the evening and Marlene Wynnyk from The Healing Arc will give a presentation on Sea Buckthorn berries, juices, jams and jellies. This product is unique and has various health advantages. A social time will be held from 7 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and the presentation will begin around 7:30 p.m. THE WALKERBURN CLUB Members of the Walkerburn Club met at Pat Hunking’s home on Jan. 16. Mary Elder was president of the day. Being as it was Martin Luther King Jr. Day, she read some very interesting facts of his past, as well as five lessons on how we treat people. Mary followed the readings with prayer. Eileen McClinchey read the secretary’s report and Ila Cunningham gave the treasurer’s report. Roll call was taken. The remaining part of the afternoon was spent cutting out quilt blocks to make more lap quilts. Dorothy Schneider had a very interesting reading about “Why God made Mothers” and the answers were given by Grade 2 students. Pat served a delicious lunch and a social half hour was enjoyed before parting for home. The next meeting is on Feb. 2 at Pat Hunking’s home once again. Ila Cunningham will be co-president, Pat Hunking will provide lunch and Vera Penfound will set the program. The club is making plans to sing at Anfield Retirement Home again in February.
