The Wingham Ironmen played
two Western Junior C Hockey
League contests on the weekend.
And, once again they managed a
split in the two games.
After falling by a score of 5-2 to
the Mitchell Hawks on Friday at the
North Huron Wescast Community
Complex, the Ironmen defeated the
Mount Forest Patriots 7-4 on
Saturday evening Mount Forest.
Nic Carter opened the scoring on
Friday as he tallied a goal at 9:22 of
period one. Justin Jacklin and Evan
Ducharme assisted. Tyler Mason
tied the score at 9:57.
Brent Kipfer put the Hawks in
front at 7:49 of the second period.
Tyler Egerdee gave Mitchell a 3-1
advantage at 12:58 with a powerplay
goal.
Joel Bowman put the Ironmen one
goal back at the three-minute mark
of the third period. Brett Brophy
assisted on the powerplay marker.
Jacob Patterson restored the Hawks’
two-goal lead at 12:51 of the third
period and Egerdee concluded the
scoring at 19:12 with an empty-net
goal.
Wingham outshot the Hawks 32-
31 and were 1-4 on the powerplay.
Player Cole Pellett of Bluevale
said it wasn’t a very good game for
the Ironmen and that Mitchell seems
to have the Ironmen’s number.
Pellett has been out of the lineup
for the past few weeks with a
concussion. “It’s not a serious one
though,” he said. “It’s just a mild
one.”
After missing five or six games
due to the concussion, Pellett said he
will be skating at practice this week
so may return to the lineup as soon
as this weekend. However, he should
be back in time for the playoffs.
Assistant coach Todd Bender of
Listowel said Mitchell justoutplayed the Ironmen in the thirdperiod. “The pucks were bouncing
their way,” he said. “I think we
played well, they just played better
than us in the third period. They had
a little bit more jump.”
With Wingham and Mitchell
battling for the third playoff spot,
the Hawks won the season series 4-
2 and outscored the Ironmen 20-17.
Bender said unfortunately Mitchell
had Wingham’s number this year.
He said the puck was in the
Mitchell end the whole first period,
but the Ironmen were unable to
capitalize on all their chances.
With three games left, following
Friday’s loss, the Ironmen will put
the loss behind them and look to win
the remaining three games and get
ready for the playoffs.
“That’s what I told the guys in the
room,” he said. “You have to beat
everybody come playoff time
anyways.”
“We were going for second and
then we were going for third,” he
said. “We’ll probably get fourth, we
still have home ice advantage.”
In the game against Mount Forest,
three players had three-point games.
Defenceman Brophy had two goals
and an assist, while forwards Aaron
Armstrong and Wade Stephenson
each had a goal and two helpers.
Steve Hutchison collected a pair of
goals and Travis Donaldson had a
goal and an assist.
The Ironmen outshot the Patriots
48-41 and were 1-3 on the
powerplay.
The Ironmen conclude the regular
season with a pair of games this
weekend. They host the Patriots on
Friday, beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the
complex and then finish the season
on the road by travelling to
Walkerton on Saturday for a 6:30
p.m. contest against the Hawks.

Well done
The Blyth Midget Girls broomball team came away with a
gold medal last weekend at the annual Mildmay
tournament. They won their final game in overtime to take
top honours. Presenting their championship banner are,

The Saugeen Maitland Bantam
AA Lightning travelled to Ottawa to
compete in the Winterlude Classic
tournament and came home with the
championship banner.
After arriving Thursday evening,
the coaches ran some skating drills
on the Rideau Canal to get rid of the
bus legs. The fresh air and extra
skate must have done the trick, as
the girls reeled off six straight wins
while only allowing one goal all
weekend en route to the
championship. The Bolts knocked
off the Scarborough Sharks,
Kingston Ice Wolves and the Kanata
Rangers in the preliminary round
robin by scores of 5-0, 3-0 and 4-0
respectively. Another 5-0 quarter-
final win over the Quebec Citadelles
paved the way to a semi-final berth
against the Ottawa Senators, a team
ranked fifth overall in Canada for
Bantam girls.
In perhaps their best game of the
tournament, the Lightning blanked
the Senators 3-0 in their home arena.
In the finals against the Barrie
Sharks, it seemed as if the injury and
flu bugs that had been plaguing the
Bolts all weekend would finally
catch up to them. However, down to
a bench of nine or 10 skaters,
the Lightning defeated the Sharks
3-1.
Rebecca Ropp and Morgan Baker
shared the goaltending duties for the
weekend, stopping all but one shot
and adding another five shutouts to
the team total.
Scoring on the weekend were
Miranda Lantz (six), Jessica Dales
(three), Lexi Smith (three), Tori
Terpstra (two), Neve VanPelt (two),
Jamie Simpson (two), Cassidy
Mason (two), Maddie Duncan (two),
Avery Reeves and Hannah Herman.
Contributing in the assists column
were Ashley Lawrence, Ciara Lark
and Nikki Zabel.
This weekend the girls play in
their final game of the regular
season, a Saturday afternoon match
against the Lady Rangers in
Kitchener.
