(Photo submitted) Midget Girls edge out Mildmay 2-1 The Blyth Brussels Midget Girls hosted the Mildmay Carrick Midget Girls on Monday, Jan. 9 in Blyth and came away with a 2-1 win. The game was fast paced with some great skating from the players. Plenty of shots were taken which gave both goalies a good workout. Blyth Brussels started the scoring for the night with the first goal of the game with Lauren McNichol scoring a shorthanded goal near the end of the first period. Halfway through the second period Heidi Raynard scored a goal that was assisted by Tori Kellington. The Mildmay team finally put one on the scoreboard in the last period but it wouldn’t be enough as Blyth Brussels hung on to win 2-1. The girls played a great game and are looking forward to hearing how the playdowns are going to pan out for them. The Blyth Brussels Midget Girls team also saw action on Monday, Jan. 16 in Blyth against the Lucknow Sepoys but a final score was unavailable at press time. They next take to the ice in Blyth against the Mildmay Monarchs on Jan. 23. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m. Atoms double Sailors The Blyth Brussels Atom AE team travelled to Goderich on Jan. 14 to take on the Sailors and came away with a 4-2 victory. The first period saw the puck going end to end with many scoring opportunities for both teams. Cole Zwep made many great saves in net for Blyth Brussels along with strong defence from Ryan Jacklin, Kesler Jardin, Nick McArter and Lucas Townsend. Goderich was able to get one past and score with four minutes remaining in the period. Myles Johnston scored less than two minutes later assisted by Lucas Townsend to tie the game 1-1. The second period again saw plenty of back and forth action and a lot of scoring chances but it was not until one minute left in the period that Wade Machan score unassisted. Goderich scored in the third period to tie the game. Nathan Brown scored to give Blyth Brussels the lead, assisted by Tanner Boven and four minutes later Johnston netted another goal, assisted by Nathan Brown to end the game with a 4-2 win. Connor Brooks played a very strong game as the affiliated player for the team. The Blyth Brussels Atom AE squad was glad to see Ryan Jacklin back on the ice recovered from his broken wrist. Jacklin will be able to help the team as they take on an undetermined challenger on Jan. 21 at the Blyth and District Community Centre at 11:30 a.m. See histories and historic photographs on the Huron History section of our website www.northhuron.on.ca The Citizen Skips and Stones – By Bruce Skinn All the leagues were back in action last week at the Wingham Golf and Curling Club. On Monday, Jan. 9 the daytime curlers kicked off the week with John Mann, Bruce Robertson, Roy Aitchison, Glenn McMichael, Bob Crawford and Wayne Forster skipping their teams to wins. On Monday night Bob Johnston, Stewart Leedham and Mann went home with victories. The Tuesday night ladies winning teams were Keslie Eadie and the Elston sisters Emily and Leanne. The Tuesday competitive league saw Niel Edgar come out on top while teams Jim Ross and Earl Fitch settled for a tie. The Wednesday mixed winners were Jill Eadie, Scott Bridge and Wayne Horton. The Thursday daytime curlers saw John Mann pick up his third win for the week. Hugh Clugston, Bob Johnston, Bruce Robertson, Wayne Forster and Jim Taylor also skipped their teams to victory. On Thursday, Belgrave skips going home winners were Bruce Howson, Larry Robinson and Cam Cook. The Friday night mixed league wrapped up the week with Lynn Hickey and Simon Logtenberg skipping their teams to wins. This Saturday, Jan. 21 the bonspiel season kicks off with the Country mixed followed by the Country Men on Jan. 28. The Ladies Bonspiel will be held Saturday, Feb. 4 with the Sweetheart Spiel on Feb. 11 and 12. All bonspiels are still looking for curlers and anyone interested in having some great curling fun can contact Bruce at the Pro Shop. OUT OF THE HACK NEWS The installation of the new heaters has had a good impact at the Wingham Curling Club. The curlers’ playing conditions have vastly improved with the more comfortable temperature and keener ice than the club has enjoyed for years. No sweeping here A member of the men’s Cyclones team tries to control himself and the ball during the final match of a broomball tournament at the Blyth and District Community Centre over the weekend.
