A new collection of books and
resources can now be accessed
through the Huron County Library.
The Newcomer Settlement
Collection consists of stories
relating to the immigrant experience.
In addition, and for those whose
journeys have brought them here to
Huron County, the collection also
includes a variety of books, audio
books and English as a Second
Language (ESL) resources that will
help ease settlement in Huron and
enhance their language skills.
The collection of resources was
developed upon recommendation of
the Huron Local Immigration
Partnership Council. The
partnership, which is funded by
Citizenship and Immigration
Canada, is composed of
representatives from a variety of
organizations and services from
Huron County and beyond.
Meighan Wark, newly-appointed
Director of Cultural Services and
County Librarian, is pleased to see
the efforts of all involved finally
available. “It’s been a good
community effort that would not be
possible without the information
provided by the partners in this
initiative”.
Kelly Harrison, English as a
Second Language (ESL) Co-
ordinator with the The Centres for
Employment and Learning of the
Avon Maitland District School
Board states, “We offer free ESL
training to adults in Huron and Perth
Counties with funding from the
Government of Ontario and we are
thrilled to now have these resources
available through the libraries to
supplement classroom learning.”
Edina Fair, ESL instructor at The
Centre for Employment and
Learning in Goderich, indicates that,
“Listening to audio books and at the
same time reading the written words
lends to developing both good
listening skills and comprehension
while being exposed to the sounds of
the English language.” Fair, who
often takes students to the local
library as part of the program says,
“Having this enhanced resource
available at libraries is a natural
complement to the program offered
by the centres.”
Bayfield resident and community
member sitting on the Partnership
Council Judy Keightley, is an
independent ESL instructor offering
a privately run ESL immersion
program from her home, Lingen
Lodge. Each year Judy hosts a small
number of students from throughout
the world interested in a two-to-four-
week-long homestay language
program. Judy says, “It is a great
opportunity for my students to be
able to access this service at our
local library now. It’s even
something that our book club may
use too, for choosing our monthly
selection; hearing about others’
journeys to a new country is always
a compelling read.”
A list of titles included in the
collection can be viewed online
through the library’s catalogue at
http://www.huroncounty.ca/library/
or by visiting any of the 12 branches
of the Huron County Library. Under
“Have you Read” in the catalogue,
select “Newcomer Settlement
Collection” to see the full list of
resources available.
If you are interested in learning
more about ESL programs offered in
Huron contact any one of The
Centres for Employment and
Learning located in the five major
municipalities in Huron. The Local
Immigration Partnership is funded
by Citizenship and Immigration
Canada and is being led by the
County of Huron Planning and
Development Department.
