The Wingham Ironmen went up
against the top two teams in the
Western Junior C Hockey League on
the weekend and came away with a
pair of victories.
After doubling up the Hanover
Barons 4-2 at the P and H Centre on
Friday evening, the Ironmen crushed
the league-leading Walkerton
Hawks, 7-2, at the North Huron
Wescast Community Complex on
Saturday.
Aaron Armstrong and Travis
Donaldson each enjoyed a
productive game against the Hawks.
Armstrong had one goal and six
assists, while Donaldson had three
goals and three assists.
Walkerton opened the scoring at
11:30 of the first period as Andy
Mitchell scored a shorthanded goal.
Donaldson scored two goals to give
the Ironmen a 2-1 advantage after
the first period. Donaldson and
Wade Stephenson scored second
period goals for the Ironmen to give
Wingham a 4-1 lead after 40
minutes. Scoring for the Ironmen in
the third period were Drew Shantz,
Joel Bowman and Armstrong.
Drew Davidson replied for the
Hawks.
The Ironmen outshot the Hawks 31-
28 and were 4-10 on the power play.
Ironmen coach Chad Haggitt of
Blyth said it was good to beat
Walkerton. This victory marked the
second time the Ironmen have
defeated them, having beaten them
once in Walkerton in a shootout.
“It was a good win,” he said.
The coach said the key to the
Ironmen’s success on Saturday was
that the team never quit.
“We had a 5-1 lead up there and
we kind of went back into a trap and
tonight we kept going, we kept
pushing all night,” he said. “It
worked out.”
In regards to Armstrong picking
up seven points, Haggitt said he is
just a gifted hockey player.
For a while the Ironmen were
being outshot and still winning and
Haggitt said it felt good.
“Jeff (Puddephatt) is a good
goalie. Since we picked Jeff up,
we’re confident with the guy in the
back end and we get outshot once in
a while, that happens,” he said.
Forward Evan Ducharme of
Brussels said it was a great feeling
to beat Walkerton.
“We’ve been working hard against
them in all the games and they’ve
been close ones, they’re the team to
beat in the league so it’s a nice feeling
to know we can beat them,” he said.
Graham Ashcroft gave the
Ironmen a 1-0 lead in the first period
of Friday’s game in Hanover, on the
power play. Rob Lucciantonio tied
the score at one at 1:23 of the second
period and Alex Kuntz gave the
Barons a 2-1 lead at 2:37.
Stephenson tied the game at 6:15
and Donaldson netted what proved
to be the winner at 15:20 on the
power play. Stephenson tallied a
power play marker at 16:56 of the
third period.
Each team had 26 shots on goal
and the Ironmen were 3-8 on the
power play.
The Ironmen have one game this
weekend and it’s on the road. They
travel to Kincardine on Friday for an
8:30 p.m. contest against the
Bulldogs.

PeeWee LL team goes 1-0-2 in Durham tournament
The Blyth Brussels PeeWee Local
League (LL) team travelled to
Durham on Sunday, Jan. 8 for a one-
day tournament.
The team’s first game was against
Collingwood and the PeeWee LL
team fought hard but lost in a shoot-
out.
Blyth Brussels was the first to
score with a nice shot from Wyatt.
Collingwood evened the score in the
second but Damon scored with a
pass from Cody giving the squad a
brief lead before Collingwood tied it
up again. The teams then went into a
five-minute sudden-death overtime
which resulted in no score from
either team.
After two rounds of a shootout
Collingwood was able to put in
back-to-back goals and Blyth
Brussels couldn’t find the back of
the net resulting in the loss.
Game two was against Normanby
and saw Blyth Brussels once again
go into overtime where they would
triumph this time.
The boys scored three goals in the
first period, with Normanby getting
one goal. Wyatt scored two with
awesome slapshots from the blue
line with assists from Dylan,
Hudson, Brock and Cody.
Cody received a nice pass from
Dylan and scored to end the action
for the first period.
The second period saw no score
from either team but awesome
defense from Dylan, Jeff, Hudson
and Evan as well as goaltender
Derrick standing on his head making
great saves.
Normanby scored two goals in the
third period to tie it up.
Overtime would prove useless
again as neither team scored, leading
to another shootout.
After misses from both teams
Cody put one in to tie it up,
prompting a second shootout,
however this one would end better
for Blyth Brussels as Hudson snuck
one past Normanby’s goaltender.
Game three was the “C” final and
saw Blyth Brussels taking on
Durham.
Durham scored two goals early in
the first period, but only briefly held
the two-point lead as Joseph put one
in the net with a pass from Brock
and Dean.
Durham widened the gap during
the second, scoring another marker
to put the score at 3-1.
The third period belonged to Blyth
Brussels however as the squad came
out swinging.
Cody scored off of a pass from
Mason.
Damon scored with a pass from
Wyatt to tie the game which led to a
third overtime decision in as many
games.
The boys didn’t waste time
however as, with goaltender Derrick
holding off the other team, Joseph
put one into the Durham net to win
the “C” final.
The PeeWee LL team next takes to
the ice against the BCH Ice Dogs in
Hensall on Jan. 14 at 1:30 p.m.
