Wedding Announcement Two lives untied in friendship, two friends united in love, one love united in Christ. John and Nellie Hoogendoorn and Luke and Shirley Bouman are pleased to announce the upcoming marriage of their children Janelle Renee Hoogendoorn to Darren Gerrit Bouman on Saturday, January 7, 2012 at 1:30 pm at the Clinton Christian Reformed Church United Way seeksfunds from M-T Morris-Turnberry councillors heard a presentation from the United Way of Perth-Huron at its Dec. 20 meeting. Ryan Erb, Executive Director and Lisa Wilde, executive director of the Emily Murphy Centre and chair of the United Way’s Social Research & Planning Council (SRPC), explained that the United Way supports 22 community agencies, five of which are active in Morris-Turnberry. These agencies assisted 274 individuals from Morris-Turnberry in the last year. The current campaign goal is $1,052,011 and as of late December 55 per cent of the goal had been raised. “It’s been a difficult year to fundraise,” Erb said. “We will be challenged to meet our goal.” The SRPC conducts studies on what services are needed in Huron and Perth. For instance it was instrumental in bringing the 211 social service information helpline to the region. Following the August tornado, 1,700 people used the 211 service within the first week to find the services that could help them through the tragedy. The pair left a request for a donation of $500 to the United Way campaign and a further $500 to support the SRPC. *** Building construction was down about $2 million in Morris- Turnberry to the end of November, Steve Fortier, chief building official reported to council. Permits for nearly $5.2 million worth of construction had beenissued. However, Fortier said that permits for a couple of large projects that would likely be issued in December to help close the gap. The largest sector contributing to the total was agricultural livestock buildings and additions with $2.2 million to the end of November. *** Nancy Michie, administrator, clerk-treasurer, informed council that the rate for the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) had increased 15 per cent for 2012. She told council that a health and safety meeting had been held with employees to discuss new policies to try to reduce musculoskeletal injuries. “Hopefully we can reduce our claims,” Michie said. (Vicky Bremner photo) Ontario Pork Industry names cause and chair for Hog Jog The Ontario Pork Industry Council (OPIC) is pleased to announce that all pledges from the 2012 Hog Jog will be going to One Care Home and Community Support Services’ Meals on Wheels Program – to be used specifically to purchase commercial gas stoves. This contribution to One Care and the Meals on Wheels will be made in memory of Ruth Schuler. Ruth and her husband Fred established Schuler Farms outside of Stratford after emigrating from Switzerland 27 years ago. The Schuler’s became major stakeholders in the hog industry, mentors for many and a very respected name. Fred and Ruth have raised four great sons, who have become part of the family farms. In addition to working on the farm, Ruth was a giving, community-minded individual who volunteered endless hours of her time. One of her many causes was the Meals on Wheels program, delivering warm meals along with her warm smile and enthusiasm for life. Ruth passed away this past spring after a short illness. The One Care Meals on Wheels program delivers to all of Huron County as well as Stratford and surrounding area. The program delivers 42,000 meals each year of which 22,000 are hot meals delivered to clients in their homes by volunteers. As there are limited hot meal providers in Huron County, there is currently a waiting list. The gas stoves will help to expand the number of hot meals delivered to clients throughout Huron County. For more information on the ONE CARE Meals on Wheels program and other services visit www.onecaresupport.ca Meals on Wheels is one of the home and community support programs offered by One Care which enable seniors and people with disabilities to enjoy a good quality life as they age at home. The Hog Jog has raised a combined total of $154,500 for six very worthy local causes over the past six years. Past causes were the Parkinson Society of Southwestern Ontario, The Heart and Stroke Foundation’s AED program, The Alzheimer Society of Perth County, The Lung Association Asthma Awareness program, the Emergency Department of the Stratford General Hospital and National Service Dogs training Centre. OPIC’s Pork for a Cause Hog Jog is a 3.5km run/walk and 10- kilometre run held each year during the Ontario Pork Congress. The goal of the Hog Jog is to raise awareness about an important local cause, give back to the community, and celebrate the people of the pork industry. It is also about having fun! Participation has increased to 450 walkers and runners and race records have been set and broken. The seventh annual charity run/walk and pork dinner will be held the evening of Tuesday, June 19 at the Stratford Rotary Complex. This is a family fun event for runners of all ages.
