Knechtel, Thursday morning at his .residence in Kitchener, the Evangelical Church was bereft of a zealous member of the ministry of that denomination. Mr. Knechtel, who was 88 years of age, was born in Heidelberg on April 11, 11859. He •began his ministry in the Hay Township circuit in 1883, after graduation from North Western College, Naperville, Ill., .and at tile time of' his retirement he was minister of Olivet Evangelical Church, Kitchener, of which he was the founder. His summers were .usually spent at Grand Bend. The first sewing machine resulted ia a riot among em ployees of master tailors. There were only a few struggling newspapers, and only the beginning of a railway. Under such conditions and during a period of acute national instability, the Canada Life was born. Though many financial institutions failed in the great depression which followed, the Canada Life, founded on a sound and conservative basis, weathered the storm. It has pro gressed through 100 years of wars, epidemics and depressions. In the meantime life insurance has become the accepted means by which Canadians safe guard the security of their dependents.
