To the Editor:
Exeter Times-Advocate.
It is hardly the fair thing to say
that an increased tax rate is due
to increased school costs — taking
into consideration the school costs
for just the previous year. For sev
eral years previous to 1945 t'he
Board of Education asked yearly
for $13,000 from the ratepayers of
Exeter for school purposes—in the
days when we had only seven
teachers in the High School and
five teachers in the Public School.
Then came the much larger grants
-from the Department of Education,
and Exeter ratepayers were asked
over a period of three years for
about $12,000 less for school pur
poses — but there was no corres
ponding decrease in the total tax
rate. Last year school taxes, includ
ing the debenture of $>2,591.00,
were only $6,000. It could not be
expected that could last—less than
$3,500 to pay eighteen teachers and
other School costs. With five more
teachers and increased salaries the
school boards for this year are
asking for less from the ratepayers
than in 1944, that is $12,000. The
credit goes to the Department of
Education, Toronto — and, by the
way, they 'have not received much
credit up to the present time.
