Girl Softbailers Win Opener From Dashwood The girl softbailers got away to good start on the new diamond the Community Park last lursday night, by winning from ishwood 15-4. The booming bats of the locals llected a total of twenty hits off tellers D. Tetreau and S. Smith rile V. Lindenfield went the nine nings for Exeter and allowed but singles. The locals didn’t disappoint them either as they came out on the top side Of a 7"-4 score over Mitchell, Sweet went the route for Exeter and but for the sixth when he got into a little trouble and four runs were scored did a good job on the mound, allowing but seven hits. Catcher Smith, for Exeter, was the heavy slugger of the night collect­ ing four for four with three singles and a double. It wag the locals second win in three starts and while their hitting leaves something to be desired they are coming along in fine style on the fielding end, especially the younger players in the infield who are playing their first season in organized ball. Score All Runs in Sixth Mitchell had a big inning in the sixth sending all their four runs across the plate. Smith first up doubled and later scored on a wild pitch. Stock -and Gatenby drew walks and scored on two singles by Clarke and Brown. Then Deering got on on an error to load the bases. Sweet struck out Wilkinson ibut walked Sadler to .force in Clarke for the four runs to put them one behind the locals, Walthers was cut off at the plate on Smith’s easy ■grounder. The local nine scored in every inning but the fourth and in that inning they loaded the bases ,but all three runners were left strand­ ed. In the first inning three sin­ gles by Hayter, Fahner and Smith were responsible for two runs to put them into the lead, Hayter and Smith scoring. Dinney and Fahner scored in the second and third and Smith, Creech and ‘Smith again scored in the fifth, sixth and sev1- enth. Died In Saskatoon The death of Samuel Schroeder, aged 76 years, of 532 Avenue F, Saskatoon, occurred in hospital on June 4. The funeral service was held on Thursday, June 6, from Park Funeral Chapel, conducted by Rev. Gordon Schieck. Surviving are his widow, Selina, of Saskatoon: a son, Bertrand, of Calgary; three daughters, Mrs. Grant Murray, of Chatham, Ont,; Mm. Leslie Moore, of Winnipeg and Mrs. Cameron L. Baker, of Saskatoon; four broth­ ers, David, John and Charles, of this community and Jacob in Cali­ fornia; a sister, in Detroit, Mich. Jones, B.A., L.Th., who was recently ordained in St. Thomas, was one of the special speakers at the Church of the Ad­ vent anniversary services held at Ridgetown on Sunday. Mr. Jones is the son of Rev. Walter Jones, of London, and a formei’ Rector of Trivitt Memorial Church, Exeter. Rev. Derwyn Jones received his early education in Ridgetown. He will leave shortly for Winnipeg where he will be the assistant curate to Rev. T. J. Finlay, of Holy Trinity Church, Winnipeg, Mani­ toba. Rev. Harry L. Jennings, B.A., L.Tli., son of Mrs. Jennings, of town, was the special speaker at the evening service. Rev. Jennings, a former missionary in Northern Canada, is the rector of Morpeth, Trinity and Clearwater parish. The judge addressed the prison­ er: “Was any other person with you in this? Hemphill left for her home in Zurich this week prior to taking an extended trip to Western Canada, Severely Burned Mr, Charles Mdore, who operates a machine shop here received sev* er© burns on the side of his body and arm and suffered greatly from shock when a hew acetylene tank, which, was being set up, exploded. He was attended by Dr, J, C, God­ dard ana rushed to Scott Memorial Hospital, Seaforth. Communion Service j •Communion service was held in Carmel Presbyterian Church on Sunday morning conducted by Rev. P. A. Ferguson, when eight new members were received. Mrs. A. Scholl and Mrs. Kennedy sang a duett entitled, “In the Shadow of the Cross.” Mrs. Chas. Forrest pre­ sided at the organ in the absence of Mrs, Malcolm .Dougall. The eve­ ning service was withdrawn owing to St. Paul’s Anglican Church an­ niversary. Arnold Circle Meets The June meeting of the Arnold Circle Evening Auxiliary was held in the schoolroom of the church on Tuesday evening with Mrs. Melvin Moil’ presiding. The meeting opened by singing, “Lord of Light, Whose Name Outshineth,” after which Miss Helen Moir read the Scripture from Acts 17, verses 22- 81. Mrs. Kennedy led in prayer. Hymn, “Rise Up, O Men of God,” was sung. The roll call was answer­ ed with 20 members present. The business was discussed. The annual picnic will be held at the home of M’rs. Glenn Bell on Wednesday, July 17th. (Arrangements were made to hold a lawn tea at the home of Mrs. F. G. Bonthron on Thursday, June 20th, from 4 to 7 p.m. The topic on “Africa and Mary Slessor” was taken by Mrs. A. W. Kerslake. The meeting closed [by singing “Through the Night of Doubt and Sorrow,” and the Lord’s Prayer in unison. Reception and Dance A reception was held in the Hen­ sall Town Hall on Thursday eve­ ning in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Ed­ ward Little. Dancing was enjoyed to music by Murdoch’s orchestra.
