Sgm, Chester 0, Cornish, who was one of the first from Exeter to go overseas with the Canadian forces, arrived home Friday last, Chester enlisted with the infantry and after going overseas transferred to the Signal Corps. He was three and a half years in England before see ing action and the time of waiting, he says, was monotonous. He went With the forces to Sicily and was 'through the Italian campaign be fore returning to England to take part in the invasion of France. He served in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany before returning home. Chester says the Belgian people were glad to welcome the Canadians as liberators and used them exceptionally well. Another war veteran who return ed home Friday last was Tpr. Lee land dory who has been overseas i since November, 1941, Leeland was | a mechanic with a tank corps and followed closely behind the tanks in their maneouvres across France, Belgium and Holland and into Ger many. Leeland did not mention it but we have heard from other sources that the repair crews did heroic work in keeping the tanks on the move, making repairs when they broke down or were put out of commission. With the surrender of Germany the work for the tanks was completed. The trip home was made in five days and 'the boys were again glad to set foot on native soil. l and filling the kitchen with Mrs. Oke and daughter Reta Mr. and Mrs.* Lorne Oke and children were sitting in the when lightning STRUCK BY LIGHTNING During the heavy electrical storm that passed over this district Fri day evening of 'last week the home of Mrs. John Oke, second conces sion of Usborne Township, was struck by lightning, knocking down the chimney, ripping paper from the wall soot, and four kitchen chatting struck the house like a bomb shell. It toppled the 8-foot chimney, blew the lids off 'the kitchen stove and knocked dpwn .the. stove pipes,, fRfe. ing the room with soot, Margaret, a nine-months, old baby, was sit ting on its mother’s lap across the room but directly in front of the chimney. Her face was covered in soot. Some of the bricks from the chimney were blown to powder while others were scattered twenty feet on either side of the kitchen. Fortunately the lightning did not ^start a fire. Graduates Secure Positions Three additional graduates from •the commercial department of the Exeter high school have secured positions in London.
