Exeter Old Boy plans Trip
With The RCAF Bomber Group
In Britain
A Canadian Halifax Bomber be
came a high-speed bipod transport
recently when the North-East Reg
ional Blood Transfusion Officer
called upon the RCAF group in an
emergency to ferry bottled blood
to a main
flown direct
Europe.
Aircraft of

RCAF,
Canadian, a native of Exeter, Ont,
a graduate of the University of
Toronto, and formerly pathologist
at Hamilton, iOnt,
The Canadians didn’t hesitate,
and within a short time a van of
the Transfusion Service drove up to
an RCAF airfield and the priceless
blood was loaded into a Halifax,
and within a short time had reach-,
ed the central depot, A coincidence
is that most of the blood aboard
that plane came from Canadian
veins, donated by RCAF personnel
of the Beaver Base of the Group,
The Halifax was piloted by S/L
Ed Spence, of Sydney, N.S.
Dr, Stanbury paid tribute to
RCAF Bomber Group for its
operation in this vital matter.
The doctor has been head of
service since 19 39 and has seen the
RCAF at work before when a very
rare type of filter for blood plasma
was needed. It could not be bought
in England and the doctor cabled
to his almamater, the University of
Toronto. Within a few days they
had one ready and an aircraft of
the RCAF flew it to Britain. Cana
da has another interest in this
organization, for it was with money
subscribed in Canada that a plasma
separatoi’ was bought.
The fresh blood supplied by the
N.E.R.B.T. Service, is supplied by
Yorkshire men and women and
flown to our armies on the Contin
ent regularly. The blood, packed in
insulated boxes, is flown to a base
transfusion depot in Belguim
whence * it is distributed to hospit
als or casualty clearing stations or
is carried to tlie front lines in the
mobile refrigerators of the Field
Transfusion Units. This blood is in
addition to the supplies of plasma
and serum sent regularly.
In a recent case a bottle of blood
supplied by a young Leeds woman
was flown to the 'Continent one
morning and transfused that same
day into the veins of a 19-year old
soldier who had just become a
casualty.

You find he’s twenty-three.
