Mr, and Mrs. Lloyd Hudson, of St. Marys, were week-end visitors with relatives -here. Miss Eleanor Milley returned to Toronto after spending a week with Mr, and Mrs. W. B. Cross. Mr. and Mrs. Alf. Pfaff, of Zur­ ich, visited on Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Robert McKenzie, Mrs. Carter, of London, visited over the week-end with her par­ ents. Mr. and Mrs. Win. G. Bell, Mr. and „ Mrs. Ted Munn have rented the dwelling of Mrs. Lou Simpson and are getting nicely set­ tled. Miss Margaret Tudor, of Goderich spent the week-end at the home of her parents, Mr, and Mrs. Stanley Tudor. Mrs. Robert Moore, of Streets- ville, formerly of Aylmer, is spend­ ing a week with, Mr. and Mrs, W. B', Cross. Mr. and Mrs, 'Cowen, of Dungan­ non, visited on Sunday with their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Cowen. Mr. and Mrs. Liten Seirnon, of Kitchener, were week-end visitors with the latter’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Archie Noakes. Mr, Ray McArthur, formerly of Hensall, underwent an operation in Seaforth Hospital last week and is improving in health. Mr. and Mrs. Cline Flynn and Mrs. Wilfred Klopp, of London, .visited recently with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Parkins. Miss Norma Cook, of Western University, 'London, spent the week­ end at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs, N. E. !Cook. Miss Mona 'Hedden, of St. Cathar­ ines, is spending a week here ow­ ing to the illness of her mother, Mrs. Catharine Hedden. The many friends of Mrs. Robt. Middleton are pleased to hear she is convalescing following her recent operation in Clinton Hospital. Judge Costello, of Goderich, was in town o‘n Thursday hearing the assessment appeal of Edmund and Ira Geiger. Judgment withheld. Lieut. MacFarlane, of Newfound­ land, and Mrs. MacFarlane, of St. Thomas visited recently with the latter^ mother, Mrs. V. Schwalm. Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Clemas and family, of London, visited over the week-end -with Mrs. Celmas’ mother Mrs. Bolton and Mr. and Mrs. John Bolton. Mrs. Janet Peck and daughter, Elaine, of Toronto, visited here last Week, the former with Mrs. Harry Arnold and the latter the guest of Miss Mary Goodwin,. Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Hedden, of Hamilton, Mr. Herb Hedden and Miss Mona Hedden, of St. Cathar­ ines, visited over the week-end with their mother, Mrs. JCatharine ‘Hed­ den, who is ill. Mona is remaining for a couple of months with her mother. On Friday evening, Sept. 22nd, the Wohelo Class members are hold­ ing a weiner roast at Drysdale. This promises, to be an enjoyable event, AU former members of the class are urged to attend. Members and guests are asked to meet at Miss Ellis’ home at ,8 o’clock. Will those on the transporation committee see that there are enough cars available? In case of rain this af­ fair will be held in the Sunday School room. This year let us make a special effort to forward early the Christ­ mas boxes to the Hensall 'boys who are serving overseas. Donations for this fund are urgently needed,—in this way’ you will be making IChrist- mas happy for our lads. Local and rural citizens may leave their con­ tributions with Miss Gladys Luker, Pres, of the Institute, or with Dr, A. R. Campbell, president of the Wai’ Service Committee, not later than October 14th. As formerly do­ nations of sugar for the provision of candy will also be gratefully accepted. Anyone - desiring to pro­ vide cookies, or shortbread, or any other gifts for these boxes (50 in number) may advise Miss. G. Luker. Also, please remember to save all uound boxes suitable for candy and cookies; also local papers and maga­ zines. These may be left at the Town Hall. Arnold Circle Meets The September meeting of the Arnold ICircle was held at the home of Mrs. Qrr on Friday evening with Mrs. Geo. Moir co-hostess. The presi­ dent, Mrs. Melvin Moir, presided over the meeting which opened by singing, “What a Friend W% Have In Jesus,” after which Mrs. Roy Bell led in prayer. The Scripture, Ephesians 3:14-21, was read <by Mrs. Jack Farquhar, The hymn, “I Love to Tell the Story,” was sung and Mrs. Charles Forrest gave a reading entitled, “.In the Service of Health.” /Following the ‘business Mrs. Hilton Laing gave tbe topic on, “Early Years—Methods of Brit­ ish Guiana.” The meeting closed by singing, “Simply Trusting Every Day,” and the Lord’s Prayer in uni­ son. Refreshments were served by the hostess and co-hostess. o Library Board Meeting A meeting of the Public Library Board was held in the Council /Chamber at 8p.m. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and adopted. A communication from the president of the Huron County Lib­ rary Association was read thanking the Board for the kind invitation to hold the annual meeting here, and setting the date of October 16 for the same, also stating that Mr. Mowat, Inspectoi’ of the Public Lib­ raries would speak. Bride-Eleet Honored Miss Helen Moir and Mrs. Law­ rence Baynham were hostess on Monday evening for the Arnold Cir­ cle members in, honor of Miss Beryl Pfaff, bride-elect. During the even­ ing, chinese-checkers were played. The high prize was won by Mrs. Charles Forrest and consolation by Mrs. Orr. The bride was invited to a beautifully decorated chair, placed under a white wedding bell and presented with a table lamp. The presentation was made by Misa Violet Hyde and the following ad­ dress read by Miss Jean McQueefi. The annual Rally Day service will be held in the church on Sunday morning, Sept. 24th. Special music will be provided by a Sunday School Choir under the leadership of the superintendent, Mr. Cecil Skinner. Choir practice Friday evening of this week at 8 o’clock sharp. W.M.S* The September meeting of the W.M.S. was held in the schoolroom of the church on Tuesday evening of last week with a good attendance present. The programme was in charge of Mrs. F, Lewis and Mrs. Penwarden. Mrs. Wilbur Palmer, who recently returned from the East Coast, gave a very interesting talk on her trip and displayed some very beautiful shells that she had collected while there. During the evening two cloth quilts were tied and presented to Mrs. F. Howe. Several visiting ladies were present and assisted with this work. At the close of the meeting a very dainty lunch was served by Mrs. Hepburn assisted by Mrs. W. The Women’s Association of the United Church, held their regular meeting in the church on Thursday September 14th with the president. Mrs. Woodall, presiding. A. goodly number were present and plans were completed for the supper to be served in the church shed on Mon­ day, October 2nd. Mrs. iRapley, who is visiting here, favored the meeting with a well-rendered solo and Mrs, R. Hill gave a very interesting reading. At the close of the meeting. Mrs. E. Beaver and Mrs. J. Trevet­ hick served refreshments v Rally Day was observed in the United Church on Sunday. The scripture lessons were read by Evaleen Hill and Jean King, -while the stories were told by Mrs. Nel­ son Lamport and Ted Wright. Elaine Mitchell rendered a beautiful piano solo entitled,. “Golden Bells,” and a quartette was sung by Lois Schwartz, Betty Mawhinney, Edith Hill and Elaine Mitchell. The super­ intendent, Mi*. H. Mitchell, presid­ ed. KIPPEN A number from here attended the Anniversary services in Hillsgreen United church on Bunday and lis­ tend ed to two very inspiring ser­ mons, The guest speaker in the morning was Rev. Mr, Atkinsoti, of Brucefield, and in the evening, Rev, Keith Love, Padre at Clinton Air School and a former Hillsgreen boy. A large number of friends and neighbors of Mr, and Mrs. Ernie Whitehouse met in Hensall Town Hall in Friday evenihg to honor them after their recent marriage. The evening was spent In dancing to music furnished by the Murdoch Orchestra, About midhite Mr, atid Mrs, Whitehouse were ceiled to the platform and Mrs, Harry Caldwell read a nicely worded address atid they were presented with a beauti­ ful chesterfield bed* Mr. Whitehouse on behalf of Mrs, Whitehouse and himself, made a very fitting reply and all sahg “For They Are Jolly Good Fellows,” after Which lunch was served. ELIMVILLE 6 Mrs. M. Routly, of Woodham, visited in the village during the week-end. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Hern, of Goderich, visited one day recently with Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Johns and Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Johns. Mrs. Reg. McDonald, of Exeter, and Barbara were Sunday visitors with Mr. and Mrs. E, Skinner, Mr. Clayton Herdman of the R.C, A.F. stationed at iBagotville, Quebec is spending -a two week sick leave at hjs home here. Mrs. Wes. Horne visited last week with relatives at Warwick. Mr and Mrs. Wm. Routly and daugh­ ters visited there on. Sunday and Mrs. Horne returned home with them. Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Johns also Mr, and Mrs. Allen Johns attended the fair at Strathroy on Wednesday of last week. Mrs. Harry Ford is visiting her sister Miss Joy Whitlock in St, Thomas this week, -Next Sunday being Rally Day 'the church, services will be held combin­ ed in the ■ afternoon at 2 o’clock. There will be a special speaker pre­ sent for the occasion. Mr. and Mrs. Howard Johns were visitors with Dr. A. E. and Mrs. Johns in Hamilton the end of the week. KIRKTON Master Edward Byrne, of Detroit is holidaying with his uncle, Mr. Jas, Willis. Mrs, L, Funnel (nee Marion Tufts) and little son, Danny, of Stratford, spent the past week with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Truman Tufts, Mr. and Mrs. McDonald, of Wal­ laceburg called on friends in the village Saturday. Class Meets The September meeting of th© Class was held at the home of Mrs, Clarence Switzer, with 19 members and one visitor present, After the opening hymn the scripture lesson was read by Mrs, Thos. Near, Rev* Mrs, Goodger leading in prayer. Th© Class decided to hold another auc­ tion sale at the October meeting. Roll) call was answered by the kind of man I always thought I would marry. Miss Pearl Sweitzer gave a paper on Education. Gladys Swit­ zer favored with an instrumental. Mrs. E. Paton gave a reading. Mrs. Eric Humphreys closed with a quiz contest. Lunch was served by the hostess and committee.
