Miss Pearl Harpole, of London, spent the week-end with her mo­ ther, Mrs. Grace Harpole. Special Tranksgiving services will be observed in the local churches next Sunday. Pte. Robert MacLeod, of Camp llorden, visited over the week-end with his brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Roy MacLeod. The Women’s Guild of St. Paul’s Anglican Church are serving a Main Street Cafeteria Supper in the base­ ment of the church on Tuesday ev­ ening October 29th. Mr. Jack Dinsdale underwent an operation for appendicitis in Scott Memorial Hospital, Seaforth, last week and is very much improved at date of writing. Mrs. R. J. Moore will be hostess at her home Wednesday evening for the Hensall Senior Institute, when the roll call will be answered with an exchange of seeds and bulbs. Mi. W. H. Whyte of Seaforth will speak on agriculture. The W. M. S. of the United chuich hold their animal Thank-Offering Service on Sunday morning when Mrs. C. Murray, of Toronto, was the guest speaker, delivering a very inspiring address. Mrs. Hedden sang a solo and the choir sang an anthem with the soloist being Mis. Hedden. Mission Circle Meets The Mission Circle of the United church held their regular supper meeting at the home of Miss Mar­ garet Tudor on Friday evening, with twenty-three present. Miss Barbara Shepherd, presided ovei the devotional. Miss Margaret lt- dor read the Scripture. A letter of thanks was read from Miss Goldie Cross, who is attending Alma Col­ lege in St. Thomas. The topic en­ titled “Freedom” was given by Miss Irene Douglas. After hymns were sung. The November meeting will be held at the home of Miss Mary Clarke. Women’s Institute Cans Fruit for Red Cross Mrs. William Kyle was hostess for the Kippen East W. I. meeting with Mrs. Glenn MacLean presid­ ing. The meeting opened with a hymn followed by the Lord’s Prayer in unison. Plans were made for the society to entertain the Mission Circle Rally on Friday, October 18. Mrs. Cross and Mrs. Ballantyne, who were on the visiting commit­ tee for September reported having made thirteen calls. Miss Annie Consitt was chosen as delegate to attend the convention to be held in Roys church on Thursday, Oc­ tober 10th. Mrs. A. Spencer pre­ sided over the remainder of the meeting. The Scripture was read by Mrs. J. Walker, and Mrs. Lara­ mie led in prayer. After singing a hymn Miss Annie Consitt gave a reading. The topic “Moving Mil­ lions” was very a,bly given by Mrs. A. W. E. Hemphill and a solo was rendered by Mrs. Hedden ac­ companied by Miss Irene Douglas at the piano. The meeting was closed by singing a hymn and the National Anthem. Hensall Resident Passes Suddenly The death occurred on Friday of Mrs. James Priest in her 80th year at her home here. The deceas­ ed had been caring for her hus­ band, who has been seriously ill for several weeks and appeared in usual good health, until Friday morning when stricken with a heart attack and succumbed at I noon. Formerly Mary Jane Morris­ on, a daughter of the late William Morrison and Ann Price Morrison. The deceased was born in McKillop near Walton, coming to Hensall thirty-six years ago. Surviving are her husband, one son Morrison at home; one daughter Mrs. Alpine McEwen (Nellie), of Hensall and one son James in Port Huron; one sister Mrs. Ellen Cranston, Van­ couver B.C. and one brother Mr. Robert Morrison, of Woodstock. A public funeral service was held from the late home on Monday af­ ternoon conducted by the rector of St. Paul’s Anglican church, Rev. M. A. Hunt. The members of the Anglican church choir sang “Nearer My God To Thee” and “Safe tn the Arms of Jesus.” The floral tributes were very beautiful showing the esteem with which the deceased was •held. The pallbearers were Mr. Robert Morrison, Woodstock; Mr. Morrison, McKillop; Mr. Alpine Mc- I Ewen, Mr. Jas. A. Patterson and Norris and Alpine McEwen Jr. In­ terment: in Elmdale cemetery at Atwood. War Service Committee Meets The Hensall. Zurich and Kippen War Service Committee met in the Town Hall here on Friday evening with the president Dr, A. R. Camp­ bell in the chair. Mr. B. W. Cross treasurer, reported the proceeds of the frolic. It was moved by Rev. E. F. Chandler and seconded by Mr. W. O. Goodwin that fifty dollars be donated to Hensall Red Cross Society and fifty dollars to Zurich Red Cross Society. Mr. E. L. Mickle, chairman ol' the War Sav­ ings Committee gave a report. A vote of thanks was extended to the Legion for their raising of funds for the Red Cross. Mr. H. T. Edwards, of the Children’s Shelter, •Goderich, explained guest children from England. Mr. Ross MacKay discussed boxes for sending to the soldiers overseas. Cigarettes will be sent to the boys this month. A discussion of the financing of the 'Sky Harbor, Elementary Training Siliool at Goderich. The meeting adjourned. Ohipcliase and Stewart Wright, that the parcels sent them from the 'Hensall, Kippen and Zurich War Service Committee arrived in num­ ber one condition and expressed thejr thanks for same. Council Minutes The regular meeting of the vil­ lage council was held on Monday evening at 8 p.m. in the Council Chamber with all members being­ present except Councillor D. Rob­ inson. Minutes of the previous meeting were read. Moir and Horton that the min­ utes be adopted as read. Carried. T, Kyle reported re the water trouble at the rear of H. M. Mc­ Millan’s store; also that there was ■water in the furnace room in the hall, and that there was need of a new flag. Reeve Shaddick reported re the gifts for soldiers. S. met on Wednesday afternoon of last week at the home of Mrs. Fred Pattison with the 1st Vice-President, Miss Ethel Wilson presiding. There were 17 members and four visitors present. The meeting opened with quiet music on the piano by Mrs. Delmar John­ son. The worship service was tak­ en from the Thanksgiving leaflet and conducted by Miss Ethel V, ilson and some of the members of the group. After the offering was taken all stood and sang the Doxology. The roll was called and business was dealt with for a short while af­ ter which Mrs. Jas. Squire took charge o-f the program. One verse of 311 in the Hymnary was sung and the Scripture lesson was read by Mrs. Pattison. Miss Ethel Wilson favored with a piano solo and the Study Book chapter “Comrades in the World Church” written by Mrs. (Rev.) Laing and read by Mrs. J. ■Squire, Mrs. Lawrence Copeland, Miss Louise Hackney, Mrs. Wm. Mills, Mrs. Delmar Johnson and Mrs. Frank McNaughton, Mrs. Ben Wilson gave a temperance reading; Mrs. Frank McNaughton gave a short talk on Christian Stewardship The remainder of hymn 311 was sung and the benediction pronounc­ ed. Lunch was served by the hos­ tess and a social time was spent to­ gether. There were no church services held here on Sunday last owing to Anniversary services being held at Zion Church on the Mitchell Road. Rev. A. Laing spent Friday last in Toronto. Mrs. Raymond Switzer and little daughter of Brantford are at pres­ ent holidaying at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Whitefield Switzer. Our W. M. The president, Mrs. England presided. The meeting opened with the National Anthem, Ode and repeating the Lord’s Pray­ er in unison. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and adopted, and the roll call answered by naming a Canadian-made pro­ duct. The Institute is having a short course from October 14 to October 18 inclusive on craft, and it is hoped that interested, will make use opportunity to learn new and many interesting facts about needle wbrk. Miss Lillian Howell is conducting this course. The mem­ bers of the Institute have been in­ vited to Zurich to meet with the Institute there, on November 4th. All member are requested to go. It was decided to send 15 jars of jam to the Children's Memorial Hospital in London. Mrs. Lawrence Wein took the chair for the follow­ ing program: Song, paper by Mrs. Kestle on “Home Beautification”; duet by Verna Wein and Aldonna Wuerth “We’re Marching for De­ mocracy.” A paper on “Perennials” by Mrs. Wes. Owing to the absence of the president, Mrs. Ferguson was in charge of the' meeting. Mrs. Rhode and Mrs. Ferguson gave the Scripture lesson with alternate verses of the hymn “Breathe on Me Breath of God” followed by the roll call and business discussion It was decided to have Thank- Offering with Miss Sparling, on furlough from China, as speaker at the Sunday morning service to be arranged early in November. Mrs. Wiseman gave the topic “James Evans’ Life.” Jane Morgan sang a solo; Grant Morgan an instrumental and a vocal solo to his own ac­ companiment. Mrs. Parker closed the meeting with prayer followed by the Lord’s Prayer in ifnison. Lunch was served by the tea com­ mittee. Mrs. Gunning, of Exeter, spent a few days with her daughter.
