The School Concert will be held in the Town Hall, Hensall, Thurs­ day evening September 26th all the rural schools will participate. Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Case and Mr. and Mrs. G. M. Case attended the funeral of their uncle the' late Mr. Peter Case in Exeter on Friday. The young people of Carmel Pres­ byterian church held a successful weiner roast at the home of Miss Jean McQueen on Friday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Stewart Gunn, Mrs. C. W. Nichols, and Mrs. Margaret Scott, of London, and Mrs. Harry Wilson, of Winnipeg, Man., visited on Monday with Miss Hattie Suth­ erland. Mr. and Mrs. Robt. Higgins and Mrs. A. Bowen, of Exeter and Mrs. A. J. Sweitzer, Lois and Ralph, of Beach O’ Pines visited on Sunday' with Mr. and Mrs. Ed. McQueen. Mr. Robert Passmore conducted services in the United Church on Sunday. Mr. Carey Joynt sang a solo and Mr. W. O. Goodwin favor­ ed with a solo at the evening ser­ vice. 'Mr. and Mrs. Callas, of Los An­ geles, Calif., visited this week with the latter’s mother Mrs. J. Dins- dale and sister Mrs. Elda Simmons. Mrs. Callas is remaining for a few weeks. Mrs. Geo. Walker had the mis­ fortune to fall and hurt her back while moving furniture in the dwell­ ing they recently moved into. She has been confined to her room for the past week. Mr. Burton Keyes, of Parkham, visited on Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Harold Parker and Mr. and Mrs. Enoch Parker. Mr. and Mrs. E. Parker accompanied him home where they spent some time. Next Sunday morning Rally Day service will be held in Carmel Pres­ byterian church and the Sabbath School scholars are requested to meet at 10.30 a.m. Special service of song will be held at the evening service. Mr. Robert Passmore left on Monday after spending the summer months at his home here, for Tor­ onto where he enters honor year in modern history. This is Bob’s fourth year and his graduating year and upon completion intends to study theology. The Ladies’ Aid of Carmel church held their regular meeting on Tues­ day evening. The ladies’ group from Brueefield presented a humorous program in the form of an Old- fashioned sketch. Mrs. John E. Mc­ Ewen’s and Mrs. John Stewart’s groups will be responsible for the next program. The death occurred at 967 Has­ kett street, London, oh Thursday of Miss Maisie Coleman in her 17th year after a lengthy illness. The. deceased was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. Coleman, Mr. Cole- Hensall. Attending the funeral on Saturday was Miss Annie E. Con- sitt and Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Cole­ man. The sympathy of the com­ munity is extended to the bereaved family. Harvest Home Services were held in Carmel Presbyterian church last Sunday. The church was decorated with flowers, fruits and vegetables. Rev. Wm. Weir preached special sermons. The choir sang two an­ thems “Bing To the Lord of the Harvest’’ and “A Song of Praise.” A ladies’ quartette comprising Miss-t es Irene Hoggarth, Lois and Mar­ ion MacLaren and Margaret Dougall conributed a suitable selection. Complimenting Miss Jean Ven- iwr, whose niarricige took place this week about one hundred relatives and friends gathered at her home and presented her with a miscellan­ eous shower. The gifts were pre­ sented to the bride in a • decorative basket. iMrs. Alex McBeath favour­ ed with a humorous reading. The bride’s trousseau, linens, quilts, sil­ verware and dishes were displayed. The bride was the recipient of many beautiful and useful gifts and made a reply thanking the don­ ors. Refreshments were served. An Appeal for Magazines An appeal for magazines for dis­ tribution among Canadian forces at home and overseas is being made by the Canadian Legion War Ser­ vices. Legion supervisors in all mili­ tary canyps throughout the Domin­ ion as well as those in Great Bri­ tain, report a dearth of this type of reading matter. They point out that national magazines of all kinds especially those well illustrated, are greatly enjoyed by the men after their long hours of intensive train­ ing. Troops in England are par­ ticularly interested in Canadian periodicals because it helps them to keep in touch with their home at­ tachments. All possible assistance from the public is urged by the Legion which announces that magazines may foe turned over to the Legion branch for packing and shipment to C.L.W.S. headquarters at Ottawa. Magazines not more than two months old are preferred. French language periodicals will also be appreciated for distribution to the French-Cnadian trooips at home or abroad. Exeter W. I.
