Miss Irene Douglas, who under­ went ait operation in Scott Memor­ ial Hospital, Seaforth, on Friday, is doing as well as can be expected. Mr. and Mrs. Ross MacLean, Don- elda and Jack, of Detroit, are visit­ ing with Mrs. McLean’s mother, Mrs. Jackson and members of the family. Mr, and Mrs. Brinkholt and son Harold, of Kitchener, spent the week-end with Mrs. Brinkholt’s par­ ents, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Ortwein. Mr. and Mrs. John C. Bell and Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Chipchase, of Kippen, visited with Rev. and Mrs. J. Richardson on Sunday last, Mr. and Mrs. Alonzo ortwein, of Detroit, spent the week-end with the former’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. AV. Ortwein and members of the family. Mr. Kenneth Manns returned to his duties at the T. Eaton’s Co., Toronto after spending the past two weeks with his mother Mrs. Fred Manns. Mr. and Mrs. Ford Sparks and Mrs. Hiscock and daughter, Lon­ don, visited on Monday with the former’s mother, Mrs. Marjorie Sparks. Mr. and Mrs. Neil Sparks, of De­ troit, and Mr. Leonard Sparks, oi the west spent the week-end with their father, Mr, Alex Sparks, who is ill. A Refugee Tea was held in the Red Cross work rooms in the Town Hall on Saturday evening which re­ ceived a wonderful response. Re­ freshments were served. Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius Cook and Mr. and Mrs. Harry Cook, Tor­ onto, returned home after a very pleasant visit with their daughter, Mrs. D. Chelew, of Los Angeles, Calif. Mr, Robert Drysdale and Mr. and Mrs. Forbes, of Sandusky, Mich., visited on Sunday with the former’s brother, Mr. and Mrs. G. M. Drys­ dale and Mr. and Mrs. AV- A. Mac- Laren. Mrs. H. Connley and daughter, Mrs. Donald Ferguson and children Georeen and Donald, of Winnipeg, are visiting with the former’s bro­ ther and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. John McEwen. Mrs. Robt. Lohr, Mrs. Donald Thomas and son Donald, of Altuna, Penn., are visiting with Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Ortwein, Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Patterson and Mr. and Mrs. G. M. Drysdale. Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Priest, of Port Huron, spent Sunday with the form­ er’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Priest, Miss Mina McEwen accom­ panied them home after a very pleasant visit. Miss Margaret Kilpatrick, of Strathroy, who has been assistant teacher at the Continuation School here for the past few years has re­ signed her position and has been en­ gaged at the Continuation School in Wyoming. Rev. Wm. Weir conducted ser­ vices in Carmel Church on Sunday. The choir sang two beautiflul an­ thems with Rev. Mr. Weir, soloist. Service will be held in the evening only during the month of July, as Rev. Mr. Weir will conduct service in Caven Church, Exeter, in the morning. Rev. John Richardson preached a very fine sermon in the United church on Sunday morning. In the evening Rev. Mr. Brook spoke on the subject “'Christianity on the March”. The choir sang two an­ thems. Rev, Mr. and Mrs. John Richard­ son, who have been residents of the village for the past few years, will be greatly missed by their friends. Rev. Mr. Richardson has received a call to the ministry of the United Church in Thamesville and expects to move in the near fuutre. Marathon Bridge Entertained The members of the Marathon Bridge Club were very pleasantly entertained at the home of Mrs. G. M. Drysdale on Friday evening. The Club’s proceeds go to the Red Cross Society and up to date they have made a handsome donation. Ortwein Family Reunion The Ortwein family reunion was held on Monday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. AV. Ortwein, with twenty two present. Those who attended were Mrs. R. Lahr, Johnstown, Pa., and daughter, Mrs. D. Thomas and son, of Altuna, Pa., Mr. and Mrs Alonzo Ortwein, Detroit; Mr. and Mrs. Brinkholt and son Harold, of Kitchener; Messrs. Milton and Lloyd Ortwein, Miss Vera McVicar and Miss Mararet Billings, London; Mr. and Mrs. G. M. Drysdale and fam­ ily and Mr. and Mrs. Jas. A. Patter­ son, Hensail. liride and Groom Honored With Reception The Town Hall was filled to cap­ acity on Friday evening when a wedding reception was held in hon­ or of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Munn. During the evening the bride and groom were presented with a beauti­ ful Chesterfield suite. The address was read by Mr. Jim McEwen. The groom made a very suitable reply. All joined in singing “For They are Jolly Good Fellows”. Dancing was enjoyed to the strains of Murdock’s orchestra and Mr. Wm, Hay ter was floor manager. Plunkett Dinner Served A Plunkett Dinner was served in Carmel church on Thursday even­ ing to about one hundred and sixty, sponsored by the Canada Bread Co. Organize War Time Citizens’ Committee The Hensail War Time Committee was organized Tuesday evening at the Town Hall. The meeting was well-attended. The speakers wero Mr. J. Thomas, of Goderich and Mr. R. E. Pooley, of Winclielsea. Rev. Weir and Rev. Brook also spoke. Officers were elected as follows: President, Dr. A, R. Campbell; vice- presidents, Dr. Bryce, Zurich; Sam. Dougall, Rev. E. F. Chandler; sec­ retary, Walter Spencer; treasurer, W. B. Cross; executive, Reeve Shad­ dick, Rev. Brook, Miss Beryl Pfaff. Mrs. Glen McLean, Mrs. Thos. Moir, Zurich; Leroy O’Brien, Zurich; A. Kalbfleisch and Dr. R. J. O’Dwyer. A number of resolutions were passed and" the meeting closed with the National Anthem. Mitchell Family Reunion „ The Mitchell family reunion was held on Saturday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Alex Crerar with fifty at­ tending from Toronto, St. Cather­ ines, Mt. Elgin, Listowel, Wingham, Ingersoll, Milverton and Mt. Forest. The sports were directed by Mrs. Cooper, of Mt. Elgin. Baseball games were played. An impromptu program concluded the afternoon. Refreshments were served in the house, the tables being beautifully decorated with peonies and sum­ mer flowers. The following officers were elected; President, Mr, John Campbell, Listowel; secretary-treas­ urer, Miss Mabel Campbell, Listo­ wel. Convenor, sports, Stewart Crerar, Hensail; convenor, program C. Krug, Ohesley. The reunion next year is to be held in Chesley. McCJinchcy - MacGregor A pretty wedding was solemnized on Saturday at 5 p.m. at the United Church Manse, Egmondville, when Rev. Mr. Gardiner, united in mar­ riage Anna Kathleen, youngest dau­ ghter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm, Mac­ Gregor, of Kippen and Edward James, son of Mrs. Sarah McClin- chey and the late Mr. James Mc- Clinchey, of Hensail. The bride looked charming in a floorlength gown of pink silk net over satin picture hat of white fibre lace, white gloves and shoes and carried a shower bouquet of orange blossoms Mrs. Manley Jinks, of Hensail, sis­ ter of the groom, was bridesmaid. She wore a streetlentil dress of pale blue crepe, with white accessories and carried a bouquet of orange blossom. Mr. Manley Jinks was the groomsman. Following the cere­ mony a wedding dinner was served at the bride’s home. The table was decorated with pink and white streamers, rosebuds and peonies and centred with the bride’s cake. Later the young couple left on a honey­ moon trip to Niagara Falls and Tor­ onto. The bride donned a dubbon­ net ensemble with white accessories for travelling. On their return they will reside in Hensail. WHALEN Mrs. Earl Johnson spent Monday with Mrs. J. Cann, Thames Road. Mr. and Mrs. Caleb Millson, of London, were recent visitors of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Millson. Mr. and Mrs. Howard Morley re­ turned to their home at Royal Oak, Mich., on Friday after spending a few days with the former’s parents. Miss Elsie Robbins, of Granton, spent the holiday with Mrs. Frank Gunning. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Kerr, of Toronto, spent the holiday with Mn and Mrs. Alex Baillie and Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Naughton and family, oil Toronto with Mr. and Mrs. J. Mor- kin. Mr. Grafton Squire and Mr, Bob Lindsay, of Cherry Grove were in Buffalo on Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Hazelwood, Mr. Wil­ son Morley, Mr. and Mrs. G. Squire and Mr. and Mrs. F. Squire attend­ ed the Granton Anniversary on Sun­ day and spent the day with friends. Mr. Geo. Gunning, of Brandon, is visiting with his brother, Mr. F. Gunning. The ladies of the community held a quilting at the church on Tuesday afternoon to quilt three quilts for the refugees. Mrs. Rober Moeller, Mrs. Gerald­ ine Meyers, of Detroit, Mich., spent last Thursday with Mr. and Mrs. AV. Morley. HURONDALE W. I. The June meeting of the i-Iuron- dale Women’s Institute met at the home of Mrs. Alvin Moir. Plans for the annual picnic for the mem­ bers and their families were com­ pleted and will be held at Grand Bend on July 4th. Mrs. Ben Case, chairman of historical research pre­ sided over the program. Roll call was answered by naming a Canadian bird. Mrs. Alvin Moir gave a re­ port of the District Annual. Miss L. M. jeckell, of Exeter, gave a very interesting topic on the history of clocks. A. chapter from the book entitled “Autobiography of a Woman Sky Pilot,” written by Dr. Margaret Strang Savage, a former member of the Hurondale Women’s Institute, was read by Mrs. Moir. Mrs. Kirk­ land and Mrs. McQueen were chosen as local leaders to attend the course of (Preservation of fruit to be held at Hensail. The Red Cross secre­ tary, Mrs. R. Kestle, gave a very fine report on the work the ladies are doing and also distributed more yarn and sewing. It was decided to hold a. pie and ice cream social at Hurondale school house on July 19th under the auspices of the Red Cross. The Misses Audrey and La- belle Sims sang a delightful duet. Weiburg Mrs. Elizabeth AVeiburg died at .her home on the townline Tuesday afternoon, July 2nd following an illness of about five months. She was in her 81st year and was a member of the Lutheran Church. Her husband predeceased her seven years ago. She is survived by three •sons Fred, of Stephen Township; Henry, of Hay Township; Charles^ Hay Township and one daughter, Mrs. Jacob Fischer, of Dashwood; also three sons by a former mar­ riage, Jacob Kavelman, of Hydro, Montana and AVilliam and Fred Ka­ velman, of Kitchener. The funeral will be held on Friday afternoon from the home and to the Lutheran church at 2.30 o’clock. Interment will be in the Bronson Line Luther­ an cemetery with Rev. T. Luft of­ ficiating. Lutheran League Due to the absence of Rev. T. Luft only a short meeting was held in which a number of business matters were discussed. Lawrence Schwartz were joint hostesses to a social evening enjoyed by the members of the Unit­ ed Church Choir. The early part of the evening was devoted to the usual weekly practice after which a com­ plimentary address was read to the pianist, Mrs. A. Hodgins (nee Greta Pollard.) Mr. Howard Lightfoot on behalf of the choir, presented the guest of honour with a walnut end- table. Although taken by surprise Airs. Hodgins, made a fitting reply. A hearty vote of thanks to the host­ esses, on motion of Mrs. J. AVoodall and Miss Mary Chambers, was unan­ imously responded to. Airs. In all this bale was valued at $190.00 and the Red Cross Society here donated $45.00 for blankets.
