Mrs. Walks returned home Sunday after spending the past few weeks at St. Marys. Mrs. F. Weir, of Goderich, visited on Sunday at the home of her son Rev. Wm. Weir. Mr. Percy Joynt,. of Detroit, was the guest of his brother, Mr T. C. Joynt, last week. Mr. and Mrs. Neil Sparks, of De­ troit, visited with relatives here over the week-end. Mrs. Kate Cantelon and Mrs. Parl- nier left this week for a two weeks’ holiday at Pike Bay. Quite a number from here at­ tended the ^Stephenson picnic held at Bayfield on Saturday. Miss Marie iBell, of London, spent the week-end with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. G. Bell. Miss Hattie Sutherland returned home after a pleasant visit with Miss Murray in London. Mr. and Mrs. Elgin Hayter and babe, of London, visited last week with Mr. and Mrs. R. D. Bell. Mr. and Mrs. Alexander Smillie, of Toronto, are visiting at the home of their son, Dr. I. G. Smillie. Miss Mavis Spencer, of Toronto, spent the week-end with her par­ ents, Mr. and Mrs. A. Spencer. Miss Helen Munn R.N., London, visited on Saturday with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Robert Munn. Mrs. Art Prior accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Verne Hedden spent the week-end in Niagara Falls. Rev. J. Weatherburn, of Brandon, Man., was the guest of Rev. and Mrs. Wm Weir over the week-end Mr. Rae Patterson, of Toronto, visited over the weekend with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Patter­ son. Miss Jean Bonthron, of London, vsited at the home of her parents Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Bonthron on Saturday. The W. Mr. Harold Bonthron, who has been spending the past few weeks in Toronto returned to his home here last week, Mr. and Mrs. Ted Taman, Listowel, spent the week-end with the latter’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Lawrence underwent . a serious operation in Clinton Hospit­ al last week. Her many friends hope for a speedy recovery. Mrs. John Passmore who has been seriously ill in St. Joseph’s hospital, London, continues to be in a serious condition at date of writing. Mrs. J. W. .Bonthron returned home last week after spending a couple of weeks with .her mother, Mrs Yungblut in Kitchener, who has been ill.Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Hudson, of St. Marys, visited on Saturday with the former’s father Mr. Thos. Hud­ son, who met with a painful acci­ dent on Friday. In answer to the demand for woollen blankets the Red Cross have received fifty-four blankets and two quilts up to date, Which is a splen­ did showing for a village. Rev. R. A. Brook conducted an­ niversary services in Roy’s United church on .Sunday morning and anni­ versary service in Hillsgreen United church in the evening. Mr. Kay, of Clinton, has complet­ ed the redecorating of the Sunday School room and adjoining rooms of Carmel Presbyterian church which present a very fine appearance. The Ladies’ Association Of Carmel church held a very pleasant social evening and tea at the manse on Friday evening when the town group who won the “Copper Contest” were entertained by the losers. Rev. W- Mair, of Thames Road; conducted the service in the United church on Sunday morning and the choir sang. The evening service was withdrawn for the Young People’s Anniversary at Cliiselhurst United Church. Rey. J. Weatherburn, of Brandon, Man., who is attending the General Assembly at St. Catharines preach­ ed in Carmel Presbyterian church on Sunday morning and the choir sang an anthem. Rev, Wm. Weir conducted the evening service and the choir sang a very beautiful anthein. Mr. Robt. Passmore student of Di­ vinity College, Toronto, sou of Mr. and Mrs. John Passmore, Hensail, conducted Young people’s anniver­ sary service in the United church at Chiselhurst on Sunday morning. Rev. E. F. Chandler, of Kippen, con­ ducted the service in the evening and a young ladies’ quartette of the Hensall United Church comprising Misses Shirley Fairburn, Mary Good, win, Ruth Brook and Goldie Cross sang “Thanks Be To God.” Miss G, Lammie accompanied at the piano. Meets With Painful Accident Mr. Thos. Hudson, who has been employed for a number of years al the elevators of Mr. Geo. T, Mickle & Sons here, met with a painful ac­ cident on Friday when he stepped on a loose board which he thought to be nailed. Mr. Hudson was very severely hurt but is improving grad­ ually. He was attended by Dr, D. G. ■Steer. Mission Circle The Mission Circle met at the home of Miss Elva McQueen on Friday evening. Following the supper the meeting opened with singing a hymn The motto “I Would Be True” fol­ lowed. The Scripture was read by Miss Elva McQueen and Miss Gladys McKenzie led in prayer. Miss Kay Drysdale gave the Missionary story. The topic : :The Little Bride” was given by Miss Irene Douglas. The meeting closed by singing a hymn. Wolielo Class Meets The regular meeting of the Wo- helo class was held in the Sunday School of the United church on Fri­ day evening with Mrs. Lome Chap­ man presiding and Miss Kay Drys­ dale as convenor. Miss Norma Cook played a piano solo and Miss Elva McQueen gave an interesting read­ ing. Miss Gladys McKenzie gave the opening prayer. Miss Gladys Luker read the Scripture. The business was discussed and each member is to give a donation to buy blankets for the Red Cross Society. The annual picnic is to be held at Bayfield on ■Friday, June 21st with the following committee appointed. Lunch, Misses Gladys Luker, Gladys McKenzie, Ed­ na Saundercock and Mrs. Hedden. Sports, Miss Hazel Smillie, Mr. Robt. Passmore and Mr. Edison Forest. A number of hymns were sung. W. M. S. Meets The regular meeting of the W. M. £. of the United Church was held on Thursday afternoon with Mrs. Cross presiding. After singing the: opening hymn the Lord’s prayer was repeated in unison. The minutes were read and adopted, Mrs. J. El­ der reported having shipped a bale worth $8 0.00. The business was dis­ cussed and it was decided to hold a Baking Sale on Saturday, June 15th. Mrs E. L. Mickle, Mrs. N. E. Cook and Mrs. Geo. Hess were the com­ mittee appointed to make arrange­ ments for same. Mrs. Chas. McDonell presided over the remainder of the program and read the Scripture. Mrs. Lee Hedden and Mrs. George Hess sang a lovely duet accompanied at the piano by Miss Irene Douglas. Mrs. E. L. Mickle very ably gave the topic on “The Christian Church in India” taken from the Study Book “Moving Millions.” The meeting was closed -with the benediction. Andcrson-RuinWe A very pretty wedding was sol­ emnized at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Rumble, Clinton, on Sat­ urday, June Sth, at 2 p.m. when their daughter Helen Elizabeth was united in marriage to John Arthur, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Ander­ son, of near Hensall. Rev. G. Bur- ton, officiated. The ceremony was performed in the living room in an evergreen arch trimmed with bridal wreath. The bride, given in mar­ riage by her father, looked charming in a floor-length gown of white marquiset with a finger tip veil caught at the back with gardenias. She carried a bouquet of Premeo Supreme Roses. Mr. Sam Rennie, of Hensall, played the wedding music. Mrs. Sam Rennie, sister of the bride, was matron of honor and wore a floor length gown of tur­ quoise georgette with full skirt and tight pleated jacket and carried a bouquet of pink carnations. Mr., Edison MacLean, of Kippen was best man. During -the signing the register Mr. Sam Rennie sang “At Dawning.” Following the ceremony a buffet luncheon from a table centred with the bride’s cake was served to about thirty guests by Mrs. Geo. Rum-ble and Miss Frances Anderson. Mrs. Rumble received in black sheer with corsage of car­ nations. The young couple left on a honeymoon trip to Northern On­ tario. The bride travelled in a queen’s blue gown, navy coat with white trim and navy accessories. MunnJDrover The United Church parsonage at Hensall was the scene of a pretty June wedding at high noon, Satur­ day! when Beatrice Ada Etheleen Drover, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Drover, of Hibbert, was united in marriage to John Clifford Munn, soli of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Munn, of Hay. Rev. R. A, Brook performed the ceremony. The bride was becomingly dressed in a floor length gown of turquoise blue net with jacket of imported lace, large blue hat and pink acces­ sories and carried a bouquet of Briercliff roses and lily-of-the-valley. She was attended by Miss Dorothy Munn, sister of the groom, Who tvore a floor length gown of pink' printed organza and pink hat with White accessories and carried a bouquet of Johanna. I-Iill roses. Mr. Earl Drover, of London, brother of the bride, acted aS groomsman, Following the ceremony a wedding reception Was held at the bride’s home. Mrs. Drover received in navy sheer with a corsage of roses and Mrs. Munn received in a rose ensemble with a corsage of roses. Tufts and Mrs. Truman Tufts were guests at the afternoon tea held at Stratford General Hos­ pital on Wednesday afternoon when the class of girls who received their caps and capes this past Saturday entertained along with the graduat­ ing class of 1940. Gollings is confined to her bed. We hope for a speedy recov­ ery. S. and Mission Circle The meeting was held at the home of Mrs. Selves with a large attend­ ance, The opening hymn was 3 83 and tile theme for June centred on the “Personality of Prayer,” Scrip­ ture readings were given by Mrs. Ferguson, Mrs. Mair, Mrs. Hunkin and Miss Hackney. The minutes of the last meeting were read and the roll called. It was decided to have a 10c. tea at the next meeting for ■the Mission Band. A report of the resolution committee at the London Conference was read by Mrs. Fergus­ on. Mrs. Robt. Cann took charge of the program. Hymn 172 was sung. Miss Helen Selves gave a reading, “A Little Woman of Prayer”, Mrs. Aimer Stewart then favored with a piano solo “Excelsior.” Mrs. Mair gave a reading from the Temperance Advocate entitled “Our Mistakes.” Mrs. John Hodgert sang “When Roses Bloom.” Mrs. Dawson then gave the topic on “Higher Education in India.” Hymn 662 was sung. Mrs P. Passmore read a prayer for clos­ ing and the Lord’s Prayer was re­ peated in unison. ELIMVILLE Mr. and Mrs. Louis Johns and family were Sunday visitors with Mr. and Mrs. Melville Hern at Zion and attended the anniversary ser­ vices there. There will be no preaching ser­ vice in this church next Sunday it being Thames Road Anniversary. Visitors at the home of Mr. Wm. Ivison and Jean. I The W. M. S. of St. Andrew’s United church met at the home of Mas. John Cochrane on Wednesday afternoon June 5th for their June meeting and were joined by the Hillsgreen Ladies, Tile meeting was presided over by Mrs. I-I. McMurtrie and opened with hymn 383. The Scripture reading were taken by Mrs. Meilis and Mrs. Chipchase and the Lord’s Prayer was repeated in unison. Hymn 172 was then sung and Mrs. Forsyth led in prayer. The offering and Roll Call were taken and during tile business discussion it was decided io hold the Baby Band meeting next month and to have Mrs. C. W. Christie of Exeter address the ladies. It was also de­ cided to hold a Strawberry Festival. Mrs. Chandler gave the topic and the meeting closed with hymn 252 and the Mizpah benediction in unis­ on. Lunch was served by Circle No CREDITON A Strawberry Social will be held in the Evangelical church Friday June 21st. Mr. and Mrs. O. C. Grismore and daughter, Drue, of Steubenville, Ohio, visited a few days last week with the former’s sister, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Morlock. A missionary program was given in the United church Sunday School last Sunday consisting of a mission­ ary reading by Mrs. W. "Wright and Miss Mary Chambers’ class sang “Bring Them In.” The annual Sunday School picnic of the United church will be held at Grand Bend on Saturday, June 22nd. All the congregation are cordially invited to attend. Mr. T. Trevethick and Mr. G. Mawhinney comprise the ways and means committee. Bring picnic baskets. Mr. and Mrs. Russell Clark and son Glenn, of Detroit, are spending two weeks with the former’s parents Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Clark. Mr. Harold Wolfe, who has been employed for a number of years with Mr. Hugo Schenk left Sunday for Stratford where he has accept­ ed a position with the Whyte Pack­ ing Company. His many friends wish him every success. Mr. Ezra Oestricher and Miss Matilda Oestricher, of Windsor spent a few days in the community. Messrs. A feature of the last Sunday morning service of the Evangelical church was the baptism of Donald LeRoy Hendrick, son of Mr, and Mrs. Ed. Hendrick; Douglas James Laurence Wein, son of Mr. and Mrs. Laurence Wein; Donald Roy Hirtzel and William Rofes Hirtzel, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Hirtzel. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Boyce and daughter Ellen, of Brucefield, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Peck, Billy and Joyce, of Bayfield, Mr. and Mrs. Al- joe Culbert and Freddie and Mar­ garet, of Lucan, were guests on Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Fred Kerr. Stephen Teachers’ Association The June meeting of the Stephen Teachers’ Association was held in Crediton, on Thursday, June 6th. The speaker of the evening was Dr. C. C. Misener, of Crediton, taking as his subject “Conditions of Schools in Stephen Township as Found by the Medical Officer of Health.” After the meeting the teachers re­ paired to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Sidney J. Brown where a social hour was spent. Decoration Day Sunday, June 23rd, is Decoration Day at the Crediton cemetery and friends and citizens will meet to pay tribute to their comrades who have passed beyond. This year, with Europe in a deadly conflict and thousands dying every day, the ser­ vice will take on a new signficance, and we will remember even more kindly those who have passed be­ yond the pale in the days gone by. A large attendance is looked for, and if the weather is fine, this will certainly materialize. Shower for Bride-Elect A pleasant evening was spent at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Finkbeiner when a kitchen shower was held in honor of Miss Irene) Fahrner, bride-elect, only daughter) of Mr, and Mrs. Charles Fahrner. I Mrs. John Hirtzel assisted in the( evening’s entertainment. When Irene entered the room she was ush­ ered to a chair, which was prettily decorated. The gifts were nicely arranged on the table over which hu-ng a sprinkling can, symbolic of the occasion. Miss Fahrner, after opening her gifts thanked each one for so kindly remembering her. The evening was spent in games after which lunch was served. Red Cross Donation The local unit of the Red Cross wishes to gratefully .acknowledge the receipt of 22 blankets, 1 quilt and $23.75 in response to its latest appeal. The following are those whose donations are greatly apprec­ iated: Crediton Women’s Institute, Women’s Association of the United Church, Adult Bible Class and Mr. Ed. Chambers’ class of the United Church Sunday School, Mrs. Chas. Zwicker, Shipka Community $21.75, Shipka Home and School Club $2, Mrs. Ed. Morlock, Ladies’ Aid of the Evangelical Church and the fol­ lowing classes from the Evangelical Sunday School: Dorcas Band, Star Class, C. I. C. Class, True Blues, Living Links, Broadcasters and Friendly Bible Class. Children’s Day at the Evangelical Church Children’s day was observed last Sunday at the Evangelical church. A choir of 38 junior hoys and girls furnished two excellent anthems at both morning and evening services under the direction of Mr. and Airs. Freeman Morlock. The regular pro­ gram was presented in the evening. Beginners, primaries, juniors, and young people and adult, classes each presented an interesting number, either song, reading, exercise, piano trio, playlet, vocal duet and ladies’ octette. Many of these were more than ordinary. Splendid floral dec­ orating added to the pleasure of the evening. All considered the, program was one of the best ever given at our Children’s Day. Visit County Home Last Wednesday evening the Young People’s League of the Ev­ angelical church visited the County Home at Clinton and presented a program for the inmates. Gordon Ratz president of the League acted as chairman for the evening. Miss Ella Morlock read the Scripture. M. S. The Ladies’ Aid and W. M. S. of the Evangelical church held their monthly meeting in the basement of he church last Thursday evening with Mrs. H. E. Roppel’s group in charge. The devotional part of the program was conducted by the Jr, League with Joyce England occupy­ ing the chair. This consisted of a chorus, reading by Betty Gaiser and George Tieman; solo by Shirley Smith, dialogue by Shirley Guen­ ther and Marion Smith; piano solo by Nancy Tieman. Mrs. Roppel gave the chapter in the Study Book. The president Mrs. G. Wildfong presid­ ed for the business. It was decided to donate a pair of woollen blankets to the Red Cross. The parsonage committee reported considerable work done on the parsonage. 35 sick visits, 15 bouquets and one dainty were reported. The next meeting will be in charge of Mrs. R. H. Taylor’s group.
