Mrs. Stapleton’s Grade 1/2 class at
Maitland River Elementary School
knows a thing or two about
Christmas cookies and they’ve got
some unique ideas about how to
make their favourite baked snack.
“I like gingerbread cookies, me
and my brother had cutters and we
cut the dough and put them in the
oven. There’s nothing in the dough
to make them except dough and
ginger. Then you cut and cook
them.”
Devin J.
“I like gingerbread men, but I
don’t really know how to make
them. I think all you do is put ginger
and sugar in the oven and then the
oven makes them for you.”
CJ B.
“I like chocolate chips all through
the year. When you want to make
them, you just put them in the oven.
They are made of three different
kinds of chocolate. Chocolate chips,
chocolate powder and chocolate
dough.”
Amelia F.
“I like gingerbread men, but to
make it you have to make a mess.
You need ginger and ploppy
oatmeal. You probably need a
container for all the ginger and you
put it in the stove. You probably take
it out of the oven after two minutes
and make shapes with those silver
things. Then you wait for them to
cool down and eat them”
Zayd F.
“I like gingerbread houses. First
you take milk and bread and ginger
and mix up with more milk. Then
you put it in the oven until it’s
cooked. Then you ice it with an icing
tube and build buildings out of it.”
Mara G.
“Gingerbread are my favourite
holiday cookies. I think you pour
some sugar into cookie mix and put
it in the oven to make it. Then you
can eat them, all of them.”
Faith H.
“My mom makes candy cane
cookies and they are my favourite.
She makes plain cookies and puts
broken candy cane pieces in them.
She cooks it before she puts the
candy cane in them. Then we get to
eat them all.”
Charlotte M.
“I like gingerbread men and
houses and to make them you get the
dough and roll it into shapes before
you cook it. The dough is made out
of flour, ginger, eggs, milk and
spices.”
Travis B.
“My favourite kind of cookies is
gingerbread. You use some ginger to
make them and also some dough and
the things that shape it into
gingerbread men and walls for
gingerbread houses then you put
them in the oven. Then you let it
cool down and share it with
everyone.”
Carson B.
“I like gingerbread cookies and I
don’t know how to make it. I think
you would put some sugar in the mix
and mix it into dough. Then you put
them in the oven for 10 minutes.
Then you take them out of the oven
and cut them.”
Dylan D.
“Gingerbread cookies are my
favourite. You get some dough, and
it has spice in it, then you bake it and
put some sugar and stuff on top.
Then you eat it, that’s the best part.
Taten F.
“I like squares, they are my
favourite. They have marshmallows
and peanut butter in them. I would
probably mix it together and make it
into a ball, then cut off the sides and
put it in the oven. Then you put them
out in the cold sometimes. I get to
eat them every time.”

Going gonzo for ginger
Many of Mrs. Stapleton’s Grade 1/2 students at Maitland River Elementary School like a little
spice with their cookies, listing gingerbread as their favourite. That said, beyond the ginger,
their recipes differ wildly from one other. (Denny Scott photo)
