A big part of Nixon’s Christmas traditions also resides with the Belgrave Kinsmen, a group he has been with for the past 24 years. He said that, for nearly a quarter century, the Kinsmen have followed the same tradition: finding donations for the local food bank and holding a turkey bingo fundraiser. This year, however, the Kinsmen weren’t able to hold the turkey bingo. The group also holds a Christmas breakfast in November and celebrates the holidays together. In addition to her father’s willingness to rise early with her on Christmas morning, Nicole’s uncle, Wayne Lowe, was also somewhat of a Christmas icon in the Brussels area. Wayne served the community as its resident Santa Claus for years before he passed away. Nicole said she spent many holidays at her uncle’s Santa’s Workshop, where she and John were often employed as elves. When Wayne passed away, he had a large collection of Christmas decorations, Nicole says, many of which were passed down to her and John. Now, however, Nicole and Mike split their time between their two families, bringing Beckett along for the ride. Christmas is often a three- or four- day process, Nicole says, where the family loads the car up and sleeps at the homes of different family members, making the rounds and bringing Christmas cheer along the way.
