Christmas traditions are rich and
plentiful with Nicole Noble,
president of the Brussels
Agricultural Society and Brussels
Legion member, and her family.
The holidays at the Noble home in
Brussels have changed recently,
however, as Nicole and her husband
Mike welcomed Beckett to the
family just over a year ago.
Life at the Noble house has
changed in the last year and all
you’d have to do is look to the
family’s tree to know it.
Mike and Nicole have made a
tradition of gifting Christmas tree
ornaments to one another for the
eight years they have been together
(they have been married for six).
The first ornament she can
remember giving to Mike, Nicole
says, was baseball-related. They are
both huge fans of the game. Mike, in
addition to being a member of the
Huron East Fire Department’s
Brussels station, is also a member of
the Belmore Stingers of the Huron
County Fastball League. (Beckett is
named for Los Angeles Dodgers
pitcher Josh Beckett after Nicole
shot down Mike’s first choice of
Jeter, after New York Yankees
shortstop Derek Jeter.)
When the couple was married, the
ornaments denoted their union,
while Christmas ornaments given
last year commemorated the birth of
their son and his first Christmas.
In fact, because Beckett was born
just over a month before last
Christmas, Nicole says, some of his
earliest outings were Christmas-
related.
Last year, when the couple went to
Brussels United Church on
Christmas Eve, as they do every year
(they alternate between Brussels
United and Mike’s home church of
Gorrie United), they dressed Beckett
as an elf, much to the delight of
many members of the congregation.
This year, she says, will be great,
as Beckett is now over one year old
and will be able to appreciate and
interact this holiday season, much
more than last year’s Christmas,
when he was just a few weeks old.
Soon, she says, Beckett will be old
enough to anticipate presents at
Christmas and perhaps, in her
mother’s image, be an early riser on
Christmas morning.
Nicole remembers getting up very
early on Christmas morning with her
brother John (Lowe) and father
Murray. Often it was a reasonable
wake-up time of 5 a.m., Nicole says,
but there were years where she and
her father were up at 4 a.m. and
simply drove around the Village of
Brussels to see who was awake.
When asked if there were ever
Nobles to make new traditions
What do we have here?
Nicole, seen here with loved pet Oliver, and Mike Noble, holding their son Beckett, have
always celebrated Christmas by buying one another Christmas tree ornaments. Beckett is
seen here grabbing an ornament with his name on it that caught his eye. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
