Mrs. Van Wyk’s Grade 1 class at
Huron Christian School in Clinton
had lots of ideas for what gifts they
would ask for at Christmas, but
when asked what they would give
others, they put their thinking caps
on and told The Citizen what they
would give their parents for
Christmas.
“I would get my mom an iPad
because that’s all she wants. I would
buy it at the phone store. My dad
would take me and I would probably
borrow money from him to pay for
it. Sometimes my dad gives me
money to buy gifts and I have a lot of
it.”
Caitlin VanGent
“My mom and dad have
everything they want so I would get
them a card. I would make them a
card because I know how to spell
Merry Christmas and I know to write
‘From Kennedy’. Then I would draw
a picture.”
Kennedy Boersma
“I would give my parents candy
because it’s yummy. I would get it at
the grocery store. My parents would
give me a ride and I would
buy it with money in my piggy bank.
I would hide it so they didn’t know.
Emily Buffinga
“I would get flowers for them
because it’s the time of year to give
stuff to them. I would get them from
a store or buy them and plant them
for next year. I would get them from
a flower shop. I would work at a
farm to get money for them because
I live at a farm.”
Aaron Feddes
“I would give them an ice cream
maker so they can make ice cream. I
really like ice cream. I would save
up for it so I could buy it on the
computer for them.”
William Hoonard
“I would give them love. I would
do what they say, do what they ask
me to do. I would hug them a lot.”
Asher Meinen
“I would give them adult stuff, like
clothes, warm clothes. I would give
them warm clothes from the grocery
store. Mommy would give me
money and take me there.”
Elise Poortinga
“I would give love to my parents
for Christmas. I would make them
breakfast in bed and I would shovel
the laneway and make the beds and
do all my chores.”
Ryan Poortinga
“I would get them a new horse
because one of our horses died. I
would go to a horse farm and buy
them a new horse because they like
that.
Karin Pot
“I would give them a really big
chocolate, like as big as a ruler. My
mom and dad would have to take me
right to the chocolate factory
because you can only get it there.”
Joshua Rooseboom
“I would give them a carpet
because, in our doorway, it gets wet.Our kitchen gets wet because it’sright beside there. We get wet
when we walk into the kitchen. I
would go to Sears and get them a
carpet.”
Cade Schouten
“I would give my mom jewelery
from the jewelery store. I would give
my dad a remote control helicopter
from the gas station because I sawthem there.”Eli VanBreda
“I’d give my father a Japanese
type of saw from Lee Valley. We
already got it for him. We went
Christmas shopping and he didn’t

Turning the tables
While students in Mrs. Van Wyk’s class at Huron Christian School in Clinton definitely knew
what they wanted for Christmas, they had to think for a minute to decide what they would give
their parents if they could give them whatever they wanted. (Denny Scott photo)
