One of the area’s youngest service
club members likes to keep things
pretty traditional around the
holidays.
Seth Nichol of Brussels, president
of the Brussels Leo Club, a youth
club sponsored by the Brussels
Lions Club, says that around
Christmas it’s all about spending
time with family and getting back to
the reason for the season.
The way to get the young man in
the Christmas spirit, he says, is
through his stomach. He says that
once December rolls around and
many of the products you can find
come with Christmas flavours, it’s
hard not to look forward to Dec. 25.
“For me, it’s candy cane,” Nichol
said in an interview with The
Citizen.
Specifically, he says, he likes a
little candy cane flavouring to his
hot chocolate this time of year.
On the other hand, what is sure to
not get him into the Christmas spirit
is shopping. He says he doesn’t
mind doing it for his family and
close friends, but it’s far from his
favourite Christmas activity.
Several years ago, The Citizen
interviewed Paul Nichol, Seth’s
father regarding his favourite
Christmas tradition, which was the
family all collecting in the family’s
barn every Christmas Eve for a
reading of the Christmas story from
the Bible.
Seth says his father’s, and by
extension, his family’s tradition is
still very much a part of the holidays
every year for him.
For Seth and his father Paul,
however, they have taken that
tradition to the next level on a
number of occasions, provided that
the weather outside isn’t too
frightful.
After the annual Christmas
reading, Seth says, there have been
years that he and his father have
slept in the family’s cabin in
anticipation of Christmas morning.
The cabin is a popular place over
the course of the year, Seth says, as
he and his friends have been known
to spend a night or two there over the
summer. But in the winter, the cabin
is often reserved for Christmasactivity with his father.
Around the holidays, Seth says,
there is no shortage of people, as
members of his extended family
from both sides make the trip to theirhome just north of Brussels for the
holidays.
Christmas Day, however, tends to

Taking stock at Christmas
Seth Nichol, president of the Brussels Leo Club, which was formed earlier this year, likes to
spend time with his family around the holidays, a family with a rich set of holiday traditions that
harken back to the reason for the season. Nichol is seen here holding a hand-knit stocking that
was made by a friend of his mother Kathy. The stocking was made specially for him when he
was born and it has remained in the family ever since.(Shawn Loughlin photo)
