Ironmen win three over weekend, earn two shutouts
Sports
Jaden Shrier recorded back-to-
back shutouts, turning aside 79 of 82
shots he faced, as the Wingham
Ironmen claimed three victories in
Western Junior C Hockey League
play on the weekend.
The first game, played Friday at
the North Huron Wescast
Community Complex, saw the
Ironmen double up the Mitchell
Hawks, 6-3 with Aaron Armstrong
getting a goal and three assists.
The Ironmen took a 3-1 lead in the
first period and held a 5-2 advantage
after 40 minutes of play, The
Ironmen outshot Mitchell 41-30, and
were 1-9 on the power play.
Defenceman Keaton Willis scored
his first career Junior C goal and
added an assist. Justin Jacklin also
had a goal and an assist. Scoring
single markers were Ryan McNeil,
Blake Pickering and Jeremy Ross.
Alex Kuntz picked up a pair of
assists, with single helpers going to
Jamie Huber, Travis Donaldson and
Brett Brophy. Shrier earned the
decision in the Wingham net.
Willis said the team played hard,
“playing a good 60 minutes.”
“We come out with the win when
we need it,” he said.
He said getting his first career goal
was awesome. “It was so good to do
it with the guys on the ice,” he said.
“It brought a tear to my eye.”
At 5’ 8” tall, Willis is a small
defenceman playing against the
bigger forwards.
“You just have to be a bit smarter,”
he said. “You just can't go and take
them right away, you have to take
them at the right time.”
Coach Louie Livingston said it
was a good win for the Ironmen.
“When you win when someone is
fairly close to you in the standings,
it's always nice, and we kept the
goals against down,” he said. “Three
goals, that’s important, you can’t let
a lot of goals in like we’ve been
doing, and I was happy we got some
secondary scoring,”
Mitchell was able to score two
goals with the man advantage.
According to Livingston, having
Aaron Armstrong back in the line up
is just like Christmas.
“He’s gifted. He makes a
difference to our team, the way they
play, his enthusiasm, everything
about him. He makes everybody else
better,” the coach said.
The Wingham Ironmen are in
second place despite being one of
the smaller teams in the league.
“I think we’re small, but we're
fast,” he said. “That's a credit to the
guys, They're hard workers and
they're good skaters and that's what
we're all about.”
He said players have to be good
skaters when they’re playing on an
ice surface like they have at the
North Huron Wescast Community
Complex.
Shrier turned aside 30 shots
Saturday evening at the Complex as
the Ironmen blanked the Hanover
Barons 7-0. The Ironmen held a
1-0 lead after the first period
and were ahead 3-0 going into the
third period.
Alex Kuntz had two goals and an
assist to lead the offence. Jamie
Huber had a goal and two assists.
Matt McCracken and Brett Brophy
each had a goal and an assist. Single
markers were tallied by Greg Scott,
with his first goal, and Jacklin.
Picking up one assist each were
Armstrong, Connor Johnson, Jordie
Schneider and Ross.
Wingham outshot the Barons 37-
30 and the Ironmen were 1-1 on the
power play.
Coach Livingston said it was
another good win for the Ironmen. “I
like the zero, I like the shutout,” he
said.
Shrier said a good team effort
enabled him to record his second
shutout of the season. “All the boys
Over the past few years, the use of candles in the home has greatly increased — and
so has the number of fires caused by candle misuse. The Ontario fire service offers
the following tips for the safe use of candles.

don't forget to snuff out your candles before leaving the room or going to bed.
Remember to keep all matches and lighters out of the sight and reach of children.

After losing a few matches, the Wingham Ironmen put any doubt of their ability to rest with
three wins, two of which were shutouts, over the weekend. With Captain Aaron Armstrong

notch wins over Mitchell, Hanover and Kincardine. Goaltender Jaden Shrier turned away 79
of 82 attempts on net over the three matches. (Jim Brown photo)
