Auburn offers young families richness of community
I have heard about a group of
people who meet in Auburn. This
group has no name. They have no
membership list. They have no
clubhouse but they come together
twice a day, five days a week. I have
always wanted to have the
opportunity to be with them during
one of their daily informal
gatherings. I know where and when
they meet so this past week I showed
up and joined them in their daily
conversation.
Perhaps I should tell you a little
more about who these people areand why they come together. Theyare the parents and children who
meet every morning and afternoon to
wait for the school bus. As I
approached the place where they
congregate I found a group of mostly
young mothers wearing their winter
coats and hats, bouncing from one
foot to the other trying to stay warm.
The cold caused their shoulders to
be hunched up high and their hands
stayed mostly in their pockets as
they smiled and laughed with one
another. The children are off to one
side playing together and loving
every minute of it. They run back
and forth in the snow as their
mothers huddle in a group and chat
about Christmas and the family
gatherings that are coming up. You
can easily tell they all revel in the
familiarity of being with their
neighbours.
Auburn is a place where young
families come to live. Today I
thought I would ask these mothersand children what it was about thisvillage that they liked so much.
Young Cole Ferguson quickly spoke
up and said, “I like Auburn because
I can play outside now.” His mother
said the town where they had lived
before was too busy for her to let her
kids play outside. Auburn is a safe
and quiet place for them. The safety
aspect seems to be a popular answer
among the parents. Young Xander
Stewart said he liked the fact that
there was no traffic in Auburn. Even
Shelby, who is a teenager, agreed, “I
like the quiet here,” she said.
People who live in villages like
Auburn tend to like the small
community feel. It was Laura
Beacom who first spoke to me about
how much she enjoyed meeting with
the other moms at the bus stop
everyday.
“I am glad that I not only live here,
but I get work right here in town as
well,” she said as she watched her
son Owen make a snow angel in theground. Stephanie Andrews said she liked
the small town feel of Auburn. “You
know everyone here,” she says. “I
know that if for some reason I can’t
get to the bus stop all I have to do is
contact one of the other mothers and
they will make sure my kids get off
safely.”
So Auburn may not have a
plethora of stores and restaurants
like the city, but it has the richness of
community. It where you know yourneighbour and where your childrencan play safely outside. As one
mother shared with me, “You know
people have your back here”.
May the spirit of Christmas
touch all earth’s creatures with its
magic and warmth. Let us share
with others our most treasured
gifts of peace, love and goodwill.

School hosts Indian art
This week at St. Anne’s Catholic
Secondary School the Me to We
club held an Indian Culture Night
where over 300 guests were treated
to performances by Indian classical
and Bollywood dancers, a Punjabi
folk dance troupe and an Indian jazz
fusion band while eating a delicious
Indian meal. The evening was a
huge success and helped the India
mission team earn over $15,000
towards their trip.
Band Bajha Brass travelled to St.
Anne’s this week for a performance
for the concert band, Specialist High
Skills Major arts students and the
jazz band. After the performance the
jazz band participated in a workshop
with the members of the band. The
Home and Home Coffee House was
also last Wednesday and Friday. On
Wednesday, the students from St.
Mike’s participated in our coffee
house and on Friday the students
from St. Anne’s travelled to St.
Mike’s to participate in their coffee
house. Both events featured students
showing off their musical talents.
St. Anne’s students had the option
to participate in Advent
reconciliation on Thursday. A video
was shown throughout the school
highlighting the importance of
reconciliation during the Advent
season. Students were then
encouraged to participate in the
sacrament of reconciliation. The
Advent project came to an end this
week, with the baby clothes going to
Room 2 Grow and the winter wear
to the community of Kashechewan.
Thank you to everyone who brought
in something this advent season.
The annual semi-formal took
place this week on Friday. Everyone
had a great time at the St. Anne’s
Yule Ball.
