Last week, members of the contest committee visited houses throughout the village and determined which families’ efforts would be recognized this year. First place was the Ditner family at 324 Drummond Street. The family won a $50 gift certificate from Part II Bistro and plaque, provided by Davara Studios for their home which represented the “Christmas card” look according to the committee. The Souches, 708 Queen Street, took second place for having that “Griswald” look inspired by National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, according to the committee. The household received a $30 gift certificate from the Blyth Inn and a plaque. Third place was a tie between the Reids at 288 Gypsy Lane for their creative tree look and the Richmonds at 308 Wellington Street for their red and white colour look. The two winners received $20 gift certificates from the Queens Bakery and Corner Café respectively, as well as a plaque. Honourable mentions included Jim Henry at 180 Westmoreland Street, Thelma Johnston at 198 Westmoreland Street, the McDougalls and Cooks at 674 Queen Street, the Wheelers at 285 Hamilton Street, the Poels at 592 Queen Street and the Sparlings at 262 Dinsley Street. The Avon Maitland District School Board (AMDSB), the Ontario Physical Education Association (Ophea), the Huron County Health Unit and the Perth District Health Unit hosted a regional conference for teachers. This conference focused on physical activity and its importance in schools. “This was a great opportunity for our teachers to learn, participate and explore topics relating to physical activity in their schools,” says Laura Dekroon, Public Health Promoter with the Huron County Health Unit. The conference targeted teachers in both the elementary and secondary schools who are interested and passionate about physical activity. Ophea provides quality programs, services and training to schools and communities to enable children and youth to lead healthy active lives.
