Fire Department of North Huron
Chief David Sparling reported to
North Huron Township Council
during its Dec. 2 meeting carbon
monoxide (CO) detectors are now
required by law in many homes.
As part of the Hawkins-Gignac
act, named for an Ontario Provincial
Police Officer and her family who
died due to CO poisoning, the
presence of detectors of the deadlygas are going to be required in
homes that have gas appliances, be
they propane or natural, oil furnaces
or any wood-burning fire places as
well as any home with an attached
carport or garage.
Sparling explained, in a later
interview with The Citizen, the
devices would likely be required on
every active level of a home, but he
said the exact implementation of the
law had yet to be described to him. It
will fall under the Fire Preventionand Protection Act, he said, similar
to the legal requirement for smoke
alarms to be present on every level
of a house.
While the fire department recently
completed a sweep of North Huron,
inspecting and replacing smoke
alarms and batteries, Sparling said
they weren’t sure how they would
tackle this new law but it would be a
discussion for the new year.
Sparling also stated the Fire
Department of North Huron wouldbe inspecting homes in Morris-
Turnberry and replacing smoke
detectors. While there he hoped to
discuss adding inspection of CO
detectors as well.
If the inspections were anything
like those carried out in North
Huron, they would be done so under
the banner of amnesty, meaning
people wouldn’t be charged for not
having the proper equipment.
The move is a good one, according
to Sparling.“The fire department thinks it’s a
great thing,” he said. “Two-hundred
and fifty people have died from
carbon monoxide poisoning in
Ontario in the last 10 years. It’s
colourless and odourless so, without
an alarm, you won’t know it’s in
your home.”
