A nice boost

Concert brings smiles to Duff’s
The spirit is in the air. You can get
vibrations just by being near
children and those who celebrate the
coming of Christmas. And it is a
grand feeling to absorb.
Christmas parties, dinners,
gatherings and music are keeping
folks busy as the importance of this
season flows into most of us and
everyone tries to show their best
behaviour, well at least part time.
The Huron County Christmas
Bureau run by volunteers and social
services is in full swing. Gifts were
purchased with the true meaning of
Christmas, given anonymously in
churches and gatherings last week
and gathered in a central location to
be shared, for our area, that’s
Wingham United Church. With this
combined county effort, the staff
know that a little Christmas is
available to their clients, volunteers
see the joy of giving as they
organize the gifts for distribution
and the givers of the gifts have a
nice dose of Christmas joy.
Everyone receives joy with the
Christmas Bureau effort.
Music is a big of the season and
area choirs all have their favourite
ways and means of enjoying
themselves. The church choirs of
Brussels gathered at Duff’s United
Church in Walton on Sunday
evening to put music in the air. To
hear how each church celebrates the
season with their choice of music is
fun. The voices of the different
choirs gave new ones, busy ones, peppy ones and the good old
traditional ones, everyone in
attendance found at least one that
made them smile.
The United Church of Canada’s
Moderator Gary Patterson was in
London on Sunday, taking part in
worship at Metropolitan United:
Jeanette Boynton’s church. As the
head honcho of our church, he
travels across the country from his
home in Vancouver, offering
spiritual reassurance and very good
advice. Using words of the season,
the news and the changing world, it
was very clear why he was elected at
the last General Council meeting to
be spiritual leader of our United
Church. The huge, old, beautiful
sanctuary filled with music from
voices, grand piano, hand bells and
organ was a nice treat as well.
Jeanette sends her greetings, all is
well in her world.
If you need some baking for
Christmas visitors, 10 a.m. at the
United Church will give some very
good choices. It’s all over by noon, come for coffee, a chat and some
treats.
By now, Betty G.W.

Entertainment during evening
Christmas Meat Draws,
Wings & Chili
By Jo-Ann McDonald
The week was quiet around the
Brussels Legion Branch. The Cadets
met on Tuesday evening and the
Thursday night dart league played.
The Friday night supper of roast
pork was enjoyed by nearly 40 and
this week is Oktoberfest and
farmers’ sausage. The supper crew
of Deb Cann, Mary Bradshaw and
Greta Zehr did a great job in Jo-
Ann’s absence.
The Branch was the venue for the
Dauphin Feed and Supply and
Dauphin Country Store Christmas
party. They gathered for a social
time before they enjoyed a roast
beef and chicken dinner. Helping
with the meal were Comrades Deb
Cann, Judy Lee, Jo-Ann McDonald
and Linda Bird.
There were four Comrades
participating in doubles and singles
darts held in Lucknow on Saturday.
Comrades Ron and Dan
Byersbergen and Eric and Cam Ross
qualified to advance to district play
and Ron and Eric advanced also in
single play.
This week is the Christmas meat
draws, wings and chili. Everyone is
invited to attend. The draws begin at
4:30 p.m. on Saturday and will run
until later in the evening. Musical
entertainment and maybe a visit from
Santa will occur during the evening.
The early bird program went very
well with almost 70 per cent of the
members paying their dues early.
We encourage the remaining
members to drop in as soon as
possible.
