Midget Lightning snag silver finish in PittsburghThe Saugeen Maitland Midget AALightning travelled to Pittsburgh
over the past weekend to participate
in the American Thanksgiving
Classic. Combined with a little
Black Friday Christmas shopping,
the Lightning managed to play some
great hockey and came away withthe silver medal.
The Bolts’ first game was against
the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite with
the Lightning coming away with a 2-
0 shutout over the hometown
Penguins.
Tori Terpstra opened the scoringwith assists awarded to Neve VanPelt
and Lexi Smith. Cassidy Colhoun
then scored with helpers from Sarah
Biesenthal and Mel Nolan. Morgan
Baker stopped all Pittsburgh
attempts on net for the shutout.
The Lightning took on theMilwaukee Junior Admirals in their
second game of the round robin with
Rebecca Ropp earning the 1-0
shutout. The Bolts badly outshot the
Admirals, but Ashlee Lawrence
managed the only goal on a tipped
shot from the stick of defenceman
Jamie Simpson. Kelsey Dixon added
the second assist.
The Lightning found their scoring
touch in their third game, downing
the New Jersey Colonials by a score
of 7-0. Simpson, Colhoun and
Terpstra each had two goals, while
Nolan added a single. Assists were
earned by Nikki Zabel (3), Nolan
(3), Lawrence (4), Avery Reeves and
Dawn Pletsch. Baker earned
her second shutout of the
tournament.
The three wins put the Lightning
in first place after the round robin
and earned them a spot in the semi-
finals. The Bolts faced the
Milwaukee Junior Admirals for the
second time in the tournament, again
only managing a single goal on the
hot Admiral goaltender. However,
Lightning goaltender Ropp was
equally good, shutting out the
Admirals for the second time.
Lawrence scored the only goal of the
game, scoring one on a break-away
on a feed from Simpson.
The tournament final pitted theBolts against the Mississauga
Chiefs, also undefeated to this point
in the weekend. The Lightning badly
outshot the Chiefs, but ran into
another hot goaltender and could
not put one into the Chief’s net. The
defence core of Kailyn Soers, Ciara
Lark, Jordyn Sholdice, Maddie
Duncan, Simpson and Zabel were
solid all weekend, instrumental in
keeping the puck out of
the Lightning net and defensive
zone.
The game remained scoreless
through regulation and five minutes
of four-on-four overtime.
The only goal of the game was
scored by the Chiefs in the shootout,
giving them the tournament
championship.
Next weekend the Lightning play
a double-header at home against
Windsor on Saturday and play in
London on Sunday.

Keep your eye on the ball
Unfortunately, the Stray Cats, shown here on the defensive, weren’t able to overcome the Blyth
Rebels during a broomball tournament held at the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community
Centre on the weekend. The Rebels would go on to win the Ladies ‘A’ Championship after this
match while Moonshiners from Harriston would take the ‘B’ side. The Palmerston Rookies took
the Men’s ‘A’ Championship while the Windsor Sharks took the ‘B’ side. Organizer Jodi Houston
explained that the tournament welcomed 18 teams, 12 on the men’s side and six on the
women’s side. She said that, with 15 to 20 members per team, the tournament brought
between 300 and 360 people to the Brussels area. (Denny Scott photo)
Injured captain hurts Ironmen
The Wingham Ironmen offence
continues to struggle without the
services of leading scorer and
captain Aaron Armstrong. The
Ironmen travelled to Walkerton on
Friday and were handed a 7-2
setback by the first-place Hawks.
Wingham opened the scoring in
the game, 24 seconds into the first
period when Ryan McNeil tallied a
goal, assisted by Keaton Willis.
However, goals by Drew Davidson,
with a pair, and Brennan Pearce gave
the Hawks a 3-1 advantage after 20
minutes of play.
Goals by Tyler Snyder and Joel
Bowman made the score 5-1 for
Walkerton after two periods of play.
Josh Perdue made it 6-1 at 8:44 of
the third period. Brett Brophy scored
at 9:29 to make it 6-2. Willis and
Alex Kuntz assisted. Davidson
tallied his third goal of the game at
11:51 to conclude the scoring in the
game.
Jaden Shrier took the defeat in the
Wingham net. Walkerton outshot the
Ironmen 41-24 and the Ironmen
were 0-5 on the power play.
The Ironmen play three games this
weekend, two at home and one on
the road. The weekend begins on
Friday when they host the Mitchell
Hawks at 7:40 p.m. at the North
Huron Wescast Community
Complex. The venue is the same on
Saturday as the Ironmen host the
Hanover Barons beginning at 7:40
p.m. The Ironmen travel to
Kincardine on Sunday for a 2:30
p.m. contest against the Bulldogs at
the Davidson Centre.
