Total receipts for Brussels Livestock for the week ending Nov. 28 were 2,427 cattle, 577 lambs and goats. On Tuesday fed steers and heifers traded on a strong active market at prices $1 higher. Choice steers and heifers sold $127 to $130 with sales to $139.75. Second cut sold $124 to $127. Cows sold $1 higher on an active trade. On Thursday veal sold on a very strong market at prices $5 higher across the board. Light lambs sold steady to higher while heavy lambs sold barely steady. Sheep and goats sold on an active market with goats trading at slightly higher prices. On Friday all classes of cattle traded on an active market at steady prices. Chris Smith of Brussels, consigned 14 steers averaging 1,611 lbs. selling for an average of $137.38. Two limousin steers averaged 1,633 lbs. and sold to Horizon Meat Packers for $139.75. Wayne B. Martin of Drayton, consigned six steers averaging 1,572 lbs. selling for an average of $133.79. One limousin steer weighed 1,510 lbs. and sold to Horizon Meat Packers for $138. William G. DeJong of Brucefield, consigned 16 steers averaging 1,373 lbs. selling for an average of $128.37. One limousin steer weighed 1,075 lbs. and sold for $134.50. Frank Foran of Lucknow, consigned four steers averaging 1,384 lbs. selling for an average of $126.06. One red steer weighed 1,325 lbs. and sold for $130. Ervine Willert of Hensall, consigned three steers that averaged 1,370 lbs. selling for an average of $127.38. One bwf steer weighed 1,475 lbs. and sold to St. Helen’s Meat Packers for $128.50. Larry Reinhart Sr. of Mildmay, consigned six steers averaging 1,437 lbs. selling for an average of $127.33. Four limousin steers averaged 1,423 lbs. and sold for $127.50. Art Hinz & Sons Ltd., consigned six heifers averaging 1,407 lbs. selling for an average of $128.22. One red heifer weighed 1,475 lbs. and sold to Horizon Meat Packers for $132. K/C McAlpine Farms of Alisa Craig, consigned three heifers that averaged 1,322 lbs. selling for an average of $128.85. One limousin heifer weighed 1,345 lbs. and sold to Norwich Packers for $130.75. David Bowles of Brussels, consigned five heifers that averaged 1,314 lbs. selling for an average of $126.86. One black heifer weighed 1,330 lbs. and for $128.50. Elam W. Martin of Harriston, consigned eight heifers that averaged 1,139 lbs. selling for an average of $125.37. One charolais heifer weighed 1,220 lbs. and sold for $127.75. Jason Caesar of Dungannon, consigned one heifer that weighed 1,415 lbs. and sold for $127.25. There were 361 cows on offer. Export types sold $66 to $76.50 with sales to $79; beef, $7150 to $79 with sales to $84; D1 and D2, $54 to $63; D3, $45 to $52; D4, $37 to $45. Ann Bennett of Seaforth, consigned two cows that averaged 1,568 lbs. and sold for an average of $80.03. One limousin cow weighed 1,625 lbs. and sold for a top of $81. Charles Osterndorff of Elmwood, consigned one charolais cow that weighed 1,475 lbs. and sold for $79.50. Baird Bros. of Wingham, consigned two cows that averaged 1,188 lbs. and sold for an average of $77.21. One charolais cow weighed 1,315 lbs. and sold for $79. There were four bulls selling $70 to $80. Mbhreo Cattle Co. of Clifford, consigned one blonde bull that weighed 1,875 lbs. and sold for $82. Michael Schmidt of Mildmay, consigned one red bull that weighed 2,030 lbs. and sold for $70. There were 110 head of veal on offer. Beef sold $170 to $200 with sales to $205.50; good holsteins, $145 to $160 with sales to $168; medium holsteins, $130 to $140; heavy holsteins, $140 to $150. John Martin of Lucknow, consigned two veal averaging 763 lbs. selling for an average of $195.48. One simmental heifer weighed 760 lbs. and sold for $201. Lawrence Brubacher of Harriston, consigned five veal averaging 787 lbs. selling for an average of $189.12. One black heifer weighed 800 lbs. and sold for $200.50. Lamar Frey of Listowel, consigned nine veal averaging 746 lbs. selling for an average of $178.61. Two limousin steers averaged 740 lbs. and sold for $205.50. Lambs, 50 - 64 lbs. sold $198 to $290; 65 - 79 lbs., $174 to $210; 80 - 94 lbs., $155 to $181; 95 - 109 lbs., $169 to $187; 110 lbs. and over, $160 to $174. Sheep sold $55 to $100. Goats: kids sold $60 to $130 per head; nannies, $70 to $145 per head; billies, $150 to $350 per head. Top quality stocker steers under 400 lbs. sold $170 to $220; 400 - 499 lbs., $155 to $196; 500 - 599 lbs., $139 to $183.25; 600 - 699 lbs., $137 to $170; 700 - 799 lbs., $119.50 to $167.50; 800 - 899 lbs., $120 to $155.50; 900 - 1,000 lbs., $129 to $157.75. Top quality stocker heifers, 300 - 399 lbs., sold $154 to $196; 400 - 499 lbs., $144.50 to $183; 500 - 599 lbs., $131 to $183.50; 600 - 699 lbs., $120 to $156; 700 - 799 lbs., $133 to $149; 800 - 899 lbs., $125 to $142; 900 lbs. and over, $128.50 to $139.50. On the afternoon of Sunday, Nov. 17, a large crowd gathered at the Seaforth Agriplex to celebrate the accomplishments of the 2013 4-H members in Huron County. Awards for showmanship, club completions, plowing, dedication and life skills were just a few of the skills that members were recognized for. Flags and balloons celebrating the club decorated the hall in honour of the 100th anniversary of 4-H Canada. Cupcakes, cookies, juice and coffee added to the occasion. A silent auction and 50/50 draw were held, as well as names of 4-H members were drawn for door prizes. Firstly, members were recognized for how many clubs they have been a part of. Reba Jefferson was honoured with her 48-club completion, while Melissa Higgins and Jolande Oudshoorn were honoured with their 30-club completion. Jillian Martin received her 24-club completion and Adam Baan, Linda Franken, Jeanette Schramm, Ryan Baan, Taylor Kinsman and Connor Van Osch were honoured for their 18-club completion. Johanna Blake, Loretta Higgins, Shawn Ryan, Emily Van Osch, Nicole Vingerhoeds and Tyler Westerbrook were all honoured for their 12-club completion and over 20 were honoured for completing work with six 4-H clubs. Volunteers were also honoured, with Brian McGavin leading the way, being honoured for 30 years of volunteering with 4-H. Kim Higgins was recognized for her 25 years volunteering with clubs, while Jacquie Bishop, Rosemary Foran, Brent Black and Lorri Ann Moore were all recognized for giving 10 years to the organization. Beef Awards: Brussels Agri- Services Award as champion beef showperson at the Seaforth Fair and the Lawrence Beane Financial Award as the high senior beef showperson at the Seaforth Fair were won by Tyler MacPherson; Home Town Custom Builders Award, top intermediate showperson at the Seaforth Fair, Melissa MacIntyre; Maple Ridge Beef Farm Award, champion junior beef showperson, Seaforth Fair, Michaela Rodger; W.J. (Bill) Sproul Memorial Award, Top Beef Group of 3, Seaforth Fair, Lucknow Beef Club, Tyler Murray, Brad MacIntyre and Melissa MacIntyre; Huron County Beef Producers Association Award, Top Novice Beef Member, Cole McEwan. Stan Jackson Memorial Awards: Huron County 4-H Beef Member with the highest total score in the County, Melissa MacIntyre.
