Ironmen split games, Captain Armstrong sidelined
The Wingham Ironmen split a pair
of Western Junior C Hockey League
contests on the weekend. But the
team lost more than a game.
In Friday evening’s 7-3 decision
over the Hanover Barons at the
North Huron Wescast Community
Complex, the Ironmen lost the
services of their leading scorer and
captain Aaron Armstrong. He was
illegally checked by Hanover player
when he sustained a lower body
injury early in the third period. A
penalty was being called on the play,
but the Ironmen scored on the
delayed penalty to nullify the
penalty.
Without the services of Armstrong
on Saturday evening in Mount
Forest, the Ironmen fell to the
Patriots by score of 6-4.
The Ironmen held a 2-0 lead after
the first period, Friday evening and
held a 4-1 advantage going into the
third period. Wingham outscored
Hanover in the final period. The
Barons outshot the Ironmen 32-31
and the Ironmen were 2-9 on the
power play.
Blake Pickering, Jamie Huber and
Ryan McNeil each had two goals
and an assist to lead the Wingham
offence. Travis Donaldson had a
goal and an assist. Armstrong picked
up a pair of assists, with single
helpers going to Brett Brophy, Justin
Jacklin, Keaton Willis, Mason
Keating and Carter Stewart.
Scoring for the Barons were Justin
D. Graham, Drew Quinlan and
Tyson Soers. Jaden Shrier
earned the decision in the Wingham
goal.
Coach Louie Livingston said it
was a good win for the Ironmen. “I
just hope the outcome of the game
doesn’t go bad for us because I don’t
like to see one of our players get
hurt, especially when it’s Aaron
Armstrong,” he said.
The coach said it was a lower body
injury and noted that there was
nothing broken.
“I thought we played well,” the
coach said. “Everything was going
well to that point. We were in control
of the game and we had played
well.”
Livingston noted that they were
trying to keep their goals-against
down, which they were doing.
“Something like that changes how
the game goes,” he said. “I don’t like
to see that. You see what they were
doing, especially when it’s
Armstrong.”
He indicated the team tried to
adjust the best they could without
the services of Armstrong. “Losing a
player like Aaron it’s hard to adjust
to that,” he said.
Pickering said he had a good
game. “I had some nice passes from
Stewart and Willis,” he said, “We
played a good all-around game.”
“It’s good when we come out
flying,” he said.
He indicated the game was chippy
at the end. “We’re part of the
family, we have to protect
everybody, and that’s what we do,”
he said.
On Saturday evening in Mount
Forest, the teams were tied at two
after the first period, with the
Patriots taking a 4-3 lead after two
periods and outscored the Ironmen
2-1 in the third period to reach the
final 6-4 score.
Donaldson had a goal and two
assists to lead the Ironmen offence.
Scoring single goals for the Ironmen
were Jeremy Ross, Jordie Schneider
and Alex Kuntz. Brophy collected a
pair of assists, while single helpers
were recorded by Pickering and
Huber.
Trevor Hughson had three goals
for Mount Forest and Doug Ardis
netted a pair. Keegan Woodman
started in goal for the Ironmen, with
Shrier taking over after the first three
goals.
With the Atom Regional Silver
Stick being played this week, the
Ironmen are on the road for a single
game this weekend.
