Cottrills lead curling teams Cooking in the cold Butch Logan was on frying duty on Saturday night as the Belgrave Arena Board hosted a wing night at the Belgrave Community Centre. Dozens turned out to the event, despite the fact that the annual Santa Claus Parade was happening in Brussels that same night. (Vicky Bremner photo) Katie Cottrill of Belgrave competed in a World Curling Tour Grand Slam event in Saskatoon from Nov. 15 - 18. Her team, Team Flaxey from Listowel, competed against 32 women’s teams from around the world. They defeated Jennifer Jones of Manitoba in their final game of the triple knockout to qualify for the playoffs before losing in the semi- final, in an extra end, to Team Jaggi from Switzerland to finish in fourth place. Katie’s husband Shawn was competing in an Ontario CurlingTour event in Chatham the sameweekend where his team, TeamAprile, won the consolation round. At the same time brother Matthew Cottrill was curling with his junior team, Team Bradey, at an Ontario Junior Curling tour event in Kitchener where they were runners- up in the event final. Matthew and Team Bradey competed at the Ontario Curling Association Junior Zone playdowns in Leamington on Nov. 23 and 24 finishing on top and qualifying for the regional playdowns in Harriston on Nov. 30 and Dec. 1. The team finished in the top two in Harriston and qualified to play in the Provincial Junior Competition in Gananoque from Jan. 2 - 6. Congratulations from the community to the Cottrill family on their success this year. On Sunday, Dec. 1 the Campbell relatives held their annual Christmas get-together at the BelgraveCommunity Centre. This year Bruce and LindaCampbell were the hosts. Because they were unable to attend, their family looked after it. Chris Campbell said the blessing and then everyone enjoyed a bountiful buffet. The afternoon was spent visiting and reminiscing while the children did crafts. Santa arrived just on time to hand out gifts and treats to all the good boys and girls. A delightful afternoon was brought to a close with everyone saying their goodbyes, giving hugs and wishes for safe trip home and a happy holiday. 273 Hamilton St., Blyth • 519-523-4590 www.blytheastsidedance.com Blyth East Side Dance Learn the Tango By Linda Campbell Call 357-2188 PEOPLE AROUNDBELGRAVE NEWS FROM BELGRAVE Smoking in places where kids play could get a little tougher in Huron County if new legislation passes. The Government of Ontario has proposed changes that would make it harder for youth to get tobacco products and further limit smoking in public areas in Ontario. The Huron County Health Unit supports the move, says Public Health Nurse Julie Verch. “Ontario has a goal to have the lowest smoking rate in the country and this is a big step to help us get there” says Verch. “This will reduce Huron residents’, especially youth’s, exposure to the harmful effects of tobacco.” The Youth Smoking Prevention Act, if passed, would: • Prohibit smoking on playgrounds, sport fields, and restaurant and bar patios. • Double fines for those who sell tobacco to youth, making Ontario’s penalties the highest in Canada. • Ban the sale of flavoured tobacco products targetted at kids to make smoking less appealing to youth. • Strengthen enforcement to allow for testing of tobacco in waterpipes in indoor public places. • Prohibit tobacco sales on post- secondary education campuses and specified provincial government properties. The proposed changes were introduced in the house on Nov. 18. The public has until Jan. 2, 2014 to comment on the proposed changes. Health unit supports act
