Brussels parade appeals to all
Stay in the lines
As everyone knows, the annual Brussels Santa Claus Parade extends far beyond the parade
to include visits with Santa back at the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre, free
skating, food and even a colouring contest. Seen here, doing her best to take home colouring
gold is Amelia Foreman. (Vicky Bremner photo)
The Blyth Witches Walk is
preparing for the worst but hoping
for the best when it comes to
weather.
Organizer Bev Blair visited North
Huron Township Council on Nov. 18
to discuss future plans for the annual
event.
“Since 2002, we have built on it
and extended it,” she said. “In the
last couple of years, we’ve run into
terrible weather.”
The outdoor event features
volunteers creating a spooky
experience at the Greenway Trail in
Blyth, however some of the more
delicate mechanisms are left
inside when threatening weather
rolls in, as it has for the past two
years.
Blair explained that the group is
beginning to plan for next year’s
event and that members would like,
for the month of October, to use a
storage shed behind the Blyth and
District Community Centre on the
off-chance that there is inclement
weather again.
“We would like council to
consider allowing us to use the
storage area behind the arena to have
time to set up, take down and
use equipment that wouldn’t have to
face rain problems,” she
explained.
Having use of the shed, which is
owned by the municipality, would
allow the group to not only work
with some of its equipment that gets
sidelined if there is a call for
rain, but also give them a
back-up location if the weather
looks extremely unpleasant.
Director of Recreation and
Facilities Pat Newson said she was
in favour of the plan once it was
verified that the group was only
seeking to use the shed during
October.
Public Works Director Kelly
Church also signed off on it.
Council approved the request on a
test basis, saying it would see how it
worked for the 2014 event.
THE EDITOR,
The Brussels “Once Upon A
Christmas” Christmas parade was a
huge success thanks to the co-
operative weather, the organizers
Sherri Oliver, Deb Seili, Abi Corbett
and me (Chris Ten Pas), the
firefighters who supervised the
parade and bagged the candy and all
the participants.
While visiting with Santa and
Mrs. Claus to get their candy,
children also got their faces painted,
had free skating and ate hot dogs.
Parents visited with Kabrina Bishop,
the Ambassador of the Fair and
bought tickets for the turkey draw.
The winners were Brenda
Nicholls and the Boneschansker
family.
Colouring contest winners were:
ages 1-4, Vanessa Albrecht and Ray
Wheeler; 5-8, Emily Mann and Nick
Albrecht; 9-12, Sarah Hastings and
Joel Nesbit. Winners for floats: most
original float, Turning Heads and
Making Waves; best service club,
Agricultural Society; best
commercial float, Happy Dog Inn;
best overall, Townsend Tire.
Congratulations everyone and
have a blessed Christmas!
Chris Ten Pas.
