Continued from page 9
be investigated neither disputed the
fact a long term plan was necessary.
Brennain Lloyd, the
representative from Northwatch,
explained this project was a
benchmark and her group was
interested in it for that reason. The
group is also based in North Bay
and shares the waterways connected
to Lake Huron which, at its closest
point, is 1.2 kilometres from the
shafts that will provide access and
air for the DGR.
Lloyd explained there are many
discrepancies included in the
application for the DGR, citing an
ever-changing footprint and size of
the storage facility, as well as the
fact that using natural barriers
without any man-made barriers is a
practice that has never been tested
outside of computer modeling.
“The reality is there is no
international experience,” she
explained. “There is no experience
with limestone and no experience
without created barriers. If the rock
barrier in the site is disturbed or
compromised, the seals will be all
that stands between the radioactive
material and the water and world.”
She said the uncertainties are
abundant and the project could have
problems beyond those the low and
intermediate-level waste could
cause.
“There is a different process for
(highly radioactive) fuel waste,” she
explained. “The industry is seeking
acceptance for fuel waste and
approval of a low level waste or
independent waste proposal like this
could help that process along.”
Central Huron and Saugeen
Shores are two locations that have
been considering high-level
radioactive material DGRs, though
neither has confirmed a future
possibility of it.
Lloyd also stated, in response to
Bailey’s concerns about
transportation, that the shipping of
nuclear waste is kept secret.
“A community has no right to
know... when a nuclear waste
shipment is going to go through
your community,” she said. “It puts
first responders in a very difficult
and precarious situation.”
Both Councillors Bailey and Ray
Hallahan thanked all the participants
for their time. Reeve Neil Vincent
had the last word, however, and said
he definitely understood some of the
concerns being discussed.
“I know that the 200,000 cubic
metre plan has doubled in the past
four years,” he said. “It’s not the
same project that it started out as at
all.
“Maybe we were too trusting that
the panel would do the job all on its
own without asking questions,” he
said, speaking of the panel
reviewing the application for the
DGR.

It was a long day last Wednesday, but workers were able to
brave the cold weather and erect this new mural on the side
of Brussels Foodland celebrating the Queen’s Hotel on the
site where the hotel formerly stood. The mural was the
brainchild of Huron East Economic Development
Officer Jan Hawley and it took nearly a year to pull it all together. It was the Huron
Heritage Fund, the Brussels Community Development Trust, the Municipality of Huron East and a
private donation from Brussels’ Paul Nichol that was able to make the project happen. In the image
on the left, Bill Graham of Precision Print in Goderich is laying the mural’s first panel. On the right,
Graham is directing a worker in finishing the sign on Thursday. (Shawn Loughlin, Denny Scott photos)
