Skips and Stones – By Bruce Skinn Brussels’ Wheeler makes 2,000th career save Brianne Wheeler, Brussels native and a senior at Colby College in Waterville, Maine, recently reached a milestone in her college hockey career. Earlier this month, Wheeler surpassed the 2,000-save mark. The psychology major is in her fourth season as the team’s starting goaltender and has become one of the team’s leaders off the ice and one of the team’s captains on the ice. “The whole idea of positive and negative reinforcement – if you are telling yourself that was a bad goal you just let in, you’re more likely to let in another bad goal,” Wheeler was quoted as saying in The Morning Sentinel. “You’ve just got to stay positive. At the end of the day, you’ve got to realize why you’re playing, and it’s because you love the game.” While the Mules have left much to be desired on the ice, (the Mules have a 23-47-2 record with Wheeler between the pipes) Wheeler has continued to shine for the team. Wheeler and the Mules began the 2013/2014 season on Nov. 15 with a 2-1 loss against Middlebury, but will continue playing throughout February. The team’s next game is Dec. 1 against UMass-Boston. The Wingham Ironmen had an unsuccessful road trip last Friday evening in the Western Junior C Hockey League. Playing the Kincardine Bulldogs at the Davidson Centre in Kincardine, the Ironmen were handed a 7-4 setback, as the Bulldogs limited league scoring leader Aaron Armstrong to a single goal. The Bulldogs held a 2-1 advantage after the first period and were in front 5-4 going into the third period. Kincardine tallied two unanswered goals in the third period. Ryan McNeil opened the scoring for the Ironmen at 3:06 of the first period. Assisting on the goal were Jamie Huber and Jordie Schneider. However, Kincardine goals by Shawn Moore and Cody Britton just under two minutes apart gave the Bulldogs the lead. Tanner Simpson put the Bulldogs two goals up, 51 seconds into the second period. Travis Donaldson scored at 5:12 to put the Ironmen down by one. Brett Brophy and McNeil assisted. Armstrong tied the score at 8:58 with Carter Stewart and Huber earning assists. Goals by Brett Catto and Simpson, 10 second apart made the score 5-3 for the Bulldogs. Brophy tallied an unassisted marker at 16:42 of the middle period to make the score 5-4, but the Ironmen were unable to get any closer. Third period goals by Ethan Skinner and Lucas Johnston concluded the scoring. Kincardine outshot Wingham 41-30 and the Ironmen were 1-3 on the power play. The Ironmen have two games this weekend. On Friday, they play the Hanover Barons at the North Huron Wescast Community Complex, beginning at 7:40 p.m. The Ironmen travel to Mount Forest on Saturday for an 8 p.m. contest against the Patriots.
