REACH budget concerns council Truck ends up in field, charges laid north of Blyth Huron County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers along with firefighters from the Fire Department of North Huron and Huron County paramedics responded to a three-vehicle collision Tuesday, Nov. 12. Police say shortly before 5 p.m. a 62-year-old driver from North Huron was south on London Road in his Honda Accord. He slowed down to turn on to Nature Centre Road. A Pontiac Montana minivan driven by a 16-year-old female from North Huron was following the Accord. The mini-van slid into the rear of the Accord causing it to enter into the northbound lane of traffic. A northbound transport truck and trailer carrying a load of salt then collided with the Honda Accord. The transport continued northbound for another 300 metres where the truck and trailer left the roadway and entered the west ditch. The trailer rolled, however the load of salt did not spill, police said. Upon speaking with the driver of the transport truck and trailer officers determined he had been drinking alcohol and was displaying signs of impairment. He was arrested for impaired driving and transported to the Huron OPP detachment for breath tests. The driver provided two samples of his breath to the Breath Technician and both tests were above the legal limit. As a result, the 43-year-old driver of the transport truck, from Central Huron, has been charged with Impaired Driving and Drive Motor Vehicle Over 80 Milligrams of Alcohol. He has a court date scheduled for the Ontario Court of Justice in Goderich on Dec. 23. He received an automatic 90-day driver’s licence suspension. The Honda Accord driver was transported to Wingham and District Hospital with minor injuries. The driver and a passenger in the minivan were uninjured. HEAD-ON COLLISION A head-on collision on Kippen Road resulted in one driver going to hospital and another to the Exeter OPP Detachment for breath tests. Just after 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 11 Huron County OPP officers and Huron County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded to a two vehicle collision on Kippen Road. Investigators determined an Oldsmobile Intrigue was travelling southbound on Kippen Road when it crossed the centre line into the path of a northbound Grand Am. The driver of the Grand Am, a 27-year- old female from Seaforth was transported to hospital and was released with minor injuries soon after. Officers spoke with the driver of the Oldsmobile Intrigue and determined she had been drinking alcohol. She was also displaying several signs of impairment. She was arrested at the scene for impaired driving and transported to the Exeter OPP Detachment for breath tests. She provided two samples of her breath; both were over the legal limit. The 66-year-old driver of the Oldsmobile, from Huron East, has been charged with Impaired Driving, Drive Motor Vehicle Over 80 Milligrams of Alcohol and Careless Driving. She has a court appearance scheduled for the Ontario Court of Justice in Goderich on Dec. 23. Councillor Alex Westerhout, who sits on REACH’s board of directors, says there is a general consensus among board members that change is necessary. He said council and the board should meet to chart a course for the future. “We’d like to have a frank discussion with council on where we’re going and how we’re going to get there,” said Westerhout. Westerhout said the REACH board is also concerned with the direction in which REACH is going as well as the vitality of the building. Upon the recommendation of Deputy Mayor Dave Jewitt, council agreed to further discuss REACH at its upcoming strategic planning session. During a later question period open to the public, ratepayer Carol Dutot, who has expressed concerns about REACH’s budget many times in the past few years, said the Centre’s reports seem skewed to cast every situation in the best possible light whereas event results are under reported. Calling some of the figures “unrealistic,” Dutot said REACH is so far showing a $258,000 loss for the year. “Who is going to pay for this other than the taxpayers?” she asked. Westerhout said he, too, would like to see a detailed breakdown on the Return on Investment (ROI) for Horseapalooza. Councillor Alison Lobb said she, too, would like to see more information. 7-Day Weather ForecastElliott Nixon Insurance Brokers Inc.Monday Tuesday WednesdaySundaySaturdayFridayThursday Brought to you by Elliott Nixon Insurance Brokers Inc. ~ 519-523-4481 • enib@himginsurance.com 2°-2°0°5°3° 0°2° Acton / Goderich / Hanover / Listowel / Owen Sound / Sarnia / St Marys / Woodstock 519.291.4554 360 W onAct / Goderich / Hano enue North, Lisve Alacal360 W er vHano / el wotLis /en Sound Ow 4.1929.15 el, Onwotenue North, Lis en Sound /arnia S / arys t MS / oodsW 4554 ocktoods Flipped As a result of a three-vehicle collision Nov. 12, members of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), members of the Fire Department of North Huron and Huron County Emergency Medical Services personnel were busy.
